Diagnosis in child and adolescent psychopathology: A useful tool when applied with care or a misunderstood, politicised concept?
Diagnoses define a cluster of signs, symptoms and impairments that clinicians use to communicate a hypothesis about a person's condition (Pine, 2025). Whilst diagnoses are vital for clinical care and public health, they possess underappreciated limitations. These include variation over time and across contexts, with definitions that evolve in ways that then may contribute to public questions regarding overdiagnosis and overmedicalisation of youth psychopathology.
Leveraging parental processes in the treatment of childhood anxiety disorders: insights from developmental neuroscience
Abstract Pediatric anxiety disorders are common and debilitating and can be chronic. Although current treatments are efficacious for many, up to 50% of children do not sufficiently improve following current evidence-based treatment. Recent work underscores the potential for optimizing treatment based on individual variation in parenting behaviors.

Brain Age Prediction in Generalized Anxiety Disorder Using Functional Neuroimaging and Graph Convolutional Neural Networks
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common forms of psychopathology (Wu et al., 2025). Thus, research investigating its etiology is of utmost concern. Examinations of how biological aging plays a role in the development and etiology of psychopathology (Cole and Franke, 2017) are becoming common. While structural neuroimaging has been widely utilized for brain age research, functional imaging has been used relatively sparingly.
The role of the dorsal attention network in attention bias modification for social anxiety disorder
Abstract Identifying reliable biomarkers of treatment response is central to advancing personalized psychiatry. While whole-brain functional connectivity models have shown promise in predicting clinical outcomes, especially for broad-spectrum interventions like cognitive-behavioral therapy, targeted treatments may benefit from more specific neuromarkers.
From symptom-based heterogeneity to mechanism-based profiling in youth ADHD: the promise of computational psychiatry - Neuropsychopharmacology
Abstract Mental health conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mood disorders show marked symptom heterogeneity, complicating diagnosis and treatment. Computational psychiatry offers a way forward by using mathematical models, such as sequential sampling models, applied to trial-by-trial behavior in well-defined neurocognitive tasks, to infer latent mechanisms underlying behavior.
Adolescence under fire: a multi‐method study of psychological vulnerability and resilience among adolescents impacted by war
Introduction A growing number of people worldwide face war-related adversity (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 2018), entailing physical and psychological risks related to profound uncertainty and chronic stress (Carpiniello, 2023; Levi-Belz, Groweiss, Blank, & Neria, 2024).
Validation of CBCL depression scores of adolescents in three independent datasets
What's known? CBCL-Aff is the only continuous measure of depression in the highly popular ABCD dataset, as well as in other studies. What's relevant? Using valid measures is important to ensure the quality of research that uses them, and they are essential for measurement-based care. What's new?
Introducing the “IJMPR Didactic Papers”
Recent years have seen a range of statistical and methodological innovations of major relevance in mental health and psychopathology research that have become increasingly common in mental health research, with many theoretical and methodological developments quickly gaining traction.
Sex-Specific Distributed White Matter Microarchitectural Alterations in Preadolescent Youths With Anxiety Disorders: A Mega-Analytic Study
Anxiety disorders emerge in childhood and early adolescence and are among the most common psychiatric illnesses in this age group (1, 2). Youths with anxiety disorders, such as generalized, separation, and social anxiety disorder, suffer from significant impairment and face increased risk for additional stress-related psychopathology (3).

Changes in Behavior and Neural Dynamics across Adolescent Development
Results We conducted 128 channel EEG recordings in adolescents while they executed the flanker task. Data were collected at three ages longitudinally for a total of 331 recordings from 179 adolescents (after quality control). In the task, subjects executed 384 trials in 12 blocks in a single session. Subjects were first shown a cue (plus sign), and after a variable delay, they were given a stimulus (Fig. 2A). Their task was to indicate with a key press whether the central arrow pointed left or right.
Commentary on the special issue: Leveraging measurement to refine developmental perspectives on psychopathology
1 INTRODUCTION This Special Issue of International Journal of Methods in Psychiatric Research highlights developmental perspectives on irritability and related dimensions of psychopathology. The issue's papers (Alam et al., 2023; Hirsch et al., 2023; Kirk et al., 2023; Wakschlag et al., 2023; Wigg et al., 2023; Wiggins et al., 2023a, 2023b) extend a solid foundation of research to target questions on pediatric emotional problems and applications of dimensional methods.
Changes in behavior and neural dynamics across adolescent development
Abstract Adolescence is an important developmental period during which substantial changes occur in brain function and behavior. Several aspects of executive function, including response inhibition, improve during this period. Correspondingly, structural imaging studies have documented consistent decreases in cortical and subcortical gray matter volume, and post-mortem histological studies have found substantial (∼40%) decreases in excitatory synapses in prefrontal cortex.
Zuranolone Treatment for Depression: Steady Progress in Mechanism-Focused Therapeutics?
Few articles appearing in medical journals provide more important information than randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Readers are in for a rare treat by encountering two such papers in the September issue of the Journal dealing with a common theme. Both RCTs examine zuranolone, which targets γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling as an allosteric modulator of GABAA receptors. In one article, Deligiannidis et al. (1) test efficacy for postpartum depression, and in the other, Clayton et al.
42. Confirming Computational Synaptic Pruning Model Predictions in Adolescent Longitudinal EEG Data
Adolescence is a critical period for both behavioral and brain development with extensive synaptic pruning. A previously published computational model linked improvements in working memory and cognitive control to more stable brain dynamics derived by pruning of network connections. We test this model’s predictions in a longitudinal flanker task EEG dataset from 181 children (aged between 12 and 20 years old).
