The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival Review
Conclusion Sadly, I feel The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival misses the mark in some key areas. While the combat is fine, and fans of the show will be glad to reunite with the core main characters, the lack of voice acting and general atmosphere I associate with The Walking Dead meant it didn’t quite engage me as much as I’d hoped. This game was reviewed based on Xbox S|X review code, using an Xbox S|X console. All of the opinions and insights here are subject to that version.
Very Interesting Times Indeed
Dr. Daniel Eustace | Feb 26, 2025 The oft-quoted saying “may you live in interesting times”, is commonly mistaken as a Chinese proverb, whereas research has shown that it is actually attributed to a 19thC British politician, Joseph Chamberlain. His full statement was “I think that you will all agree that we are living in most interesting times", with the word ‘interesting’ a reflection of typical understated British irony.
Cilla Review - Xbox Tavern
Conclusion Cilla gives all the right shoot em up vibes from the 90’s, but fails to deliver a promising concept. Enemies feel like they have just been copying and pasted from one level to another, with the same movement type. Power ups are welcomed however they seem to lack the punch the power up should have. This game was reviewed based on Xbox S|X review code, using an Xbox S|X console. All of the opinions and insights here are subject to that version. Game provided by publisher.
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Review
Conclusion Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster brings us more than just updated modern graphics, with auto saves, fully voiced cutscenes and some of quality life features. It also brings the nostalgia back for us older gamers who remember it back on the Xbox 360. But whether you’ve played this before or not, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster still proves to be a fun, wacky, and somewhat unique experience, and this is the best way to experience Frank’s story.
Contra: Operation Galuga Review
Conclusion Contra was always pegged to me as a hard platform shooter, which never really peaked my interest. However something about the cover art and a trailer I saw made me think, I have got to play this! The first level was a little slow and I found the story a little naff, but something kept drawing me back to picking up my controller and firing Contra: Operation Galuga back up.
One Last Breath Review
I am a fan of side-scrolling platformers like Inside, Songs of Iron and Limbo, and One Last Breath has taken my gaming breath away! Personally, I am not the type of character to worry about “save the world” elements, however, One Last Breath sucked me into their world and made me think, that some of my real-world actions might have a massive effect on the world as we know it.
GINSHA Review - Xbox Tavern
Conclusion I do love a pixel-art platformer, but the inclusion of RPG elements (which were a little complicated in my eyes) sucked out some of the enjoyment factor from Ginsha. I can see the replayability and the many ways you could customise your character but these just didn’t do it for me. The basic exploration, traversing and shooting is very well executed and enjoyable.
Slave Zero X Review
Conclusion Slave Zero X did not grip me with the story, however, the simplistic game mechanics were a nice change of pace. You move along the area from left to right, you can hack and slash your way through the enemies, there are various enemy types each with its unique attack pattern and weapons. As you can see from the video above the graphics are very “retro” but the developers, Poppy Works have added camera shifts as you move along the levels. This gives this 2D game more visual depth.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Review
A lot has been written about Rocksteady Studios, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League with some sites as well influencers condemning how bad the game was. Rocksteady Studios have given us some wonderful game experiences from the Batman Arkham series and we all hoped this too would be a smash hit. In my review, I will try to break down the gameplay, the story and overall enjoyment from what I have played.
Anomaly Agent Review
Conclusion I love a retro-style platformer and Anomaly Agent hits all the bells and whistles. The controls were very responsive, adding in the double jump and the dash feature for some of the traversing gave the challenges in the correct spot. Graphics were what you would expect for an 8-bit retro-style game, giving it character. I think I’d consider this possibly the best platformer from an “indie dev” in a long time. It reminded me of Kanata Zero and I LOVED that title.
Berzerk: Recharged Review
Conclusion The mechanics of Berzerk: Recharged are excellent and I can’t fault it. Dowside comes when you’ve played a few levels, they are more or less the same. While playing I was reminded how this would be a wonderful 90’s arcade cabinet game and have everyone queueing up to play. But for a modern-day console game, it does hit all the right shots. Co-op was fun and made the game more palatable. Become a Patron! This game was reviewed based on Xbox S|X review code, using an Xbox S|X console.
