Trusting Your Intuition Could Be Your Wisest Career Move Yet
Think about the last time you had a big decision to make. Maybe taking a promotion that didn’t quite tick all the boxes, or renting a more expensive office because your start-up had outgrown that co-working space. Did you sit down and make a pros and cons list? Talk the decision through with your mentor? Check in with your gut? “Intuition is essentially your gut wisdom,” explains London-based executive coach and psychologist Dr Perpetua Neo.
Meet The Woman Giving A New Face To Troll Hunting
Ginger Gorman is a troll hunter. But not the kind who seeks out ugly monsters that lurk under bridges and scare unsuspecting billy goats. Gorman is an award-winning journalist. Her weapon of choice is a laptop and an internet connection. Her targets are those anonymous individuals who use the internet to demean, mock, harass, terrorise and terrify.
The Limits Of Loyalty: Why Women Are More Loyal To Their Bosses Than Men
We don’t stay put at work anymore. “Our parents’ culture was of a job for life,” London-based executive coach and psychologist Dr Perpetua Neo says. “These days, even if you want that, there’s no such thing – so there’s a shift in the way we think about loyalty.
Why You Should Know Stella Miles Franklin's Name
The Miles Franklin Literary Prize is one of Australia’s most prestigious literary prizes. It has been around since 1957 and over the years the award became something of a boy’s club, despite being named after a woman, Stella Maria Sarah ‘Miles’ Franklin. Yes, you read that correctly. Two of Australia’s premier literature prizes, the Miles Franklin Literary Prize and the Stella Prize, are both named after the same woman. You’ve hit the glass ceiling. And our paywall.
Architectural Escapes: Dimora delle Balze
From Baroque monuments to crystal clear waters that rival the Caribbean, Val di Noto in the southeast corner of Sicily has swiftly ascended to one of Italy’s ‘must do’ summer vacation hotspots. This is in part thanks to the arrival of Dimora delle Balze in 2017, an elevated masseria (traditional farmhouse lodging) located in the countryside between Noto and Palazzolo Acreide. You’ve hit the glass ceiling. And our paywall. Help us smash it by becoming a Future Woman for as little as $7 a month.
How One Mother's Problem Became A Million Dollar Business
The lack of telemedicine networks specialising in women’s health only came to Katherine Ryder’s attention when she was heavily pregnant. Working as a venture capitalist at the time, Ryder spoke to female friends who had dealt with the same struggle and no answer prevailed – so Ryder created one. Maven was born not long after she became a mother. The New York-based digital clinic specialises in women’s health care, allowing women to receive the advice they need without physically visiting a doctor.
Yes, Routine Is The Answer To Creativity
American novelist Patricia Highsmith ate bacon and eggs for breakfast every morning. Former US President Barack Obama had a wardrobe full of identical suits. And you’re probably familiar with journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson’s infamous, drug-addled daily routine, starting at three in the afternoon. It may seem counter-intuitive, but establishing habits for the more mundane aspects of your life can actually help boost creativity.
8 Things FW Is Loving Right Now
“Cue the synthesizer and the spandex. Watch the second season of the Netflix series Glow – What could be better than witnessing a bunch of fierce and foxy women (also ’80s Hollywood misfits) master the art of wrestling–and of life– led by charismatic actor Alison Brie? I liked the first season a lot but the second takes it to a new level. The creators of the show directly responded to the Weinstein scandal and what resulted is smart, shocking and gripping.
To MBA Or Not To MBA
The Masters of Business Administration (MBA) was once a rite of passage. If you wanted to guarantee yourself a seat around the boardroom table, or sit at the head of your own, two years of study at a top business school learning accountancy, marketing and leadership was the recommended route. But, times are changing.
When Office Prejudice Prevents Workplace Pride
Do you bring your whole self to work? Most of us have a ‘work’ persona. A version of ourselves that’s a little different to the one who at exists at home; the one who sometimes eats cereal for dinner and talks to the cat. Our work selves tend to be slightly muted and somewhat more stoic in the face of criticism. They take a business-like approach to problem solving and are concerned with outcomes over emotions.
When Good Men Ask: But Where’s The Line?
Following the initial blanket media coverage of Hollywood’s #MeToo moment, the conversation threatened to rebound in multiple, unexpected directions. Like an AFL footy, the bounce was hard to predict. We wondered who would be next; partially concerned for the victims but mostly just sucked in by a perverse form of voyeurism.
Hotel review: Ungasan's luxury villas, Bali
Cut into clifftop, the subterranean master suite is encased in double-heighted glass doors which slide all the way open to take in the sea breeze and the ocean blues.
The Life-Changing Magic Of Not Buying So Much
In her 2016 book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo set about changing the world one perfectly folded jumper at a time. Kondo quickly became a household name as everyone attempted to master the now trademarked “KonMari Method”, a tidying technique hinged on the emotional value of belongings – and whether they “sparked joy”. Yet, this wasn’t a simple matter of cleaning your closet. There was a serious side that was hard to ignore: as a society we’d reached peak “stuff”.
Habits Of Female Leaders
It was a trip to South-East Asia in her twenties, and a sabbatical to Harvard Business School in her forties, which prompted Julie Bishop’s idea for an initiative now supporting more than 30,000 Australians studying abroad. It was teaching herself to kitesurf, which got Melanie Perkins the investment for her company Canva, now worth a casual US$1 billion. It was burning out during her first startup, one she sold at 23, which sparked Yunha Kim’s second hugely successful app, Simple Habit.
Man rubs his crotch against undercover police officer
When you're on a packed morning train, it's an unavoidable – and uncomfortable – reality that your precious personal space will be invaded by total strangers. But when a man repeatedly rubbed his crotch against a woman on the NYC subway, she was armed with the full-force of the law to take down his seedy advances. Felipe Mondragon, 52, who has now has been arrested, allegedly assaulted the plainclothes female police officer on an uptown train that had just left Union Square station.
Girlfriend in six-hour standoff with police after boyfriend 'insults her pasta'
If you're the cook at home, you'll know how infuriating it is when you dish-up a meticulously planned dinner and your partner fails to notice the artfully arranged garnish, then has the nerve to not react with totally ecstasy over your culinary talents. But whatever you do, try not to totally lose the plot if you’re not satisfied with their response.
Hotel review: Spicers Sangoma, an adult-only bush paradise
Making my way out of Sydney's mid-morning weekend traffic, passing Richmond and through to the foothills of the Blue Mountains, the hum of traffic slowly fades-out to the sound and sights of orchards, grazing horses and bush vistas. Before I've even arrived at my destination, my senses begin to sink into the soft, relaxed state that escaping the stress of the city for country roads tends to bring.

