Ancient Egyptians knew the Temple of Dendur as the residence of the goddess Isis, who would interact with worshipers there through her cult statue. Today we know the temple as an event space, in the most generous sense.

Opinion | They Saw Their Neighbors Taken Away by ICE. Then They Made a Plan.
Elizabeth Castillo wasn’t an activist until Immigration and Customs Enforcement started taking away her neighbors. It all began in June, after Donald Trump directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to sweep Los Angeles, then used scattered violence at protests of ICE’s tactics as a pretext to send in the military. Castillo felt her working-class neighborhood in Pasadena, just outside Los Angeles, was under siege. Six people, she said, were seized at a Winchell’s doughnut shop.

The Artifacts of New York's Pandemic Era Original
Scan your eyes around New York City, and you'll spot them everywhere, these artifacts of the pandemic, lingering through intent or indifference. Image These remnants of that anxious time now serve as some of the only public reminders of those deadly years. Weathered signs mandating mask use, QR codes posted around restaurant tabletops, faded social distancing stickers plastered on the ground - taken together, they form an urban fossil record of a place that has otherwise largely moved on.
Don't Say 'Macbeth' and Other Strange Rituals of the Theater World Original
You may not have realized it, but there's little chance you've heard anyone whistle inside a theater. In the old days, sailors often worked the ropes backstage, bringing to show business codes like command whistles. So a whistle meant as a compliment, or to get a person's attention, might have landed a piece of scenery on someone's head. Theater is full of these customs - many arising, like most rituals, from hazy origins. Still, show people hold on to them.

“When your work is based on ideas, when your design is a representation of an idea, and you use materials that have a dignity, a certain classic weight to them, then fortunately you’re designing in a more atemporal way.” —Sebastian ErraZuriz
Sebastian ErraZuriz’ Expression of Ideas
Sebastian ErraZuriz blurs the boundaries between art, technology, design, and craft to create socially conscious work. When I video call Sebastian ErraZuriz at his New York apartment, the multihyphenate creator, activist, and more recently tech developer is working on a project to be installed in October in his place of birth: Santiago, Chile.
Imagined Homeland
Rejecting colonial documentary methods, this photographer tells the story of Arunachal Pradesh’s Lisu people by harnessing mythological symbolism in his cinematic stills. As a creative medium, the possibilities for photography are endless. Artists around the world spend each day piecing together innovative visuals grounded in portraiture, documentary and photojournalistic styles, as well as conceptual and chemical experimentation played out in the darkroom.
Sisyphus - Essay by Cat Lachowskyj
The legend of Sisyphus is one of those myths that has come to pervade Greek mythology, recognizable as a story mirrored in all facets of pop culture, from comics to television to contemporary art. In the original legend, Sisyphus, the king of Ephyra, is punished by the gods for his selfish deception. He is forced to roll a boulder up a steep hill, only to have it roll back down again when it nears the top, trapping him in an endless cycle of labor for all eternity.
Ruptured - Interview by Cat Lachowskyj
While formal training in photography is often necessary to provide a foundational understanding of the medium, it can also box creativity in, so that artists focus on imitation more than their own unique artistic expression. It’s easy to become consumed with finding the tiniest flaw or inconsistency, rather than reflecting on personal growth and self-expression.

Mukono - Video Interview with Bastiaan Woudt
Since first picking up a camera in 2009, photographer Bastiaan Woudt has generated an incredible oeuvre of black and white images that blur the distinctions between photographs and surreal paintings. Rather than focusing on the crisp details of perfect light and shadow, the photographer embraces stark contrast and hazy glitches catalyzed by movement.
Things We Can Relate To
When we think of the term “travel photography,” it often incites expectations of stereotypical photographs meant to show off a person’s vacation. But recently, many photographers have pushed the boundaries of this genre to incorporate more conceptual work driven by a personal aesthetic rather than shiny, perfectly-packaged subject matter.
The Circle Is Now Complete
On September 30, 2016, Alex Bird joined Jack Hitt onstage at the Institute Library in New Haven, Connecticut, as part of the ongoing series “Amateur Hour,” in which various tinkerers, zealots, and collectors discuss their obsessions. Bird, who lives in Kingston, New York, works to restore cognitive and social skills in survivors of brain injuries. He is ranked as a knight and deacon at the Temple of the Jedi Order, where he has three apprentices.
The Instillation of Nationalism

Birthday Suits - Photographs and text by Lucy Hilmer
For 40 years, I’ve photographed myself on my birthday wearing nothing but my white Lollipop underpants, shoes and socks. I made my first Birthday Suit self-portrait in Death Valley, CA in 1974. Without fail, I’ve faced my camera every April 22nd since then to create a coded history of one woman’s journey through time.
