Friluftsliv: On going outside as a spiritual practice of homecoming
Photograph by Scott Goodwill via Unsplash Friluftsliv: On going outside as a spiritual practice of homecoming “Ut på tur, aldri sur” – “Out on a trip, never sour,” Norwegian rhyme The Nordic countries, consistently ranked among the happiest in the world, have developed a lifestyle equivalent to the plein air painting tradition: friluftsliv, Norwegian for “free-air life,” or “open-air life.” Originally coined by Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen in 1859, friluftsliv is like the...
Fly fishing as spiritual practice
In calling me to place my steps through the prairie, and along the banks, and eventually wading into the stream itself, fly fishing as a spiritual practice calls me into a more ecstatically blended union with the river-world. The Cambridge Dictionary followed suit by choosing “hallucinate” as its word of the year, referring to the uncanny phenomenon by which the large language models (LLM) that made a splash this year can sometimes appear to make stuff up, representing as factual that which has never existed.
Reading scripture through the lens of nature
Several years ago, I started walking three miles each morning with my English lab, no matter the weather. There is something good about closing the gap between oneself and the environment—getting soaked by the rain, feeling winter’s cold embrace, breathing the humid air of a midsummer morning. In Speak with the Earth and It Will Teach You, Daniel Cooperrider closes the gap between God’s two books, the book of the Bible and the book of nature.
