Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for the dreamboat team at Dekad Lifestyle Magazine.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Nearly every day of my life. Mine is pink and perfect. It matches my hair sometimes and my heart always.

How is social media changing news?

As with most everything related to social media, I believe it to be the very worst kind of disarchitect to real news.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Rita Skeeter, by a mile.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

There is no one more powerful than you standing between the truth and the public. It's a Sisyphean battle to get it right.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#erducatorstrong (yes, they put an "r" there!)

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I'm open to anything as a general life mantra!

What's your favorite social network?

The king tides. On ANY coast.

Who do you wish followed you?

Good lord, so many. A few of note: Mark Knopfler, Stevie Nicks, Eliot Sumner, Camile Paglia, Brett Anderson, Iggy Pop, Cyndi Lauper...

Why did you become a journalist?

Having wasted a fair amount of time in my life attempting to give my pen-gifts away for free to others, I decided I wanted them for ME.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, I was much too self-conscious then for that....

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Writing for Culture Crush was a dream come true for me as its editorial team has been on my list of heroes for several lifetimes.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Your words are your wand.

When's the best time to pitch you?

As the Beatles would say, any time at all.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

The day Ted Chase, founding editor of QRO Magazine, asked me if I'd like to review The Raconteurs.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A marriage proposal from a sociopathic narcissist who didn't even REALLY know about Radiohead when I met him.

What's your favorite drink?

Green tea!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Horseback in a forest, vertically challenged on a surfboard, or screaming like burnt banshees in front of an Australian rock god or five.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

W Magazine.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That everyone is trying to be Pitchfork.
