Gear: How the Avalanche could afford to keep Kadri, then MacKinnon, et al.
Second part of a two-part series examining the Colorado Avalanche’s roster and salary cap construction. Having too many good players is the NHL’s ultimate first-world problem. No team will garner much sympathy for having too many players that deserve to be paid handsomely, as that usually translates to success on the ice and at the box office. However, for NHL front offices living in the NHL’s flat cap world, mo’ money just equals mo’ problems.

Burnside's Burns: February 2022
And so we begin the back half of this topsy turvy NHL season. What should have been a month of celebrating the first best-on-best tournament in Beijing at the 2022 Olympics since 2014 in Sochi will now be a month of postponed games being un-postponed.Teams, at least in the Western Conference — where pretty much everyone but Arizona, Seattle and Chicago is in the hunt — figure out if they’re going to be a buyer, seller or a nervous pedestrian come the trade deadline on March 21.

Gear: Why the Panthers could keep Lord Stanley in a Sunshine State of Mind
For two straight years, Lord Stanley has taken up residence in the state of Florida, enjoying warm tropical breezes and income tax-free living. The Tampa Bay Lightning defended their Stanley Cup last year in convincing fashion and with the midway point of the season now upon us, they are looking to become the first team to three-peat since the New York Islanders won four straight Cups in the early 1980s.
Burnside: Controversy or not, Ville Husso changing the equation in St. Louis
Goalie controversy is so cliché. Let’s call it a goalie conundrum. Because really, until the games take on a life or death hue like the day before the first game of the playoffs, then there really is no controversy. And when one goaltender, in this case relatively unknown Ville Husso, is playing lights out and the team, in this case the St. Louis Blues, continues to collect points and solidly hold down a playoff spot, well, controversy seems unnecessarily dramatic.

Burnside: Kent Hughes' background as an agent brings new perspective to Canadiens
If General Motors hired a new president who had never been a mechanic, we’re still guessing that there wouldn’t be a great hue and cry when that hiring was announced. Or if Kraft Heinz Company hired a new president, we’re guessing it would not be a news story if that man or woman had never grown a tomato or been a cheese maker. That’s because being an executive in the real world is very different from being an executive in professional sport.

The initial flurry of interest in forward Evander Kane in the days since becoming an unrestricted free agent on Sunday seems to have cooled in the last 24 hours as teams await further information. That’s after NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly sent a memo to all 32 general managers on Wednesday, which was obtained by Daily Faceoff, that indicated that Kane could be facing discipline from the league for violation of COVID-19 protocols over the holiday break.
The Daily Faceoff Show: Which Wings player will separate in race for Calder?
There are few more interesting storylines to follow this year than the race for the Calder Trophy. And so we come to the end of not just another month but the end of the lamentable year, 2021. Don’t let the door hit you on the rear end on the way out of town 2021. Good riddance. Sadly we start 2022 in much the same way we have endured most of the last two years. But if there’s a silver lining it’s perhaps in the way that, hopefully, we appreciate what we do have and the work that is done, often behind the scenes, to keep us moving forward even in the most trying of times.

McKenna and Quadrelli: Diagnosing the problem with Yaroslav Askarov
Let’s make three things clear right off the bat with this article. First, you don’t start for SKA of the KHL as a teenager if you’re a bad goaltender. You also don’t get drafted in the first round of the NHL Draft if you’re a bad goaltender, either. Lastly, this article certainly isn’t being written just because of Askarov’s poor performance at the World Juniors, either.

Most of the key players from that gold medal effort have moved on.
