Opinion | I Lost My Wife. I Won’t Lose Broadway Too.
Guest Essay Sept. 24, 2021 Credit...Illustration by Arsh Raziuddin/The New York Times, Photography via Getty By Danny Burstein Mr. Burstein is a veteran Broadway performer who stars in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” which reopens Friday night. For 18 months, theater all but disappeared in New York City. For those of us who work on and around stages, our life blood came to a full stop. The theater district was a ghost town.

Danny Burstein on the Devastating Loss of His Wife, Fellow Broadway Star Rebecca Luker (Guest Column)
In a deeply personal essay for The Hollywood Reporter, the Tony-nominated 'Moulin Rouge' star reflects on the "empty, dark abyss" left behind by his wife of more than 20 years, who died of complications of ALS in December. There is a void. Where once there was sunlight. There is a void. Where once there was a marriage. There is a void. There is now an empty, dark abyss that has taken the place of the warm, comforting glow of the sun, a bridge over which love crossed freely.

There is a void. Where once there was sunlight. There is a void. Where once there was a marriage. There is a void. There is now an empty, dark abyss that has taken the place of the warm, comforting glow of the sun, a bridge over which love crossed freely. And I can’t seem to cross over the darkness. I want to step over it, leap over it. I feel she wants me to. But I’m not prepared, I’m not equipped. It seems impossible. Rebecca Luker passed away due to complications from ALS on Dec.
Broadway Star Danny Burstein on His Struggles After COVID-19: "I'm Not Really Sure How I'm Doing" (Guest Column)
The six-time Tony Award nominee and 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical' star reflects on his life following six days in the hospital, including caring for his wife, fellow stage performer Rebecca Luker, in her battle with ALS. In April, The Hollywood Reporter published an essay I'd written about my six-day experience in New York's St. Luke's Hospital, now Mount Sinai, while suffering from COVID-19, with difficulty breathing and a temperature that at one point hit 104.
If It Bleeds
*#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER* Includes “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone”—now a Netflix original film starring Donald Sutherland and Jaeden Martell! From the legendary storyteller and master of short fiction Stephen King comes an extraordinary collection of four new “exceptionally compelling novellas that reaffirm [King’s] mastery of the form” (The Washington Post).
Broadway Star Danny Burstein on His Harrowing Coronavirus Experience: "Strength Through Stillness" (Guest Column)
The six-time Tony nominee, who was starring in 'Moulin Rouge' at the time of the shutdown, opens up about the alarming progression of his illness, his terrifying hospitalization and his recovery at home. Editor's note: One of Broadway's most beloved performers, Danny Burstein has drawn rave reviews for his superlative work in both plays and musicals.
No tears for oil-heat switchers
To the editor: Your article “Business groups say natural-gas delivery has reached a crisis point," about the increasing likelihood of natural-gas shortages in the extended New York area (New England too) because of the lack of pipelines and the related attempts by mulchyheads to block new ones, described the cutoffs already affecting some customers.
Man shouts 'Heil Hitler, heil Trump' during Fiddler on the Roof performance
BALTIMORE -- A man laced the atmosphere of a Baltimore theater with menace when he began shouting "Heil Hitler! Heil Trump!" during intermission of a classic play set in a Jewish village in czarist Russia. The patron's pro-Nazi and pro-Trump outburst during a Wednesday night production of "Fiddler on the Roof" sent panicked people running for the exits at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre.
9/11-Responders’ Limbo
Governor Cuomo’s recent signing into law of Senate Bill S6398A appropriately expands sick-leave options for government employees who are suffering from illnesses attributed to exposures at the WTC site.To quote the summary: “Relates to granting sick leave for officers and employees of the state, a public authority or a municipal corporation…”Unfortunately, though, it still leaves many, many, others in limbo.
Who Analyzes the Shrinks?
The sentencing last week of Dr. Emily Dearden, formerly of the New York City Police Department, to a 3½-year sentence for shooting her husband up in Westchester raises many questions about, well, about many aspects of the NYPD.When foreign spies are uncovered in U.S. government jobs, a full-scale damage-assessment is undertaken.
Don’t Buy FDNY Hype
I’ve noticed with what I’m scared to call amusement the FDNY’s pursuit of new firefighter applicants.
FDNY Software Issues
I have to say I was amused by the report in Crains New York Oct. 27 that stated: “Fire Department ditches tech partner, tries to revamp dispatch system on its own” and that “A modernization project that has taken years will now take a few more.”I was at Health and Hospitals Corporation board meetings way back in the 1980s when a bunch of vendors put on high-powered displays promising that their “Hypercube” software would be the latest and greatest.
Private EMS 9/11 Heroes
As we approach the 15th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11, many groups will be holding memorials for those who died. One of the most poignant will be the FDNY’s commemoration of their—as they count them—343 members who were murdered that day. While they honor the two EMS division members who perished, namely Carlos Lillo and Ricardo Quinn, they ignore numerous other EMS workers who were dispatched by the FDNY operators and died at the scene.
Cops’ Act of Heroism
Last week, New Yorkers witnessed an amazing act of heroism by two of our Finest. Sgt. Hameed Armani and Officer Peter Cybulski were on duty in a police van at Times Square when a passerby threw a “device” into the vehicle.Thinking it might be a bomb, they didn’t jump out to safety. Instead they floored the accelerator and rushed the van away from the thousands of New Yorkers and visitors in the plaza.“We’re going to go, but we’re not going to have anybody else go with us,” Armani said.
An Old COBA Mystery
The June 8 arrest of Norman Seabrook, the president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, brings to mind some fascinating history of other individuals who’ve served in that role. After Stanley Israel died in 1999, his widow discovered $2 million in cash in their safe-deposit box. Somehow this information went public and raised the eyebrows of law-enforcement officials.
Make Him Ticket Placards
Last week an NYPD officer giving a motorist a ticket was caught on video claiming it was the Mayor’s fault and that he personally lived outside the city.Once the images were posted and the story got out, the officer (not yet officially identified) was suspended.Might I suggest an alternative course of action?
Letter: Police Academy ‘Skimping’

Letter: Save Money, Sacrifice Care
Last week you had an article on yet another report on NYC’s Emergency Medical Service, this time by the Citizens Budget Commission: “CBC: Substitute EMT For Paramedic For Ambulance Savings.” Once again, we’re treated to an outside group of finance experts who focus on just an isolated dollar figure without considering the human impact. kAmx? Letter: Update FDNY Equipment
While I’m not happy that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance chose to accept huge payments from financial institutions instead of pursuing jail sentences, at least he’s putting the money to good use. One of his bequeaths is already helping provide the NYPD with computer tablets in the radio cars and so-called “smart phones” for the officers, finally bringing the department into the modern era. kAm|:89E x DF886DE E92E 96 2=D@ FD6 9:D C6D@FC46D E@ FA52E6 E96 u:C6 s6A2CE>6?En x?
