Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a freelance games writer for a technology publication.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes.
How is social media changing news?
People get their news from social media instead of established print and online sources.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
That has to be comic character Tintin, who gets to travel around the world.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's a tough, unappreciated and misunderstood gig but one that I enjoy.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is best. DMs on socials a distant second.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Online image editor, Wordpress, and of course, AI writing tools.
What's your favorite social network?
Threads.
Who do you wish followed you?
British food critic Jay Rayner.
Why did you become a journalist?
I thought I could change the world by writing about it.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Nope, but I did write for my church newspaper.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Unearthing hidden gems that people have not written about.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
That subject matter knowledge is crucial if you're covering specific beats. You can't write about law if you know nothing about it.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Feel free to pitch anytime. Whether I'm awake or online to answer, that's a different story.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Anything that's direct and to the point is best.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
A courier once turned up unannounced with a media drop for a newsmaker talking about sustainability. Dude, the carbon footprint!
What's your favorite drink?
The Old Fashioned.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At a bar drinking an Old Fashioned.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
VinePair.com.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That covering drinks, dining and travel is all about fun and play. Not.
