10 Reasons Why Mindfulness Matters
Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash How many times have you caught yourself checking email, refreshing social media, texting a friend, eating a meal, and stressing about your to-do list all at once? Trust me, I’ve been there. Prior to embracing mindfulness, I was a multitasking queen determined to hustle 24/7. After one too many all-nighters, tension headaches, and rock-bottom moments of fatigue, I decided enough was enough.
Self-Love | Harness Magazine
Dear Universe, I’d like to write about mental health. Well, to be specific, I want to write about mental illness and my experience with the for-some-reason-taboo subject of Bulimia. Don’t panic 😉 I promise I’m not going to launch into hours of complaining about how unfair life is (but if anyone else feels inclined to do that, they should go for it! I’ve had enough rants, vents and ugly crying sessions to know that it makes you feel so much better than if you just keep it all in).
Bipolar Relationships
Mental Health by Kimberly Ramos • June 10, 2020 In general, relationships take a lot of nurturing and time. Imagine doing this as someone with bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder have to navigate the emotional roller coaster of manic and depressive cycles. Then, they have to maintain relationships with family, friends, and significant others. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but there are healthy ways to deal with relationships and bipolar disorder. Here are some of those tips.
It’s My Birthday and I’ll Cry if I Want to: A Rally Against Anti-Black Racism
It’s my birthday this week. I love birthdays. I love celebrating, literally, anything. I believe that life is for living in the moment, and I’m a proponent for always finding the silver lining on even the darkest of days. However this particular year, it feels tone-deaf for me to celebrate. Especially when there are atrocities happening to people who look just like me. In case you hadn’t guessed it, hi, my name is Danai, and I am living while black and female.
A Scary Merry Christmas
One cold winter evening, I sit on my couch drinking a nice warm cup of hot chocolate. I watch the fire dance in the fireplace. I hear a thud on my roof and think it’s just a chunk of snow falling off the tree branches above my house. Again a thud, but this time it’s right above me. Confused, I go outside to see what is going on. I take two steps out my door before I notice a huge shadow on top of my house standing as still as a statue. Before it notices me, I briskly go back into my house.
Who Am I | Harness Magazine
Culture by Rene Trevillion • November 29, 2019 Growing up in the South, I learned to show hospitality to everyone. I came from a background where my great-grandmother is Native American. She was an very respectful creative woman who had a lot of talent in her creative side. She would make a place mats, runners and decorative pieces for the center of her dinning room table. Most of all, she sewed, crocheted and knitted a lot of clothes for the family — even for my grandmother.
What Comes After Why?
Culture by Anissa Ward • November 27, 2019 Does everything deserve an explanation? There are times when I know that I’m still healing from certain situations and I know that in most cases it’s because I didn’t have a chance to say my peace. It feels like an unfinished chapter to a book you read or a to be continued ending to a movie you watched, and every time you look back there’s this lingering question of why?
"If music be the food of love, play on."
The year was 2007, we were all still recovering from Britney shaving all her hair off in a desperate cry for help and digital music as we knew it was on the verge of change. iPod sales that year were at a peak, something I knew first hand, having saved months and months to purchase a 6th Generation iPod Classic. And in matte black no less, which added a little sauce to the already cool factor I was going for. 80GB of illegally downloaded musical bliss.
Fighting The System Of Harassment In Schools
Going into my profession as an educator, I knew that I was going to be an unruly, non-traditional teacher. At a very young age, being an educator was my dream, but my passion was never to teach academics; instead, I wanted to teach about the human experience through academics. Early on, it seemed as if the curriculum I created for my classroom somehow paralleled my advocacy efforts and those efforts of society.
A Month Of Gratitude
This is the time of year to show appreciation and be mindful of the things we are thankful for. During the month of November, I wrote one thing I am thankful for each day, up to the day after Thanksgiving, because the number 23 is symbolic to me, and below is the result: 11.1 I am thankful for the desert’s clear blue skies, crisp Autumn air, and bright sun – the desert is seemly magical this time of year.
What It's Like to Be a "Third Culture Kid" in the Age of Social Media
Instagram is pretty effing dope. I know that sounds arbitrary, but just think about it: you follow people, sometimes they follow you back; you can watch, emulate, fawn over, covet, inspire, and be inspired by these people who, oftentimes, you don't even know! You can find similarities with these strangers, and it's pretty powerful when you realize - damn, someone out there is just like me.
