Calling Young Chattanooga Writers
A heads-up to Chattanooga folks: There's one week left for K-12 students in Hamilton County, including homeschool students, to have their work submitted for the Young Southern Student Writers Contest. The contest was established in 1999 and is presented by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in partnership with SoLit (formerly Southern Lit Alliance). Submissions are open until January 15, and details for entering can be found here.
“Statues in the Park”
Statues in the Park Toward the end of the day & wishing again for daylight. What’s discernible is evening’s impending gloom. If we’d admit it, this is a sad occasion: us perched at separate ends of a park bench; block-headed statues in the dark looming behind us holding so dearly to one another. This is what makes art. What art makes of us: models for statues battling stubbornness. We try to one-up the other without too much effort, since that would lessen the impact of the plan.
Whiteboys
I’m trying to remember who you are again. Some of you, anyway. We were living in Austin. I was a grad student at the University of Texas, and you were all a familiar face at Halcyon or Charley’s or Oilcan Harry’s or Rain or Elysium or Red Fez or Dive Bar or Crown and Anchor or Dog and Duck or Opal Divine’s or Raggedy Anne’s. I’d gone through a phase of hooking up with whiteboys even though I said I would never hookup with whiteboys. Pinkies, my best friend, Torrance, used to call them.
The hangups of center stage
As you are taking careful steps onto stage, the curtains open, revealing a bunch of curious faces. Then, all excitement fades, replaced with existential dread. At its worst, communication apprehension, commonly referred to as stage fright, is a fairly common affliction. The exact way it’s expressed varies between people, from shaking and stuttering to being completely unable to get in front of a crowd and speak. It is the wall that stops many people from reaching their full potential.
