Trump’s CFTC Pick Troubles Tribes With Prediction Market Plans
Tribal groups are concerned Kalshi, Robinhood and Crypto.com pose an existential economic threat to them through sports prediction markets—and on Tuesday, it became even more clear the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) isn’t coming to their rescue. CFTC chairman nominee Brian Quintenz made his pro-market stance apparent while speaking in front of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry at a Tuesday confirmation hearing.

Angel Reese Tips WNBA Strike Plans Ahead of CBA Talks
Chicago Sky star Angel Reese, the runner-up in 2024 Rookie of the Year voting, said she is hearing from fellow players that a player strike is on the table after this coming season. The WNBPA has already opted out of its current collective bargaining agreement, meaning the deal will expire this fall rather than in 2027. With several sticking points between players and the league office, a prolonged labor dispute is looming. Reese said the players are ready to take action.
Activision, EA Revive Video Game Rivalry in Virtual Skatepark
Activision confirmed Tuesday that it will release a remake of the skateboarding video games Tony Hawk 3 and Tony Hawk 4 in a single download on July 11. This will be the first year skateboarding will have console titles from two major publishers in more than a decade. Electronic Arts, an Activision competitor, said it would give gamers early access to its revived Skate series in 2025 with a full release to follow, likely near the end of the year.

CarMax’s Angel City FC Deal Part of Refined Marketing Strategy
Angel City FC and used vehicle retailer CarMax have signed a sponsorship agreement that will place CarMax in prominent public-facing positions across the NWSL club’s business. Among the specifications of the deal are that CarMax will be the presenting partner of Angel City’s season ticket program, title night event and camps series, which comprises 10 weeks of youth soccer camps for about 500 kids in the Los Angeles region.
Angel City FC Names Carmen Bona President of Business Operations, Promotes Julie Uhrman to CEO Original
NWSL club Angel City FC, the most valuable women's sports team in the U.S., has hired Carmen Bona as its president of business operations in a newly created role. The club has also promoted co-founder and president Julie Uhrman to CEO ahead of the 2025 season. Bona will take over day-to-day business responsibilities for a club recently purchased at a $250 million valuation by Willow Bay, dean of USC's journalism school, and her husband Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney.
Rams’ Australia Trip Part of Six-Nation Marketing Plan
The Los Angeles Rams have held designated NFL commercial marketing rights in Australia since 2021, when the nation became one of their six International Home Marketing Areas (IHMA). LA will be able to strengthen its footprint there as the nominal home team for a 2026 NFL international game in Melbourne against a still-to-be-determined opponent, the league announced Wednesday.
Ishbia Sports Empire Targets Minnesota Twins for Portfolio Original
Justin Ishbia, who co-owns the NBA’s Phoenix Suns with his brother Mat, is planning to lead a bid to purchase the Minnesota Twins, according to someone with knowledge the process. Ishbia’s offer could include Mat and other investors, the source said, and the multi-billionaire has spent time in Minneapolis in recent weeks scoping out the area. If he is successful in his attempt to purchase the Twins, it would give the family’s growing sports empire a foothold in Minnesota.
Bears, new-look coaching staff bottom out
(670 The Score) Note to future mutineers - once you successfully nudge your captain off the plank at the point of a cutlass, do something other than immediately run the ship onto the rocks and sink it. This isn't to argue in any way that the bumbling and overmatched Matt Eberflus deserved to keep his job as Bears head coach but is merely to point out that some fundamental flaws on this team clearly run far deeper.
Valkyries Tip Off With WNBA’s First Expansion Draft in 16 Years
The Golden State Valkyries will construct much of their first WNBA roster through Friday night’s expansion draft. Led by general manager Ohemaa Nyanin, appointed by the club in May, the franchise has been in a full sprint to identify targets who fit their vision for building a contender. It is now time to put the preparation into practice.
Colorado’s Hunter, Sanders May Buck Trend by Playing in Bowl
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders suggested Tuesday that his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and two-way star Travis Hunter could participate in a college football bowl game this year despite being projected as high first-round NFL Draft picks. The Buffaloes are technically still in College Football Playoff contention because of the expanded field, though their 37-21 loss to Kansas this past weekend made that a long shot.
Caleb Williams is all that matters
(670 The Score) We're all mentally fried after that, our circuits overloaded and burned out by the purple haze of the Bears' latest exhibition of doing juuuuuuuuust enough to lose. I'm not sure there are any significant truths that were revealed in the Bears' 30-27 overtime loss to the Vikings on Sunday at Soldier Field, at least nothing we didn't already know or suspect about this team that has now dropped five in a row. Fire this sad, overmatched head coach now or later. Either is fine.
AT&T Stadium Roof Torments Cowboys After Sunset
After building AT&T Stadium at a cost of more than $1 billion with a retractable roof, the Dallas Cowboys have used the feature just 30 times out of 126 regular season home games and never since October 2022. When they tried to open the roof for Monday night’s game against the Houston Texans, a mechanical failure caused a large piece of metal to fall hundreds of feet to the field below. The incident, which occurred several hours before kickoff, did not result in injuries or delay the game.
Bernstein: This is torture Original
(670 The Score) The dead cat bounced, but, alas, the cat remains dead. Not so for the rest of us, who continue shambling like stunned and witless zombies in this godforsaken Bears nightmare awaiting whatever awfulness is over the next rise. From the Hail Mary to that blocked field goal. Perfect bookends to bracket a collection of gothic novels replete with a menagerie of football terrors. Packers 20, Bears 19.

