The need to build governance rails for AI and neurotechnology
York University and the Centre for International Governance (CIGI) have partnered to build new governance frameworks for AI and neurotechnology. York’s program, Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, and the Waterloo, Ont.-based independent think tank CIGI launched a 16-month pilot partnership aimed at building governance for two fields whose regulatory frameworks in Canada have struggled to keep pace with the underlying science.
Who gets left at the gate? A younger generation’s perspective on AI's promise
There's a way of talking about AI that has become almost its own genre. You know the pitch: we are at an inflection point, a civilizational shift, and companies that merely tinker around the edges – automating this, optimizing that – are going to be blindsided by the ones willing to reimagine everything from scratch. It's the "invent, don't adopt" school of thought, and right now it is everywhere in boardrooms, consulting decks and executive LinkedIn feeds. It's not wrong.
Treasurers get tapped to fulfil racial justice pledges
Author Danielle Burns Date published January 11, 2022 Categories Since George Floyd’s murder in May 2020, many of the world’s largest public companies pledged nearly $50bn to increase opportunities for Black homeownership, entrepreneurship and education. The message, once again, is clear: more investors have been zeroing in on ESG (environmental, social and governance) performance for a while now, and there’s no going back.

That obviously makes sense, as banks hold trillions in assets that are at risk if the effects of climate change can’t be mitigated in the coming years. The problem, however, is that while banks talk up their climate-friendly investments, critics of the sector point out that their efforts won’t amount to much if they keep financing massive fossil fuel projects.
Six Key GOP Senators Could Tip the Balance on the American Jobs Plan
This Thursday, Republican senators from Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wyoming will meet with President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss infrastructure. These six senators could determine the fate of the president’s ambitious American Jobs Plan proposal. They could help ensure that the American economy leaps to the head of the global decarbonization race - or they could enable other nations to leave the U.S. behind in the dust. Why these six states?
