Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Unpaid editor of my high school's sports section. My first paid job was writing for OddsShark.com in 2009.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, my mother had an old-fashioned typewriter that I used to write on when I was young. I still remember the clicking sounds fondly!

How is social media changing news?

Access to information is at an all-time high, but that's true for false information as well. We need to put an emphasis on verifying sources.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I'm Ron Burgundy?

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To a good journalist, details matter. It's all about telling the story well and getting the story right.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

With as much detail as possible, so that I can make sure that I'm on the same page with my client from the start.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter was when verified accounts were reliable, but now none are great for news. YouTube for entertainment.

Who do you wish followed you?

Anyone who might enjoy my content!

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always enjoyed writing and speaking on topics that I am knowledgeable about. Having the chance to do so professionally is rewarding!

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was the editor of the sports section during my junior and senior year of high school.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My story about Amazon retail arbitrage for ThreeColts.com. I got to talk in-depth about my own experience to help teach others.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Always be improving! From doing extra research to learning new SEO techniques, you can always learn new ways to get better at your craft.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime! My email is always open.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Anything covering Phil Hellmuth during my time at Poker.org was fun as he always interacted with the pieces I posted on Twitter.

What's your favorite drink?

While I'm usually drinking water, my go-to favorite is Diet Coke!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

If my phone also doesn't count, I'm probably out on a walk or reading a book!

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That anyone can do it. There is a big difference between being a sports fan and a sports writer!