Another Bears flop confirms a coaching crisis Original
(670 The Score) The tortured Bears optimism that still existed last week is an embarrassing look right now after their latest disaster on the road. Matt Eberflus is well into his third season as head coach in Chicago, and his teams still have yet to win a road game on a Sunday, with this one ending up 29-9 in favor of the Arizona Cardinals, who are at least a nominal playoff contender if well less than a good team.
U.S. Sportsbooks Steer Clear of Big-Money Election Market, for Now
Six years after the 2018 Supreme Court decision that led to widespread legalization of mobile sports betting, U.S. sportsbooks dangle a variety of granular and obscure potential wagers in front of customers. Their influence reaches deep into U.S. society. But one market they are not tapping into is betting on government elections. No U.S. state currently allows the practice ahead of the 2024 vote.
Bears deserved to lose to Commanders
(670 The Score) One of the stupidest NFL games in recent memory ended in a way we won't forget for a very long time. Jayden Daniels scrambled around for a place to set his feet with his Commanders down three and zeroes on the clock. His desperation heave to the goal line was tipped into the hands of Noah Brown for the winning touchdown, and in a blink the improbable Bears escape wasn't to be.
A’ja Wilson’s Confident Commercial Swap Plan Activated After MVP
In April, Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson participated in two nearly identical commercial shoots with used vehicle retailer CarMax alongside New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu and the retired Sue Bird. The first touted Wilson as a two-time WNBA MVP, referencing her trophies in 2020 and 2022. The second touted her as a three-time winner of the award, with the company and player optimistic during their preseason shoot that she would claim the honor in the soon-to-start 2024 campaign.

WNBA Business Turns the Corner-But Its Home Stretch Is Complicated
The 2024 WNBA season, which dramatically changed the immediate and future business outlook of the league, concluded on Sunday as the New York Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx in a decisive Game 5 of the Finals to become champions for the first time in their history. While the just-finished campaign will be remembered as a watershed year that bolstered the WNBA’s long-term financial sustainability, it may also be viewed as a road to even bigger developments on the horizon.
A New Target for Sports Bettors: Doctors With Injury Info
Around the time the Baltimore Ravens completed a Thursday night win over the Cincinnati Bengals last November, Dr. Thomas J. Graham received images of injured quarterback Joe Burrow’s wrist from Cincinnati’s medical staff. Burrow, Cincy’s franchise QB, exited midway through the prime-time game with a damaged scapholunate ligament. He missed the rest of the 2023 season. That night, though, the public had no concrete details about the severity of Burrow’s setback—and sports bettors grew impatient.
Bernstein: Caleb Williams, Bears are flying high into the bye
(670 The Score) The first evidence of humanoid existence in England dates to approximately 800,000 years ago, which is also about the last time the Bears had a real quarterback. It was there Sunday that rookie Caleb Williams continued unlocking new levels of performance in a dominating 35-16 win over the Jaguars that sends the Bears into their bye week at a promising 4-2, a bit banged up but cruising back home having won three straight, now with completely legitimate designs on a playoff bid.

