If you haven’t seen the will.i.am video prepared for Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, it’s highly worth watching. https://youtu.be/2fZHou18Cdk?is=MCVb_NwglpORgD8 This is a superb and emotionally powerful evocation of what a multicultural and harmonious America can be. It is inspiring.

Lake Ontario, 1688 Even a short trip from Michigan to Canada refreshes the US visitor’s confidence that an inclusive multicultural democracy is not only possible, but that it is being happily experienced in North America already. That happy democratic experience is being lived in Canada — and most emphatically not in the United States. Crossing the international border between Michigan and Ontario underlines that difference.

Ernst Fraenkel’s book The Dual State: A Contribution to the Theory of Dictatorshipoffers instructive and ominous reading today. Written during the rise of Hitler’s National-Socialist state by a German Jewish lawyer, it serves as a piece of “ethnographic study of the transformation of the authoritarian state” by a covert participant-observer. Fraenkel publishedThe Dual Statein 1941 after he left Germany and joined the faculty at the University of Chicago.

In his influential article "A definition of physicalism" (1993) Philip Pettit attempts to formulate a consistent and coherent account of physicalism as an ontology of the world. I believe that we can define a possibly true, substantive doctrine which holds, roughly, that the empirical world 'contains just what a true complete physics would say it contains'. (213) The resulting view is offered as an attempt to identify the "furniture of the empirical world".

A mile into the woods of the Wendell State Forest, the ground was covered in snow, and winding trails wrapped around iced-over streams and ponds. There was little sign of human activity. But, with skis beneath her, Ginny Graves of Pelham darted down a small hill and past a frozen brook. It’s a place for the adventurous, and Graves is certainly that. Normally, Graves has to use a wheelchair to get around, but with All Out Adventures, she is strapped to a small cart, itself above a pair of skis.
