Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Space.com, where the editors almost immediately launched me to Cape Canaveral and Houston to cover NASA's space shuttle program.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My grandfather's Underwood is within 10 feet of me. But that wasn't the one with which I typed out emo song lyrics in high school.

How is social media changing news?

Social media is faster and livelier, but wrong more often than traditional news. Old-school reporting is more important now than ever before.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent. Ok, so what if he violated conflict-of-interest ethics—he kicked a lot of evildoers' asses. Where's that line on your resume?

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To doggedly pursue the truth, highlight the good and the bad in this world, and tell a damn good story.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By email with the exact phrase "exclusive story pitch" in the subject line. And by exclusive I mean nobody else but me has seen the pitch.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I try to give every service a first date, but I don't always call back. Google's tools are the main arrows in my quiver, but Pocket rules.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. A never-ending fountain of news, laughs, and frustrating demagogues.

Who do you wish followed you?

Carl Sagan. I think he'd have billions and billions and billions of great tweets in him. (Yes, I know he never said that on TV.)

Why did you become a journalist?

I'm too nosy and eclectic to do anything else without being fired.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Any story where I bring new information to light. One new fact, as a friend of mine has said, is better than 100,000 of the hottest takes.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Constantly maintain a digital rolodex for your sources with keywords for their areas of expertise. And keep it secret. Keep it safe.

What's your favorite drink?

Water. It keeps me alive.
