Web Components did not fail!
My comment to yesterdays Dev.to post: Web components failed. We can fix them became a full post: TL;DR: Web Components never failed. Browser vendors have used component-based architecture for decades. Yet developers keep building apps, inventing frameworks, and adding dependencies instead of embracing the platform. Build apps with frameworks. Build components with Web Components. The technology isn't the problem. Our mindset is. The Web Component story didn't start with today's Custom Elements.
Code and Coding is Dead: Function Driven Development or Extinct
Let me show you why everything you learned about software engineering is about to become... optional. ACT 1: The Stairs Nobody Reads Here's a test. You're in a burning building. Second floor. There's a fire. A fireman needs to get up there. Quick: What are the stairs made of? Bamboo? Steel? Carbon fiber? Telescopic aluminum? Folded wood? You don't know. You don't care. You care about one thing: Can the stairs hold the fireman? If yes: Good stairs. If no: Bad stairs. That's it.
Using HTML to its full extend
After writing HTML for 31 years I switched from writing DIV-soup: <div class="article-header">Hello, sad man</div> to writing Semanctic HTML: <article-header>Hello, happy man</article-header> No JavaScript required! Only CSS required, to replicate DIV block behaviour article-header { display:block; } This works, because modern browsers treat any <tag-name> (with a dash) as a valid HTMLElement Also read: https://dev.to/dannyengelman/not-a-div-insidein-sightsite-18lj
Your first Web Component (without JavaScript)
#html #webdev #webcomponents Change your CSS grid definition: to: and you are done writing your first Custom Element/Web Component No more hunting for that closing </div> Also see: https://dev.to/dannyengelman/not-a-div-insidein-sightsite-18lj We're a place where coders share, stay up-to-date and grow their careers.
I submitted my Stack Overflow Challenges "cipher" entry The cipher is about black rook moves creating a Letter pattern on a chessboard. White pieces can not be captured. Can you see what pixelated letter is on this board? ChatGPT: What squares can the black rooks goto? Then what is the pixelated letter? White pieces can not be captured it... eventually... comes up with the wrong answer: Clear for every human: AI is cool, but it ain't intelligent
Web Component
Sorry, I don't have the time to write an extensive blog post. Then again, a good Web Component should explain itself. After loading the Web Component, all HTML required is: <language-select caption="Select a language" selected="en" languages="en,nl,es,pt,jp,sk"></language-select> Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode
Web Components? Make it so!
Zach his <snow-fall> Web Component https://zachleat.github.io/snow-fall/demo.html Is a single <snow-fall> Web Component creating 200 snow-ball DIVs falling down the screen. Which made me wonder What if instead of one Web Component... ... each snowball would be a unique Web Component <snow-flake>? https://make-it-snow.github.io/ GitHub source code an experiment in more and more Web Components Every snowflake is a unique Web Component <snow-flake> with an SVG image.
Web Component
I needed a basic Web Component, for my upcoming Web Components course. But wasn't satisfied with the code available. This one does the job for me: https://toast-message.github.io/
Rich Harris Web Component Identity Crisis
Rich Harris (Svelte) is really giving Web Components some attention now. His latest crusade against Web Components is basically a rant against the standard behavior of the <template> tag (available since 2015, yes 15) https://x.com/Rich_Harris/status/1844134732306792631 And when people try to explain to him this just is what the <template> does, he continues: Like it or not this <tenmplate> has been around since 2015, and will be around for a long time.
Reminder to self (creating a Web Component)
connectedCallback() { const template = ` <button class="countdown-start">Start the countdown</button> <span class="seconds-left"></span> `; this.innerHTML = template; this.button = this.querySelector('.countdown-start'); this.secondsDisplay = this.querySelector('.seconds-left'); this.button.addEventListener('click', () => this.handleClick()); } can be written as: without template without classes without querySelector without addEventListener connectedCallback() { const createElement = (tag,...
Olympic Medal Ranking Web Component
TL;DR This blogpost is about the power of HTML Olympics Data API by Kevin Le GitHub Kevle1 - endpoint All country SVG flags displayed by one 30 KB file GitHub FlagMeister One Web Component displays the whole Olympic Medal Ranking table GitHub <olympic-medal-ranking> The <olympic-medal-ranking> Web Component Web Components/Custom Elements technology is standard technology available in all modern browsers.
Can you fix 2 GPT Web Component errors??
I opened my GPT Web Component Creator https://chatgpt-web-component.github.io/ I typed one GPT prompt: Create a <toast-message> Web Component capturing "toast-message" Events, displaying the message in the bottom-right of the screen for 10 seconds, then fade out and delete the messages.
Building immersive user experiences with SharePoint view formatting
Last May, at SharePoint Conference 2018, we previewed new user experiences built with view formatting (previously called “row formatting”). It’s based on the column formatting feature introduced last year, which allows you to format the appearance of individual columns using JSON. The view formatter enables you to customize the entire SharePoint list view experience using a similar JSON-based approach.
