Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

The one I currently have.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! In junior and regular high school.

How is social media changing news?

Ask Elon Musk. More seriously, the audience can now be more involved and interact with reporters and be a part of the story.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Don't have one.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means covering a topic thoroughly, getting both sides of the story, and being upfront about your thoughts or biases with the reader. In addition, being empathetic to the reader so that all context and relevant information is provided without them having lingering questions.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email or social media like Twitter. I rarely check LinkedIn but I am trying to be better at it.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Windows PC, Microsoft 365/Office, Edge web browser, Slack, Telegram, and Skype.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, although ... it's been a ride lately.

Who do you wish followed you?

Simply fellow colleagues or those interested in modern computing technology.

Why did you become a journalist?

It was an accident. It started off as a hobby with simple forum posts, then blogging, and it grew and morphed into a full-time career.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Deeper dives into Microsoft's technology like Cortana and AI.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be passionate. You have to love this stuff inside and out, and if you do, you’ll find success.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Late afternoons.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

One for an electric bike.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

People literally pitch windows, as in glass ones, for a building, confusing our title with Windows (Microsoft OS).

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

The gym, trying not to atrophy.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Atlantic.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Since we focus primarily on Windows PCs, Microsoft, and related technology, there is a perception that we cannot be critical. However, the opposite is the case. Since we use this technology (and not just cover it), we have a vested personal interest in it being good, which means our criticisms tend to be more thorough than other publications.
