11 Proven Ways to Get Kids to Eat More Vegetables | Brilliant Star
Photo by Peter Samuels View Photo Gallery Adults can be absurdly stubborn about eating their vegetables. But when it comes to picky eating, children take the cake. I don’t have children myself, but many people have asked me for tips to get their kids eating healthier. So for the past few months I’ve been reading the scientific literature and talking to parents around the world to uncover the secrets of getting kids to eat their greens. The good news is it is not impossible.
#18: Foodist Darya Rose Ph.D. chats with Chris about food and the science behind healthy lifestyles. They discuss how you can lose weight without giving up everything you love, what foods to eat more of, how to cook so food tastes better and plenty of hacks for everything along the way. Darya Rose (@summertomato) has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from UCSF and degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley.

Choose Your Words Carefully to Convince Family and Friends to Eat Healthier | Summer Tomato
by Darya Rose | May 29, 2013 Sometimes your own motivation isn’t what stops you from eating healthy, but rather the nags and complaints from the people that expect you to feed them dinner. Healthy eating is rarely a popular idea, and it’s easy to understand why. What we’ve been told is healthy are boring, steamed, overcooked vegetables and food with no fat, salt or flavor.
For The Love Of Food
by Darya Rose | Jun 25, 2010 Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup. Outstanding reading to be found this week on the interwebs; tough cuts were made. Please read the landmark essay about why the gulf oil spill may be the last we know of bluefin tuna. You should also read about what is going down over California’s strawberry crop. The good news?
Foodist Approved: Toasted Turmeric Pumpkin Seeds
by Darya Rose | Oct 29, 2014 Boo! It’s finally time to carve that giant pumpkin that’s been hanging out on your front steps for the last couple of weeks. I know I’ve been anxiously awaiting this moment, not because I can’t wait to carve a scary face (my carving skills are seriously lackluster), but because I can’t wait to get my hands on those slimy seeds. The best part about carving pumpkins has gotta be the seeds.
Goals are for Losers: The Life-Changing Advice No One Tells You
by Darya Rose | Oct 22, 2014 When I was a dieter I always had a goal. Many goals. “I want to weigh 120 pounds.” “I want to be a size 2.” “I want to eat fewer than 50 grams of carbs every day.” I thought if I achieved these goals I would be happy. But the truth was that as long as I had these goals, I was frustrated. I consider myself lucky that as a female I never confused my weight loss struggles with my self-worth.
Why It's Worth It to Keep Trying Foods You Don't Like
Sardine on a stick in Kyoto When I was kid (you know, before my relationship with food was completely warped by my mother’s dieting habit), I was actually pretty normal. I loved ice cream, grilled cheese sandwiches, and the strawberries I picked with my grandma. I shamelessly copied the food preferences of my fellow classmates, and rejected things like onions and tuna fish for fear of looking uncool. And of course, there were many foods I absolutely hated.

The Heartbreaking Story of the Joyless Splurge
by Darya Rose | Oct 6, 2014 Back in the early 90s I was offered a choice. Actually that isn’t quite right, because at the time it didn’t feel like a choice. At an age when I was way too young to be thinking about these things there seemed to be two paths I could follow. One promised beauty, confidence and happiness. The other seemed boring, average and all around disappointing. Without hesitating, I swallowed the blue pill. From the outside the dieting path seemed so glamorous.

Is Organic Food Really The Same As Conventional?
by Darya Rose | Sep 5, 2012 On Monday a study from scientists at Stanford made headlines by concluding that there isn’t much health value in choosing organic food over conventional food. The headline didn’t surprise me in the least, I’ve seen similar ones at least a dozen times before, but there is still so much confusion among the general public around this topic that it’s worth revisiting in the wake of this new data. Despite what organic zealots are telling you, this wasn’t a bad study.
BIG NEWS: Summer Tomato is Leaving San Francisco
by Darya Rose | Jun 11, 2015 After 18 years (say what?!) in the Bay Area and 12 in SF proper (don’t call it San Fran), I’m packing up and moving shop. In a couple of weeks Kevin, Toaster and I are relocating to New York City to start the next exciting chapter of our lives. As you can imagine we’re super excited, and also a little sad. It’s hard to think of calling anyplace other than San Francisco home.

