1 Introduction Continuous mixer-settler systems are widely applied in liquid–liquid extraction processes. The two unit operations have different tasks and require opposing conditions with respect to drop sizes that make it challenging to operate the total process. Although tiny droplets with a large specific interfacial area are preferable for the mass transfer in the extraction step inside the stirred vessel, larger drops are beneficial for the following settling step in the separator.
