Derek Jeter’s journey from high school phenom to New York Yankee
Long before he was The Captain, long before he was bound for Cooperstown and having his number retired, Derek Jeter was a lanky 17-year-old from Kalamazoo, Mich., who once told his fourth-grade teacher he would someday be a New York Yankee and wrote an essay in eighth grade about becoming their shortstop. Five World Series titles, 14 All-Star appearances, five Gold Gloves and 23 years later, few remember how Jeter’s professional career got started.
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES: Duke basketball downs Gonzaga to advance to Final Four
HOUSTON—Heroes can sometimes come from the unlikeliest of places. With the Blue Devils' season on the line, it was not ACC Player of the Year Jahlil Okafor, senior captain Quinn Cook or Houston native Justise Winslow who answered the call. It was the Joneses. Both of them.
Duke basketball receives warm welcome back to campus after winning fifth national title
For the past three weeks, Duke has traveled far and wide to face college basketball's most grueling tests. When the dust settled, it was the Blue Devils left standing atop the mountain. Having reached the sports pinnacle, the only thing left to do was go home. The 2015 national champions were greeted by thousands of fans for a celebration Tuesday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
President Bush, Dallas Cowboys take in Duke basketball's Elite Eight win
HOUSTON—The Blue Devils may have found their good luck charm deep in the heart of Texas. The area behind Duke's bench during its 66-52 Elite Eight win against Gonzaga Sunday was stocked deep with Texas royalty. President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara were on hand, as well as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten and head coach Jason Garrett. This, of course, was not the first time these Texas icons have watched the Blue Devils play.

Hood refuses to let nerves, sickness get the best of him
GREENSBORO, N.C.—In a bizarre scene, Rodney Hood made his way to the bench just 1:14 in the second half, prompting a stoppage of play. His Duke teammates rose from the bench and huddled around him to shroud their captain from view of the television cameras.Duke trainer Jose Fonseca sprinted an orange Gatorade cooler down the row so Hood could vomit. Less than a minute later, the Blue Devils tore down the human wall around Hood.
How the Rouhani Meter fact-checks Iran’s president from 6,000 miles away
This article was republished with permission by the Duke Reporters’ Lab. Daniel Carp is a senior researcher at Duke University. The capital of Iran’s fact-checking movement is not in Tehran, but Toronto. When Farhad Souzanchi wanted to promote government accountability in his home country of Iran and track the campaign promises of President Hassan Rouhani, his only choice was to open an office in Canada, more than 6,000 miles away.
Tyus Jones delivers again as Duke basketball beats North Carolina
CHAPEL HILL—If Tyus Jones did not already write himself into Tobacco Road lore in the Blue Devils' comeback win Feb. 18, his performance Saturday should do the trick. Jones became the latest Duke freshman to turn in a legendary performance against arch rival North Carolina, returning with 10:45 remaining in the game after sustaining a back injury in the second half and leading his team on a late charge as No. 3 Duke upended the No. 19 Tar Heels 84-77 at the Dean E. Smith Center.

Krzyzewski: Okafor 'probably embarrassed' by his free-throw shooting
Jahlil Okafor has shouldered a major offensive burden in his two games since returning from a sprained ankle he suffered in a Feb. 18 win against North Carolina—with a career-high 30 points against Virginia Tech and a 13-point, 14-rebound performance Saturday against Syracuse. The one place Okafor has not succeeded has been a thorn in his side the entire season—at the free-throw line.
Winslow helps Duke blaze past Boeheim, Syracuse for ninth straight win
Cracking a 2-3 zone defense often involves what most teams refer to as a "zone-buster"—a big wing or power forward that can take advantage of the space defenses offer them at the foul line for easy jumpers or drives to the rim. No. 4 Duke found its zone-buster Saturday night in forward Justise Winslow, but the freshman found his own way to poke holes in Syracuse's vaunted 2-3 zone.
