An open letter to new Gopher coach Bob Motzko
As most readers likely know, way back in a day, I was a Gopher hockey captain. I am proud of that. I love many of my alumni brothers. For the program, I share the following thoughts today. I have most often seen myself as a leader. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have written for Let’s Play Hockey all these years. I must, however, be transparent here. I lost interest in Gopher hockey some time ago. The program veered on to a course that simply interests me less.
Candidates announced for 2018 Reed Larson Award
In hockey, forwards and goaltenders tend to get the most attention with their gaudy offensive numbers and highlight-reel saves, respectively. Meanwhile, on the blue line are those who play tough defense, guard the front of the net and start the offensive rush up the ice. Let’s Play Hockey is proud to announce the 20 candidates for the 2018 Reed Larson Award, an annual award presented to the state’s top senior boys’ high school defenseman.
Black Biscuit High School Players of the Week
Garrett Worth has a knack for the net. The senior forward scored seven goals in two games this past week, five of them coming in a 10-3 win over Roseau Jan. 20. He now has 29 goals on the year. On Tuesday he lit the lamp twice more and also had three helpers to lead the Greyhounds to another win. Duluth East is now 13-1-3 on the season. Steinberg scored six goals in a 8-2 win over Rochester John Marshall giving her 16 goals on the season. Mankato East is now 10-10 on the year.
Catching up with Mr. Hockey: Grant Besse
It’s been almost six years since former Benilde-St. Margaret’s star forward Grant Besse lit up the Xcel Energy Center in the boys’ state high school hockey tournament. “I mean, it was pretty cool, “Besse said by phone. “But I don’t really talk about it too much.” He scored a record five goals in the Class AA championship game in 2012, including three shorthanded goals in the Red Knights’ 5-1 win over Hill-Murray to capture the state title.
The Great Outdoors
The winter sun rises to welcome the day, The pond’s finally frozen and ready for play. — From “Ben and Lucy Play Pond Hockey” by Andrew Sherburne It’s that time of year again in the Upper Midwest. The lakes and ponds are frozen solid. The neighborhood parks have flooded their rinks. The warming houses are open. The sounds of pucks hitting wood boards and chain-link goals fill the air. It’s time for hockey in the great outdoors. Hockey players in Minnesota really don’t know how lucky they have it.
