What was your first job as a journalist?
My self-published and written underground newspaper in high school.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Learned to type on an old mechanical Underwood. Then, the IBM Selectric came out and I discovered how poor my typing skills really were!
How is social media changing news?
For the worse.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To write about interesting things in a way that makes other people interested, too.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Too busy to spend much time on goofy crap like that.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email; or, in person, if you can catch me.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
PCs, Macs, The Internet, my brain and Spell Check.

My family members.
Why did you become a journalist?
I asked the editor of our local newspaper why we didn't have a column on computers and the Internet. He recruited me to write one :)
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I wrote, published and edited my own underground newspaper in high school, and was suspended twice for distributing it on school property.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A three-part series I did in 2020 about scams and identity theft.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
If you really have talent, people will see it, even if it takes a while.

Any time.

Do a story about TikTok. OMG, I could care less!
What's your favorite drink?

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Working on some sort of outdoor activity: helping my GF in her garden, building a shed, fishing, enjoying a picnic in the shade.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Wired Magazine.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That computers are anything but stupid.