Nacon EVOL-X Review
Manufacturer: Nacon Where to Buy: Nacon RRP: £34.99 Third party controllers are something I’ve tried to stay away from after being burned by some shoddy PS2-era variants. The ease of use and support of official ones means I’ve preferred to stay within that realm. I thought I’d take a swing though at the new Nacon EVOL-X considering our previous glowing reviews for their other wares. As I unboxed Nacon EVOL – X I was surprised at the look as it was larger than a “normal” Xbox Series X controller.
Tricky Tanks Review
Conclusion With its cross between Worms, Bombman and Towerfall this couch co-op title, hit the spot for me. With a few tweaks to the game, this could be a lovely way to decompress after a hit action or a very long drawn-out open-world title. Tricky Tanks needs online multiplayer or some mini-campaign to increase its longevity and cater to a wider audience.
THE EXPANSE: A TELLTALE SERIES – EPISODE 5: Europa's Folly Review - Xbox Tavern
Need to catch up on all the episodes? You can find our review of Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3 and Episode 4 by clicking these links! Episode 4’s climax left us looking forward to the final episode in the series. The Expanse has taken on a rollercoaster of emotions, which could make or break the series. We started so well in the opening few minutes of the story having to make a huge choice, which I was not expecting to make, especially so early on in the game.
Grace Centre Update
Dr. Daniel Eustace | Sep 27, 2023 If you have recently driven or walked by the Southern Frontenac Community Services site (aka the Grace Centre) on Stage Coach Road, you will have noticed that the new wing construction is taking shape very nicely. Once the walls themselves were constructed, a series of other steps were quickly completed, including backfill around the building, roof installation, sub-floor installation, and flooring to connect to the existing building.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series – Episode 4: Impossible Objects Review - Xbox Tavern
Need to catch up on all the episodes? You can find out review of Episode 1, Episode 2, and Episode 3 by clicking these links! Hot off the presses from my live stream over on Twitch I have just finished Episode 4: Impossible Objects from The Expanse. The video below is Episode 4 in full, so beware spoilers: Conclusion Episode 4 did start off very, very slow, but definitely heated up near the end.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series – Episode 3: First Ones Review - Xbox Tavern
Our reviews of Telltale’s The Expanse Episode 1 and Episode 2 can be found by clicking these links. Conclusion I have just finished Episode 3 of The Expanse and am unsure how I feel. In this episode, we have just landed at the mining station and you are with Maya throughout – however, at just 50 minutes long, I felt a bit short-changed that it was all over so soon.
Astro Flame Starfighter Review
Conclusion It has been a while since I have had the need/want to replay a game over and over because of the carrot and stick. Astro Flame Starfighter gives a good balance of making you want to play more because of the enjoyment factor and the need to upgrade your ship to finish off the level/mission or get the 3 stars you wanted for completing said mission. Graphics are good when playing and handling of your ship is good too. Each boss has its own unique look and attack which was a good surprise.
THE EXPANSE: A TELLTALE SERIES – EPISODE 2 REVIEW - Xbox Tavern
Our review of Episode One for The Expanse: A Telltale Series can be found here. Conclusion The Expanse: A Telltale Series Episode 2: Hunting Grounds throws you straight into the action, continuing from the cliff-hanger of Episode 1. You and your crew are running low on resources and have to escape from the space pirates. You have more exploring to do, relationships to build and more resources to gather.
Mr. Run and Jump Review Review
VIDEO Conclusion I had a good time with Mr. Run and Jump, with the feel of the movement and inputs coming across really well. It’s challenging, but rarely unfair. The retro neon visuals also really drew me in. The levels can feel a bit overlong, though thankfully when you die you don’t get set too far back. One for those looking for something to dip in and out of. Become a Patron! This game was reviewed based on Xbox S|X review code, using an Xbox S|X console.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series - Episode 1 Review
Telltale is back with The Expanse, a Space Action/Adventure game in the style of the beloved Telltale series. All episodes for this game are expected to be out by 21st September 2023. This current review will be ongoing and have “mini-review scores” for each episode. Once all episodes are out we will drop the final review score. You take control of Camina Drummer an Executive Officer aboard the Artemis.
Layers of Fear (2023) Review
Conclusion Writing this conclusion brings a tear to my eye; on one hand, Layers of Fear looks beautiful, controls well and does give you a sense of horror. But then there is the gameplay loop – as I started playing I noticed more and more that Layers of Fear relies more on walking and looking than traditional horror gameplay. After about 30 minutes of picking notes up to “read” (the voice acting was excellent), I was disappointed. I wanted/thought more would happen.
