Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a general assignment reporter at a free daily in Boulder, Colo. targeted at 18-25s. Got to write all kinds of wacky stuff.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Sure. I typed assignments for school on an electric typewriter.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Fletch, but I'm also glad he's fictional.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Short email is best. I'm pretty aggressive about clearing out my inbox. No answer means no chance at least 95 percent of the time.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No -- my high school was too small for a newspaper. I acted in school plays.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read media blogs (and take what they say with a grain of salt). Teach yourself things constantly. Be generous.
