Almanac AFL Grand Final – Fremantle v Brisbane: The Grand Final and season reviews
Grand Final Fremantle v Brisbane 2:30pm, Saturday 26th September 2026 MCG By Dan Lonergan What a Grand Final that was especially at the end when the reigning champs, Brisbane looked dead and buried with 4 minutes to go after Patrick Voss kicked a goal to take the margin to 17 points and seemingly their first ever flag. The Prancing Pony then did what could be described as a victory lap around the MCG and all of a sudden the bells tolled to indicate Wharfie Time.
AFL Grand Final Preview: The role of unsung players who are vital to winning premierships
By Dan Lonergan In my 52 years of following, watching and for 37 years being in the lucky position of broadcasting and covering sport, I have always been drawn to the lesser profile and lesser talented sports people. That might have a bit to do with myself in that I have always felt I am pretty limited in most things I do.
Finals week 3 – Brisbane Lions v Adelaide Crows: Talent and playing your own way doesn’t always work
Second Semi Final Brisbane v Adelaide 7:35pm, Saturday 12th September 2026 Gabba By Dan Lonergan When the Brisbane Lions are on, invested and engaged there isn’t a side in the AFL that can beat them and in some cases get anywhere near them. An example of that was Saturday night.
Qualifying Final – Fremantle v Hawthorn: Fremantle has more to lose this week than last week
Qualifying Final Fremantle v Hawthorn 8:10pm, Thursday 3rd September 2026 Optus Stadium, Perth By Dan Lonergan I wrote in an Almanac article earlier in the season that Fremantle were fast replacing West Coast as the big brother of AFL Footy in Perth.
Wildcard Final – Western Bulldogs v Collingwood: A wild night for the first wildcard as the Dogs were let out
Wildcard Final Western Bulldogs v Collingwood 7:40pm, Friday 28th August 2026 MCG By Dan Lonergan When the AFL announced they were going to bring in the wildcard round for teams seventh to tenth on the ladder to battle for a spot in the finals a week later, it would be fair to say, skepticism reigned supreme.
Round 24 – Sydney Swans v North Melbourne: The Bloods Culture might be bloodied, but it will survive
Round 24 Sydney Swans v North Melbourne 3:20pm, Sunday 23rd August 2026 SCG By Dan Lonergan Last week was a difficult week for the Sydney Swans in more ways than one. A club lauded for many years for as close to a perfect culture as any football club could have, thanks to the Paul Roos coaching and Brett Kirk playing era of the early part of this century, was under the spotlight as we know for all the wrong reasons.
Round 23 – Western Bulldogs v Carlton: When a draw is a win for the Blues
Round 23 Western Bulldogs v Carlton 3:15pm, Sunday 16th August 2026 Marvel Stadium By Dan Lonergan Draws in footy tend to provide flat emotions when the siren sounds as you don’t know how to feel. It’s obviously not a win or loss, although Craig McRae, in Collingwood’s draw against Hawthorn (for the second time in 2026) on Saturday, was demonstrative at the end like the Pies had won and maybe the draw was more beneficial to his side considering how much younger they were than the Hawks.
Round 22 – Melbourne v Fremantle: It’s all about the close ones as the Demons become Kings
Round 22 Melbourne v Fremantle 1:15pm, Saturday 8th August 2026 MCG By Dan Lonergan In footy in Victoria at all levels as all fans know, a win is worth 4 points if you pump your opposition or just get over the line in a thriller by less than a goal. You could argue that the bigger the victory, the more points for a win could be awarded, but for as long as I have been fanatical about the game 4 points for a win, no matter the margin, has been the prize in this state and 2 points for a draw.
Round 21 – Port Adelaide v GWS Giants: The Giants are still in Wildcard contention as Adam Kingsley prevails over his premiership teammate
Round 21 Port Adelaide v GWS Giants 6:35pm, Saturday 1st August 2026 Adelaide Oval By Dan Lonergan From 2001 until 2004, Port Adelaide was one of the best home and away teams in the AFL. In fact from 2002 to 2004, they were clearly the yardstick in the regular season as they call it in basketball and American Sports. That language continues to creep into the AFL and that is highlighted by the introduction this season of the Wildcard Round, which is a staple in the NFL playoffs.
Round 20 – Hawthorn v Essendon: That line in the sand has become a beach between the Hawks and the Bombers
Round 20 Hawthorn v Essendon 4:15pm, Saturday 25th July 2026 MCG By Dan Lonergan In 2004, when Essendon was approaching the end of it’s long stint as a good side and relevant in the AFL on the field they played a struggling Hawthorn in a match that was described as a line in the sand. The theme or idea came from Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton in the urinal at half time in the Hawthorn rooms.
Round 18 – Collingwood v North Melbourne: The drivers of Friday night footy, North Melbourne, go back to the future
Round 18 Collingwood v North Melbourne 7:40pm, Friday 10th Jully 2026 Marvel Stadium By Dan Lonergan At the time of my entrance into the world which is years ago in 1969, yes! I am old with a body that is sore and starting to fall apart, North Melbourne was a regular straggler in the VFL since they played in the 1950 Grand Final, when a very powerful Essendon side beat them easily. There were a couple of other finals appearances in the 50s, but the 1960s was a disaster.