Zombie Derby 2 Review
VIDEO Conclusion Zombie Derby 2 brings together Trials HD physics and the enjoyment of running over zombies in cars! I had a blast playing Zombie Derby 2; the controls were smooth, and the graphics were good and the music was perfectly matched. I’d have preferred not to have to need to repeat the same levels multiple times to progress, but other than that this was a fun evening of gaming. Become a Patron! Gigantosaurus Dino Kart Review
Conclusion I know I am not the intended audience, however, I did have fun with this kart racer. Controls are simple with the added feature of auto acceleration for the younger players (or the lazy ones like me), while the graphics look good and are on point for the Gigantosaurus world. It won’t challenging the karting kings out there, but for a short and sweet title to play with the little ones this’ll do just nicely. Become a Patron!
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened Review
Conclusion There’s enough here for fans of the Sherlock Holmes style detective games, though for me the constant back and forth between menus and uneven movement through the world left me uninspired to continue playing. Good Playing as Sherlock Holmes Looked like old London/England Bad Audio felt off at times Using the notebook all the time Walking felt off/odd 6 Okay You May Also Like
DC's Justice League Cosmic Chaos Review
Conclusion DC’s Justice League Cosmic Chaos was surprisingly a game I enjoyed and wanted to play repeatedly. I was going through a very big gaming funk, not knowing what to play, and jumping between games, which could hold my attention span for long. Then I started playing DCJLCC and was slowly sucked into a fun world, with many things to do.
Caverns of Mars: Recharged Review
Conclusion A straightforward concept, executed almost perfectly! Caverns of Mars: Recharged becomes very addictive as you try to complete the stages. Controls were very responsive as expected with a game where you must dodge and move quickly to avoid death. My only frustration with the title is the music, however, this is easily fixed with Spotify and an adjustment to the game audio.
Clunky Hero Review
Clunky Hero is a beautiful mix of platforming and Metroidvania-like action. The mechanics and controls feel fun to play, and the visual style really suits the style the developers are going for. Add in Monty Python-esque jokes and we've got a bit of a winner here. Become a Patron!

Darkwood Review - Xbox Tavern
Before I start, please watch the video above, Darkwood lulled me into a false sense of what the game would be and changed my expectations. Darkwood drops you straight into the story and gameplay without the usual hand-holding experience we are used to in video games- the developers literally tell us this at the start. At first, it took me some time to get up to speed with how to play, but as the game progresses you do quickly learn what you need to do. And remember Google is your friend.
Swordship Review
Jumping into this futuristic dodge-em reflex title surprised me. Think bullet hell, however, the tables are turned slightly and you are a ship which has to dodge bombs, bullets and everything else that’s thrown at you. You’ll need to make a quick split-second decision to pick up crates that give you either extra lives or upgrades to your ship.
Gamevice Flex for iPhone Review
Manufacturer: Gamevice Where To Buy: Gamevice US RRP: $109.99 Cloud gaming controllers can be very hit and miss. Either the triggers are too spongy, the analog sticks aren’t tight enough or you have to remove your phone case. Finally though, I’ve found a controller that allows you to keep your phone case on, is small and compacted when not being used and best of all feels like an Xbox controller. When you first start you need to measure your top and bottom of your phone with the “measuring card”.
Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef Review
Conclusion Whether you are playing single-player, co-op online/split screen, Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef is fun. Light-hearted and a significant change of pace for the Warhammer universe. I really enjoyed playing this with my son. Controls were straightforward and easy to get used to, though I was a bit taken back when I found out A wasn’t jump however this didn’t spoil my enjoyment. I would recommend Warhammer 40,000 if you want a local co-op shooter with drop-in and drop-out functions.
Serial Cleaners Review
VIDEO Conclusion Serial Cleaners expands on the original game nicely, with a good variety of missions and characters to play. It has its niggles, but for the most part this is a fun way to spend a few hours. Become a Patron! This game was reviewed based on Xbox S|X review code, using an Xbox S|X console. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge Review
I had a fantastic time playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shedder’s Revenge. As you can see from the video above, I would highly recommend you checking it out either via Game Pass or simply buying it outright. I played through the game solo, which was fun if perhaps not the best way to play.
