Reliable energy and modern infrastructure are central to Africa’s growth
In global forums, we have spent years debating the architecture of a just energy transition. The challenge now is not to broaden the conversation but to move to more decisive action and improve delivery. For emerging and developing economies, including those in Africa, the transition requires affordable finance at scale – that must be sequenced sensibly and anchored in credible private and public institutions.

Africa can help shape a resilient global financial future
The world stands at a critical juncture as escalating geopolitical tensions and fragmentation, underscored by US tariff impositions and retaliatory actions, have resulted in an unprecedented level of uncertainty that casts a shadow over global economic growth and stability. African economies — many of which are deeply integrated into global trade and financial networks — are particularly vulnerable.

DANIEL MMINELE: GNU an opportunity and mandate for a step change for SA
As the government of national unity (GNU) marks its first 100 days in office, optimism is growing among domestic and international investors who expect more business-friendly policies and accelerated implementation, both of which are vital for economic revival and growth after years of sluggish performance. There is cause for both celebration and caution.

DANIEL MMINELE: I will miss your friendship and wise counsel, Peter Matlare
Peter Matlare’s passing is a huge blow to all of us at Absa in countries across the African continent. To many of us he was not just a colleague but a counsellor, mentor and brother who always made time to lend an ear. The outpouring of grief across Absa campuses, and indeed the country, shows how much respected and loved Peter was. I had known Peter for many years, and he had become a close friend before we became colleagues.
Greater challenges and scrutiny lie ahead for central banks
While the global economy emerged from recession in the fourth quarter of 2009, the pace of growth since has been lacklustre. Many have argued that successive rounds of QE only encouraged risk taking in the financial economy rather than in the real economy.

Globalisation and free trade are not enemies
Short-termism and expediency are the enemies of the positive forces of free trade and globalisation, say SARB deputy governor Daniel Mminele and Andreas Dombret, a member of the executive board of the Bundesbank. WE ARE living in times of elevated uncertainty which could intensify in the period ahead, given the heightened risks to global growth brought about by the current geopolitical environment. We have been witnessing a rise in populism against multilateralism and globalisation.
