How Mira Chai Hyde Became Hollywood's "Godmother of Grooming"
Hairstylist Mira Chai Hyde in her West Hollywood salon, housed in her garage. Hyde wears her own clothing throughout. In Los Angeles, the most consequential heads of hair go to Mira Chai Hyde, the 67-year-old self-proclaimed “Godmother of Grooming.” Nicolas Cage’s publicist recommended her to Simu Liu, who hired Hyde to travel with him while he promoted Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021.
Guest columnist Daniel Lyons: Data centers just one factor driving need for more reliable energy
E-Edition Advertise Newsletters Subscribe Home News Opinion Sports Business Arts & Life Obituaries Classifieds Calendar Puzzles In her Oct. 17 column, “Rush for energy-hungry data centers is folly,” Johanna Neumann omits some important context. While U.S. electricity generation has remained relatively stable over the last few decades, this is not the case for worldwide generation. It has steadily increased, and the U.S. has benefited from items produced overseas and imported.
Being Transgender and Having Bipolar Disorder
I live as a transgender person, and I also have bipolar disorder. While being transgender is not a mental illness, these two things still have a lot in common. Over the years, I've reflected on what these two things share. Today, I'll discuss the commonalities between them and what it feels like to live both as a transgender person and as a person with bipolar disorder.
What Is Identity Policing?
Identity policing is when a person tries to tell another person (usually of a marginalized identity) that their identity is invalid or that they can't or don't belong to an identity group that the person is claiming to identify with. I wanted to talk about this after my last post where I talked about what it means to be a lesbian. Unfortunately, even within the queer community, I have had my identity policed on more than one occasion. Identity policing can be extremely hurtful and problematic.
What Does It Mean to Be a Lesbian?
Lesbian is the first letter of the queer alphabet soup. We've all heard LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer), but what does lesbian actually mean? People used to define lesbian as "women loving women" but this definition is outdated and doesn't take into account the many transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming humans who still proudly call themselves lesbians. I am one of these people. Recently my girlfriend was with a friend.
For a Queer Community in Los Angeles, This Public Park Is a Lifeline
As the identity, health and freedom of queer people is threatened, the friends said, it is more important than ever to be able to meet in a public space that doesn’t draw a lot of unwanted attention and where you can feel fully yourself. “Sometimes you want to be self-expressive,” Rory said.
Lauren Sánchez: Jeff Bezos and I are like the ‘Brady Bunch’
Lauren Sánchez’s and Jeff Bezos’ families are so blended they believe they’re the “Brady Bunch.” The Emmy Award-winning reporter told WSJ. magazine that she and the Amazon founder live low-key lives when they’re with their children. “On a typical Saturday, we hang out, we have dinner with the kids, which is always fun because you never know where the conversation is going to go with this many kids,” Sánchez told the magazine.
Where the Noise Doesn't Get — Blind Magazine
Invited to visit Casa do Rio, a youth center in the Brazilian Amazon, Daniel Jack Lyons decided to spend time with queer and trans kids, who are struggling to find their own place in a community plagued by issues of environmental degradation, violence, and discrimination. Coming to the site with a background in social anthropology and being a member of the LGBTQ community himself, he chose a collaborative approach for this challenge.
Daniel Jack Lyons • Like a River
I met Daniel years ago. He is one of the most talented artists involved in our PhotoVogue community, and we exhibited his work at our festival back in 2017. It has been a pleasure to see him grow as an artist. His work moves me deeply—it’s authentic, delicate, poetic, never voyeuristic, and it comes from a place deep inside him. His debut monograph, Like a River, published by Loose Joints, is the result of one of the most beautiful projects that I have seen in years.
Sandra Short Takes Oath of Office for DeGraff Village Council
The DeGraff Village Council met last night. The first order of business was the swearing-in of returning council member Sandra Short. The American Legion is looking to purchase flags for the cemetery. The American Legion is holding a chicken and tenderloin meal from 4 until 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2022. Mayor Stephanie Orsborne said the well pump went down from an electrical issue. The electric company is coming out today (January 19, 2022) to resolve the issue.
Coming Out Is Never Really Over
Photo: Klaus Vedfelt/Stone/Getty Images Plus Coming up on one year ago, I came out of the closet publicly here on Mediumas bisexual. I thought, in that moment, the hardest part was over. I came out publicly — my friends, family, colleagues, and Medium readers all knew my long-hidden secret: I am attracted to both men and women. Naively, I thought that the hardest part was over. Little did I know, coming out is a process that is almost never done for LGBTQ+ folx.
Riding Out the Pandemic Is So Much Better in the Bay Than Los Angeles
It seems like only yesterday when I sat atop that picturesque Santa Monica rooftop, the Pacific Ocean rolling in the distance. At the time, I still drank alcohol (and way too much of it) and held a crisp glass of sauvignon blanc in my hand, swirling it gracefully. It was 2013, and I was visiting my boyfriend at the time, a Southern California native. Two bottles of wine deep, I uttered, “Hey, baby, I want to move to L.A.” My boyfriend looked surprised. “Really?” he said, surprised.

The Buzz About Firefly
"The reality of the software business today is that if you find something that can make you ridiculously rich, then that's something Microsoft is going to want to take from you," Metral says. "All we can do is meet with them and try to see what they're going to do to us when they feel like doing it.

Amazon didn’t break law by banning sales of Google, Apple streaming players
The Titans of Silicon Valley have long battled for control of the television, that stubborn holdout in the living room that has long resisted being dragged into the Internet age. This battle heated up last week when Amazon banned the sale of Apple TV or Google’s Chromecast units on its site. The announcement triggered a deluge of criticism, including calls by some to investigate whether the decision violates antitrust laws. But these calls are misguided.
The myths about the internet’s colossus
San Francisco – Google is the biggest and best-known internet company in the world, a colossus whose revenue this year is expected to top $65 billion (R780bn). It makes headlines seemingly every week. But despite being so familiar, Google is often misunderstood. Here are four common myths. Search is Google’s primary product. Its search engine is so widely used that “Google” has become a dictionary-approved verb, and the company makes virtually all its money by selling ads connected to search.