Round 17 – Sydney v Western Bulldogs: Footy brings people together no matter what the result
Round 17 Sydney v Western Bulldogs 7:40pm, Friday 3rd July 2026 SCG By Dan Lonergan Football particularly is always fierce at senior level and although the chance for AFL players from both teams to catch up after the game for, as is often described in this country (which I still don’t fully understand) a quiet beer, does not exist. Local players still get the chance and always will.
Round 16 – Port Adelaide v Adelaide: Showdown is box office in AFL on-field rivalries
Round 16 Port Adelaide v Adelaide 7:35pm, Saturday 27th June 2026 Adelaide Oval By Dan Lonergan Walking through the streets of Richmond on Saturday night on my way to a birthday party, there were Collingwood and Richmond fans everywhere having left watching their teams play each other. When I was growing up in the 1970s and early 1980s, the Pies and the Tigers were two of the biggest rivals in the VFL being neighbouring working class suburbs of Melbourne.
Round 15 – Fremantle v Geelong: Is it ‘wharfie time’?
Round 15 Fremantle v Geelong 8:10pm, Thursday 18th June 2026 Optus Stadium By Dan Lonergan When Fremantle first joined the AFL in 1995, the football world was fascinated by the Dockers’ playing style under their first ever coach, Gerard Neesham. He adopted a keepings off game plan loosely based on water polo, a sport in which his family especially brother, David, is a legend and rated as one of this country’s best ever players.
Round 14 – North Melbourne v West Coast: Kangaroos and Eagles powers of the 1990s and how the mighty have fallen
Round 14 North Melbourne v West Coast 4:15pm, Saturday 13th June 2026 Optus Oval, Perth By Dan Lonergan In what was a magnificent decade of football in the 1990s with star players everywhere including the great full forwards who kicked 100 goals a season for fun like Jason Dunstall, Tony Lockett and Gary Ablett Snr, North Melbourne and West Coast were constants in the finals in that decade.
Round 13: Gold Coast v Brisbane: Big brother Brisbane continues to own little brother Gold Coast
Round 13 Gold Coast Suns v Brisbane Lions 5:15pm, Saturday 6th June 2026 People First Stadium By Dan Lonergan After three big losses in a row the footy world, which consists of more than 2000 people around Australia that have media accreditation to cover the sport, many more than in the parliamentary media gallery in Canberra, were willing to write off the reigning premiers, Brisbane.
Round 12 – Sydney v Richmond: Nothing tigerish about the Tigers against the Swans
Round 12 Sydney Swans v Richmond 1:15pm, Saturday 30th May 2026 Sydney Cricket Ground By Dan Lonergan After three flags in four years, which could have been four in a row, if Mason Cox didn’t play the best game he has ever played in the 2018 Preliminary Final, Richmond now finds itself in a fully fledged rebuild and second from the bottom, with just two wins.
Round 11 – Port Adelaide v Carlton: Tell them the Blues are coming!
Round 11 (Sir Doug Nicholls Round) Port Adelaide v Carlton 7.35pm, Saturday 23rd May 2026 Adelaide Oval By Dan Lonergan My impression of a large group of Carlton supporters is that they are all duck or no dinner. When they are struggling, as they did in the first nine rounds, it is no dinner.
The Ashes - Third Test, Adelaide Day 5: England’s test winning drought in Australia extends to 18 as their Ashes campaign turns to dust….
ENGLAND’S TEST WINNING DROUGHT IN AUSTRALIA EXTENDS TO 18 AS THEIR ASHES CAMPAIGN TURNS TO DUST…. BY Dan Lonergan. Usman Khawaja turned 39 on the second day of this Adelaide test of which he made a significant contribution in both innings of 82 and 40 after being given a reprieve when Steve Smith pulled out on the morning of the match with illness.
Federal Court Finds Tort Claims Preempted by CERCLA Consent Decree
On May 18, 2022, in York et al. v. Northrop Grumman Corp. Guidance and Electronics Co. Inc. et al., No. 21-cv-03251 (W.D. Mo.), a federal district court dismissed state-law tort claims for alleged groundwater contamination, finding that they were preempted by an existing Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) consent decree. The court rejected the plaintiffs’ argument that two CERCLA “savings clauses” allow their claims to proceed.
Judge Rules in Criminal Sanctions Case Involving Cryptocurrency
In one of the first criminal cases brought under US sanctions laws involving cryptocurrency transactions, a federal magistrate judge approved the Department of Justice’s criminal complaint. In the opinion unsealed on May 13, 2022, US Magistrate Judge Zia M. Faruqi ruled that the Department of Justice demonstrated probable cause in accusing an unnamed defendant of transmitting more than $10 million in bitcoin to a “comprehensively sanctioned” country.
