My Time in Guatemala from 2003 to 2014
Recently, Theresa Ashton from SaddleBrooke, had the privilege to return to visit the land and people that now own a piece of her heart. From 2003 to 2014 she was called by her church to lead medical and construction teams to serve the indigenous people in Guatemala. These most gentle and kind people were, and are, still recovering from what some call their Civil War (1960-1996) or more accurately, genocide. Poverty, poor health, and the lack of clean water severely affected the well-being of many.

Mountain Shadows is a Protein Partner
Each year, throughout the month of March, our church is the April IMPACT Bag Partner. We collect at least 500 12-oz cans of animal- and fish-based protein. By Monday, March 31, Mountain Shadows delivers the protein to IMPACT of Southern Arizona located in Catalina, Arizona. The protein is included in the grocery bags stocked with other donated items to be distributed to qualifying families throughout the month of April.

World Interfaith Harmony Week
Each year, since 2010, the United Nations has recognized the first week of February as World Interfaith Harmony Week. Pioneering work of the “A Common Word Initiative” back in 2007 formed the basis for observing World Interfaith Harmony Week. The “A Common Word Initiative” called for Muslim and Christian leaders to engage in dialog based on two fundamental tenets of both religions: Love of God and Love of the Neighbor.
Ending Hunger
Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church is designated as a Hunger Action Congregation in the Presbyterian Church (USA). We focus on what our small congregation of less than 100 active worshipers can do. To address immediate needs, we host numerous food donation drives specific to non-perishable items. We address longer-term, structural solutions through how we spend our Mission Ministry budget. Perhaps most important is our sharing of the Lord’s Supper each first Sunday of the month.
Safety, Preparedness and Health at Church
At Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church, we have a ministry team of volunteers focused on ensuring the safety of the congregation. Although many of the tasks go unnoticed by the congregation, effort has been made to keep the congregation informed and aware. In 2022, as a consequence of a shooting that damaged the walls of the church, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department presented an Active Shooter Training on Saturday afternoon in our sanctuary.

Feeding Souls Safely
The Mission Ministry Team of Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church, located just south of Catalina off Oracle Road, includes a dedicated group of volunteers involved in preparing and serving meals for unhoused and/or hungry people in southeast Tucson. Once monthly, about a dozen Mountain Shadows members and friends travel downtown to Southside Presbyterian Church off 23rd Street, in Tucson, to prep the meal on Sunday afternoon for serving the following morning.

New Poems and Reading by Local Author
Two new books, by Janet McMillian Rives, a local poet, were released this spring. “On Horsebarn Hill: Poems” (Kelsay Books) is the author’s third poetry chapbook. Gene Twaronite notes, “In these searing, yet, joyous memory poems, Rives takes the reader back on a journey to where it began.” That beginning was the upstairs apartment in a farmhouse on the edge of the University of Connecticut campus amid various barns, pastures and fields.

For more than 20 years, the local Tucson Borderlands YAV Program (TBYAV) has been providing opportunities for young adults, ages 19 to 30, to come to Tucson for a year of community service. Although the National YAV program operates approximately 24 partner sites around the world as part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Mission Agency, Tucson is the only program providing direct engagement at the southern border.
Feeding Those in Need and Changing Lives
As a Matthew 25 Church, Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church is challenging the congregation to deepen its faith and get more actively involved with the greater community. One focus of our Mission Ministry Team is to provide funding and in-kind assistance to Cross Streets Community, a program for the homeless in downtown Tucson. Cross Streets operates out of Southside Presbyterian Church.

Our congregation addresses the covenant in several ways.
Welcoming All God's Children
The congregation of Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church engaged in an educational discussion about being better stewards in welcoming all God’s children on Sunday, March 10. The Rev. Dr. Alex Hendrickson, a member of the Board of Directors, Covenant Network of Presbyterians, spent about an hour educating and equipping us in ways to expand efforts to seek equity for all people, especially LGBTQIA+, in church and society.

Adverse childhood experiences contribute to persistent teen crime, drug and alcohol use, pregnancy, eating disorders, depression, school shootings, suicidal thoughts and other public health issues. These experiences carry forward from childhood into adulthood and parenting. Sadly, this horrible cycle passes to subsequent generations unless there is effective intervention. The documentary film, “Resilience”, captures the pervasiveness and consequences of these preventable experiences.
Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church
A new book by Janet McMillian Rives, a Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church member, will be published by Finishing Line Press in late May 2024. In “Thread: A Memoir in Woven Poems”, the author reveals connecting filaments of nature, place, family and friendship over her lifetime.

Outdoor Artwork as Spiritual Inspiration
For those of us living in north Tucson at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains and along Oracle Road, everywhere you look there is beauty that is beyond the capacity for humankind to have created. Amongst all this splendor is artwork created by humans for the purpose of enhancing the surroundings and facilitating a focal point for the deepening of spiritualness.
"Faithful and Fruitful"
In recognizing a need for more focused efforts to address the needs of our community, Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church is embarking on a new approach to tending to God’s creation. Our theme is “Faithful and Fruitful” and is an outgrowth of several actions within the congregation, earlier this year, to set a new strategy for measurably growing God’s kin-dom; a place where God’s power moves in and through us to be welcoming to everyone and to find ways to help those in need.
