In a time of economic uncertainty, the stock market is currently in a correction, with the S&P 500 down about 17% since its all-time high, as of April 4. The VIX, colloquially known as the investor fear index, has also spiked, since the market expects an increase in short-term volatility. This stock market downturn is a result of many of President Trump’s new policies, primarily with large tariffs imposed on major U.S. trading partners such as Canada, Mexico and China.
How the new government will impact U.S. universities and students
The new federal administration led by President Donald Trump will shape a new era of post-secondary education. With the Department of Education (DOE) on the chopping block, federal research funding decreasing and internships being revoked, university education in America is on a dangerous decline. Many of President Trump’s initiatives stem from his larger campaign to shrink the size of the federal government.

This conundrum is largely because of the unique system of presidential election in this country, the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a group of 538 delegates, called electors, who cast their vote for president. When citizens vote for a candidate, they are technically voting for a candidate’s preferred electors.