Tasting Central Otago's wine region in style
There's more to do in Queenstown than skiing and adventure sports, and drinking some of the world's greatest Pinot Noir wines is definitely one of them. In less than 30 minutes' drive you'll enter Central Otago wine country, a rugged terrain which was one of the backdrops for the Hobbit film trilogy. It's the world's southernmost winegrowing area and one of the youngest.
Hotel review: The Rees Hotel Queenstown, alpine luxury at its finest
"If you can jump out of it, dive off it, climb it or slide down it, we have it all," my egger airport cab driver barked at me on my way into Queenstown, the world-renowned adrenaline seeker’s hotspot. Given that I'm pretty freaked out staring over a balcony, I was happy to take the friendly cabby's word for it. Luckily, there's way more to Queenstown than adventure sports, and that's exactly I was there.

Home listed 'walking distance to KFC' sells in a week
If you've ever sold a home, you'll know how important the marketing campaign is to the result — and a catchy slogan goes a long way. When a three-bedroom house in Mangere East, Auckland, had been struggling on the market for 10 weeks the owners called in Pat Lapalapa, aka "Salesman Pat" to work some PR magic. Lapalapa, a Samoan real estate agent with Harcourts Manukau, convinced the owners to go with an unusual new campaign pitch around the homes walking proximity to the local KFC.
Rebecca Judd loves this The Block couple's style - 9homes
Last night's Ronald McDonald House Foundation challenge was full of ups and down for the contestants. While most of the couples produced beautiful spaces for the charity that provides a 'home away from home' for families with sick children receiving treatment at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Sarah and Jason failed to finish their room. "This is a disaster," said guest judge and style-queen Rebecca Judd on entering the room.
Couple build beautiful from trash
A Perth couple have transformed trash into a stunning eco home, using every inch of the 200-square-metre plot of land. Made almost entirely of rubbish and salvage materials, the usual designer home is located in Highgate, Perth. Hidden behind a rusty gate, every piece of the home tells a story; from a salvaged front door from one of Alan Bond's mansions to a retro bath from Adelaide. As the video above shows, the materials for the home were sourced from all over Australia.
Hotel review: Get cosy in Hong Kong’s Mini Hotel
After traipsing around the bustling, hilly streets of Hong Kong’s Central District, sweating up a storm thanks to the humidity in the peak of summer, we finally made it to the Mini Hotel. True to their understated name the hotel’s entrance was also mini. Unlike the other hotels in the area, there was no grand entrance or dapper looking bell boys to take your luggage.
Hotel review: The Skye Hotel Suites, Parramatta’s first 5-star hotel