Valkyries See Bueckers Chance Fade as WNBA Sets Draft Slot Original
The WNBA announced Thursday that the Golden State Valkyries will receive the No. 5 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, setting an operational precedent for the expansion teams set to join the league this decade. Toronto and Portland, scheduled to enter the WNBA in 2026, can now expect to select just outside the lottery in their first draft, too.
Nike’s JuJu Watkins Extension a Product of NIL-Era Recruiting
Nike extended its contract with USC superstar JuJu Watkins on Tuesday, reaping the rewards of a relationship it cultivated long before she set foot on a college basketball court. Watkins first signed with Nike in October 2022—about a year ahead of her Trojans debut. At the time, she was a five-star recruit at Sierra Canyon School north of L.A. who had yet to become a household name. Bears are good enough to bully a bad team Original
(670 The Score) No excuses have to be made for beating up bums. In fact, it's very much a part of getting good. The Bears' 36-10 demolition of the Panthers on Sunday at Soldier Field needn't be anything more than that, tempted as we always are to define such games more broadly and portentously. It was a fun win, though, to be sure, building on previous successes to keep the Bears well-positioned to make the most of their soft schedule before games begin against foes in the NFL's best division.
NWSL’s Angel City Fined $200K, Execs Suspended in Salary Cap Flap
The NWSL announced late Thursday that it would dock Angel City FC three points in the 2024 standings, fine the club $200,000 and limit the roles of two executives after determining it circumvented salary cap rules. Club co-founder and CEO Julie Uhrman and general manager Angela Hucles Mangano are banned from “conducting duties relating to any player transactions” for the rest of the calendar year.
Caitlin Clark Caps Historic Season With WNBA Rookie of the Year Win
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark was named the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year on Thursday after receiving 66 of 67 votes for the honor. The lone non-Clark vote went to Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese. Clark, the No. 1 pick in this year’s WNBA Draft, averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game, and the Fever reached the postseason for the first time since 2016.
Bears put a floor in Original
(670 The Score) It's not exactly the highest standard, but at this point we're allowed to celebrate Bears competence. There was enough of it on display Sunday in their 24-18 win over the Rams to quiet our doomspiraling for now, shoving those stubborn fears back toward their dark and ancient caves. Complementary football can do that, and we finally saw something resembling a plan.
Robinhood Inks Third NBA Jersey Patch Deal via Klutch Sports
Dan Bernstein Tue, September 24, 2024 at 5:00 AM EDT 3 min read For the third time since last October, financial service company Robinhood has announced it will put its logo on the jersey of an NBA team. On Tuesday, it added the Miami Heat to an advertising push that also includes the Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards. Robinhood’s trio of jersey partnerships in one league is a fresh take on an advertising method that is altogether a relatively new phenomenon in the United States.
Disastrous Bears offense is careening into crisis Original
(670 The Score) If it wasn't must-win for the Bears in Indianapolis on Sunday, it was at least Must Stop Sucking on Offense. The winless Colts had surrendered 474 rushing yards in two games, the most through that span in the NFL since 1978. And they were missing DeForest Buckner, their best defensive player.

This still looks like the Bears Original
(670 The Score) Change the color of the uniforms, and it's the Bears, regardless. They can be dressed as they were like oddly well-conditioned Packers fans in winter hunting garb, and they still block like they've never seen an extra rusher. Change the offensive coordinator and there's the same lack of any identity - nothing they seem confident in doing well, anything that keeps an opponent from dictating a course of action.

NFLPA Sides With Van Noy After Medic Complaint-Drawing NFL Ire
NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell weighed in on the controversy over medical care received by Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy, who accused the Kansas City Chiefs’ medical staff of inadequately treating an eye injury he sustained during Week 1’s Ravens-Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium.
Bears will take it, but Caleb Williams has to be better Original
(670 The Score) Caleb Williams won his NFL debut Sunday, no thanks to him. The top overall pick in the NFL Draft, Williams completed only 14 of his 29 passes for 93 yards, leading an offense that produced 148 yards and zero touchdowns. He missed open receivers, fumbled a shotgun snap, took a damaging sack, had multiple throws batted down at the line and looked very much like a rookie adjusting to bigger, faster, smarter opponents.

Ion Eyes WNBA Rights Extension Even as Parent Scripps' Stock Plunges
Scripps Sports president Brian Lawlor predicted Ion will agree to a long-term broadcast rights extension with the WNBA—even if the surging league raises fees after striking a mega-deal with other networks. Ion, which is owned by Scripps, acquired rights for the WNBA in 2023 on a cut-rate, three-year pact; the league has recently seen its viewership explode, even more so after welcoming a popular 2024 draft class headlined by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.

Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister forced to play on 'disaster' pitch with Argentina
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and his Argentina teammates were forced to endure a playing surface they viewed as unacceptable and potentially dangerous during Thursday's Copa America match against Canada. Argentina's 2-0 win came at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which featured grass that was laid out days before. Usually, the venue uses artificial turf, and Argentina players believed the new grass wasn't set up properly.