Wisdom Wednesday: Flakes Don't Grow on Trees
by Darya Rose | Jan 7, 2015 When I first took my “leap of science” to stop dieting and start eating Real Food, carbs were the scariest thing. I hadn’t eaten anything resembling a grain in years and didn’t know where to start. So like any good American consumer I went to the cereal aisle and chose what looked like the “healthiest” cereal. It was a brown flake cereal with lots of fiber and omega-3s. It had the word “Nature” in the brand too. I felt super virtuous.

Do You Secretly Hate Your Workout Classes?
by Darya Rose | Apr 13, 2015 Photo by Nottingham Trent University Recently a good friend told me she was struggling to maintain her workout habit. She could force herself to go to a class every now and then, but it wasn’t enough to keep her in the shape she prefers. She was relying on willpower to get herself to go and it wasn’t working. “In order to build any habit it has to be rewarding,” I explained.

How I Learned to Cook Without Recipes
by Darya Rose | Apr 29, 2015 Going away to college was a huge shock for me. I was so neurotic about food at the time that I refused to live in the dorms and pay for the required school meal plan. So I got an apartment with some friends and attempted to feed myself for the first time in my life. Oh boy. For the first few months I ate out every meal. In Berkeley this was fun since there’s so much great food, but the novelty eventually wore off.
Foodist Approved: 4-Ingredient Silky Butternut Soup
by Darya Rose | Dec 31, 2014 I’ve got a feeling that 2015 is going to be a good year for you. Why? Because you’re finally going to learn to cook—and cook well. So well that eating out just won’t impress you much anymore. Once you start donning that apron, you’ll find yourself thinking, “I could have made this better myself.” This realization is kind of a bummer every time you eat out, but it’s definitely good for the wallet and waistline.
The Best (and most surprising) Way to Quench Cravings
You probably know by now that I’m not the biggest fan of willpower. It’s weak. It’s fallible. And it often backfires when we need it most. If you were dating willpower I’d tell you to dump the jerk immediately. Seriously, you can do better. The reason I’m so hard on willpower is because the vast majority of the people I talk to still believe it is the solution to their health and weight struggles, and it’s not. For long-term goals, willpower is far too unreliable to carry you through.

Gone Bananas? Why I Don't Eat America's Favorite Fruit
by Darya Rose | Aug 15, 2012 No, I don’t eat bananas. Not really anyway. It’s not that I don’t like the taste, I actually really enjoy them (particularly with ice cream). Nor do I actively avoid bananas—I’d eat homemade banana cream pie any day of the week, and in Thailand I noshed on the small red finger bananas sold at the local markets. But I don’t buy bananas in the US, and given a choice I’d almost always opt for something else.
Sugar's Sweet Spot: How to Eat Less Without Saying No
by Darya Rose | Sep 24, 2014 Recently I explained how restrictive dieting makes losing weight harder than it needs to be, not easier. But one reader wondered how my advice about limiting sugar and processed foods jives with this concept: You say that mainstream diets encourage nutritionism and cut out groups of food like fat, gluten and sugar. However, much of what you discuss also encourages limiting sugar. How do you differentiate the two? Am I hypocrite or trying to pull a fast one?

Everything You Need to Know About Healthy Eating in 115 Minutes
by Darya Rose | Jan 12, 2016 Those who know me know that I’m a basketball girl, not a football girl. Maybe that’s why at a Super Bowl XLI party in 2007 I found myself enthralled by a New York Times Magazine article instead of watching the game. As my friends ate chili and drank beers I devoured Michael Pollan’s landmark essay “Unhappy Meals.” I don’t remember who won the game, but after that day I never looked at food or nutrition the same.

Why Iam Voting Yes on Prop 37: Label Genetically Modified Foods
To be honest, I’m a little surprised I even need to write this. In a national survey, over 90% of American voters favored labeling genetically modified (GMO) foods. Labels for GMOs are already required in the European Union, Japan, Australia, and dozens of other nations. In direct expenses, adding a label costs next to nothing for both companies and consumers.

It's A Texture Thing: How To Get Over Slimy, Spongy And Other Unfamiliar Food Textures
by Darya Rose | Mar 13, 2013 Taste is the sensation we usually associate with food, but picky eaters can be just as fixated on texture as flavor. Ask someone who doesn’t like mushrooms or eggplant what turns them off and they are just as likely (if not more likely) to say the food is “slimy” or “mushy” as they are to complain about the taste. Of course texture is important.

Juicing: Stupid and Pretentious or Nourishing and Enlightening?
by Darya Rose | Jan 22, 2014 I typically don’t like to get involved in religious debates, but I find the current green juice frenzy way too amusing to resist throwing in my own $0.02.
