Melee Dance Studio Showcase – The Lawrentian
On Saturday, March 1, the Melee Dance Studio at Lawrence University held an enchanting showcase. For those uninformed, Melee is a studio chock-full of veteran dancers, passionate beginners and talented hobbyists. Their disparate specialties and interests result in dynamic shows that promote individual passions over any single, overarching theme. One dance may contain a large ensemble cast with costumes dancing to Bachata, while the next could be a duo performing their favorite K-pop routine.
Album review: “Dark Times” by Vince Staples – The Lawrentian
Vincent Jamal Staples, better known as Vince Staples, is a rapper, songwriter and actor from the north side of Long Beach, Calif. As a child, Staples found himself in many disparate situations. He moved from school to school but cited his time at Optimal Christian Academy as particularly formative. Staples also found himself involved in gang violence at a young age.
Album review: “Showbiz!” by MIKE – The Lawrentian
Michael Jordan Bonema, also known as MIKE, is one of the most important hip-hop artists in 2025. I say hip-hop artist because Bonema is not only a studied rapper, but also a talented producer and visionary. If you haven’t heard of MIKE, that is no fault of your own, for his discography has been largely overlooked within wider hip-hop culture. His niche is one of warm bit-crushed beats and confessional yet murky vignettes.
Look at the sky: Porter Robinson’s “Nurture” – The Lawrentian
In August 2014, Porter Robinson released his debut album “Worlds” to widespread acclaim. His spin on Synthpop and EDM raked in tens of millions of streams, and before long he shot into the music industry stratosphere. This success was bittersweet for Robinson. Fearing his creativity had reached a peak, he fell into a suffocating depression and creative burnout for two years.
NOIR - The Lawrentian
The living room was filled with bodies, chatter and heat. I sat in a cluster of people on a carpeted floor. As my legs cramped, I looked at my surroundings and grinned. Before the show had even started, Sankofa House had become a packed, electric venue. The halls, couches and doorways were all but filled with eager concert-goers. On stage, there were a few people toying with chords or setting up instruments. They all seemed equal parts excited and surprised by the number of people in the audience.
The Masterwork: an involved and emotional collaboration – The Lawrentian
When I think about classical music, I often find myself exploring the same tropes of thought: aging men with powdered wigs writing pieces for royalty, symphonies of talented music readers performing ancient melodies in front of the wealthy and white, and so on. While these thoughts are equal part social bias and objective history, there is way more to be said about classical music, especially newer classical.
“The record”: a good project that could’ve been great – The Lawrentian
Boygenius is an indie-folk singer-songwriter supergroup comprised of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. The trio released their first project, the self-titled EP “boygenius,” back in 2018, and since then, the landscape of indie-folk has changed drastically. While not solely responsible for this change, the group has informed the bulk of the biggest trends in indie-folk and made their individual names known to many.
