Build a Zero-Waste Homestead
Permaculture’s principles are simple: take care of the earth, and the earth will take care of you. Practical Permaculture (Timber Press, 2015) by Jessi Bloom and Dave Boehnlein covers the basic principles of permaculture design and offers detailed information on wastewater recycling, composting, renewable energy systems, and much more.
Build a Zero-Waste Homestead – Mother Earth News
Permaculture methods, such as greywater recycling, can guide a zero-waste homestead — and improve your landscape in the process. The following excerpt from “Waste: Plugging Leaks in the System,” discusses how to design permaculture systems to recycle human waste, food and yard scraps, wastewater, and how to capture usable heat released from biodigestion. You can purchase this book from the MOTHER EARTH NEWS store: Practical Permaculture.
Planning on growing a hedge/living fence
posted 12 years ago Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: So I was thinking of inter-planting Osage orange, red cedar, and honey locust as the primary trees, then maybe adding some apples, mulberries, pears, etc into the mix. The osage, cedar, and honey locusts are pretty insect resistant, and may even repel insects from other nearby plants.
Guerrilla Gardening With Fruit Trees
posted 13 years ago 3 Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: I'm obsessed with fruit. I get most of my calories from the stuff, and it makes me feel great. What I want to do is start planting some fruit trees around my city, albeit on the sly, cause I know that the city would not be pleased. It makes me sad that there are starving people in the city but no one thinks to build up a stock of fruit trees that can deliver hundreds of thousands of calories to them at no cost.
dirt bag structures
posted 13 years ago 2 Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: Go to the website of the man who has done more for earthbag construction than anyone, Nader Khalili. See his site at http://www.calearth.org/ His initial idea was for survival domes that could be erected in a day or two with simple materials: a shovel, a stack of sandbags, and a roll of barbed wire. Here's how they're built: Using a string and a stick and some lime or something, mark a 10- or 12-ft circle on flat ground.
How do I fix a leaking pond?
posted 15 years ago Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: I bought some property with a dry pond. We had a good rain and it filled up but two days later it was dry again. I had heard about using pigs to seal the pond. Has anyone tried this and if so did it work? Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks posted 15 years ago Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: There's something about the shape of a pig's hoof that makes such a great pond seal.
what is permaculture?
posted 16 years ago 6 Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: 10,000 years ago, people learned to plant their favorite foods close by so they wouldn't have to go far away and find them. Only these plants always seemed to need care while the stuff in the wild didn't. Permaculture is (IMOO) about understanding why and attempting to work more symbiotically with nature so that these plants can be healthier and more productive with less water, fertilizer and effort.