What was once your average residential postcode is now a thriving metropolis bursting with character, diversity and incredible food. It's transformation which has taken over ten years.
Amsterdam rental flat lists with 'no cooking in the kitchen'
Sydneysiders bemoan the competitive Australian housing market, but in comparison to Amsterdam's sky-rocketing property prices and subsequent housing shortage, things might not be as bad as they seem. An Amsterdam estate agent has listed a 35-square-metre rental apartment boasting its own "private kitchen" for the bargain *cough* price of $1640 (€1100) per month. This all seems pretty kosher on first glance.
Derelict Lilyfield house covered in warning signs sells for $1.26m
Peeling pant and a collapsing ceiling didn't turn off potential buyers from an uninhabitable three-bedroom Lilyfield home on the weekend. The derelict property, which was on the market for the first time in 30 years, sold for a staggering $1.26 million on Saturday. According to Domain, ten groups registered to bid on the inner-west home.

What's it really like staying in Australia's first capsule hotel?
Earlier this year, Australia welcomed its first ever capsule hotel, offering 70 beds over three floors above Sydney's famous Century Bar in the heart of the CBD. It's a quirky addition to the current high end offerings the city is best known for. Having just come back from Japan, I was suffering from a serious case of wanderlust, and a capsule hotel felt like the perfect way to treat my symptoms.
Escape the crowds and head to Italy's best kept secret, Puglia
When it comes to travelling in Italy, the likes of Rome, Florence and the Amalfi Coast get all the glory. Yes, they're beautiful places, but the long queues, hordes of tourists, and steep prices can everything a little tiresome and expensive. So when I was planning my own European adventure, it got me thinking, where do the Italians go on holiday? Surely – I thought – they’re not doing packed tours at the Colosseum and the Tower of Pisa?
$442m Bel Air estate is the nation’s most expensive listing
The Chartwell Estate, owned by late TV executive and Univision head Jerry Perenchio, went on the market yesterday for a staggering $442 million. It's now the most expensive listed home in the US. Coming in at over US$100 million more than a bespoke $330 million Bel Air mansion listed earlier this year by high-spec-king, developer Bruce Makowsky. One of Bel Air’s most well-documented estates, Chartwell was built in 1933 by architect Sumner Spaulding.

The transformation of London Olympics grounds into the city's hottest postcode
It’s been five years since the London 2012 Olympics, and the stadium and former athlete’s village is now a hive of activity with E20 becoming London’s newest, hippest postcode and part of the Olympic legacy. Pre-Olympics, Stratford, in the east London borough of Newham, was pretty undesirable. But the Olympics regeneration has seen the area transform and become a top tourist destination.
The secret Airbnb-style site for travellers who want a slick design stay
When Airbnb launched in 2012, it undoubtedly changed the face of travel. It's taken centre stage ever since, generating as many headlines as it has stays. But a year later, in 2013, a similar-style booking site also launched but with little fuss, and it's been bubbling away under the surface ever since. PlansMatter is a bit of a secret but with a cult following.
Man transforms council house into 'Renaissance-style palace'
Retired decorator Robert Burns has spent 14 years turning his home into a 'Renaissance-style palace'. The 69-year-old painted every inch of his three-bedroom home in Brighton, Sussex, to be reminiscent of a 15th-century style palace after being inspired by a book he found at a car boot sale. Burns has recreated works of some of the world's artistic greats, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Vietnam: The 'new' Thailand? Wait. Not so fast...
If you’ve ever visited Thailand, you know it can’t be duplicated. Yet according to the latest travel buzz, its second coming has arrived. Lately, many are touting Vietnam – two countries to the right, a hop over Laos in the north and a skip over Cambodia in the south – as the “new” Thailand. It’s a brilliant marketing hook...but thoroughly misleading. Comparing Thailand to Vietnam is like holding up New South Wales to Queensland.
Hotel review: Elements of Byron Resort & Spa
I’ll confess; Byron Bay is my kind of place. I love the laid-back atmosphere, the quirky coffee shops and bars and, of course, the stunning beach. So, to be honest, I’d be happy in a cardboard box if it meant I was still getting my daily dose of sun, sea and sand. But a cardboard box, Elements of Byron Resort & Spa is most certainly not. Think more like a bunch of uber-stylish cabins, surrounding a stunning lagoon pool.

Located near the village Randa along the Europaweg foot trail, the new Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge runs between 1,600 metres and 2,200 metres above sea level, along the deepest cut valley in Switzerland.
How to fly business class for economy prices
Got champagne tastes but a (domestic) beer budget? That doesn’t mean you should disregard the pointy end of the plane altogether, writes Dilvin Yasa. It’s hard to go back to economy once you’ve had a taste of business class. After all, there’s flying to Europe upright in a cramped seat and a choice between undiscernible stew or undiscernible casserole, and then there’s flying flat with an ‘order any time you like’ menu, gifted pyjama sets and endless flat whites.
