Your Drift Dashboard Can Be Green While Your Model Is Failing
A drift alert is a question, not a verdict. Here is how to build the monitor, and how to tell which alerts actually mean your model is getting worse. Most teams meet drift monitoring the same way. The dashboard lights up red in its first week. Two features have "drifted". Someone spends a day digging, nothing gets retrained, and when the labels finally arrive, accuracy has not moved at all. The opposite failure is quieter and costs more.
Correlation Is Not Enough: Selecting Features Without Throwing Away Predictive Information
Dropping every feature whose correlation with the target is below 0.1 feels like hygiene. It is often the opposite: you are deleting signal your model could have used, and you will never see it in your metrics because the comparison you would need is the one you never ran. Most of us learned feature selection from a heatmap. Compute Pearson's r between each column and the target, sort, keep the top k, move on. It is fast, explainable to a stakeholder in one slide, and wrong often enough to matter.
The Case for Context-Aware Model Evaluation
Every model review I have sat in eventually arrives at the same slide: one big number in a large font. Accuracy 92%. F1 0.88. AUC 0.91. Heads nod. Someone asks about latency—the model ships. The problem is not that the number is wrong. The problem is that it answers a question nobody actually asked.
Feature Engineering Techniques That Actually Improve Model Accuracy
Most gains in a supervised learning project don't come from switching algorithms; they come from what you feed the algorithm. Feature engineering is the process of transforming raw data into representations that make patterns easier for a model to learn. Done well, it routinely closes more of the accuracy gap than hyperparameter tuning or trying a fancier model.
Testing LLM Bias Across Embeddings, Prompts, and Generated Text
Ask a language model to write a short story about a nurse and a CEO, and watch which pronouns it picks. Odds are, you can predict them. That tiny habit is bias in action, and it scales to every résumé summary, support reply, and generated report your product produces. Bias is not one bug in one place. It shows up at three layers: the embeddings that represent meaning, the prompts that steer behavior, and the generated text users actually read. Each layer needs its own test.
The Embedding Model You Choose Matters More Than Your LLM
The Uncomfortable Truth You’ve spent days prompt-engineering your LLM. You’ve benchmarked Claude against GPT. You’ve debated whether to use Mixtral. But your RAG pipeline is still returning garbage answers, and you’re blaming the wrong component. The LLM is only as good as the context it receives. Context quality is entirely determined by retrieval. Retrieval quality is entirely determined by your embedding model. Fix the bottom, and the top fixes itself.
Using LLMs to Automate Data Cleaning and Transformation Pipelines
A new paradigm, not a replacement of data engineering, but a fundamental shift in where engineering effort concentrates. If you were to ask a data engineer about their week, I am sure they would not speak about anything exciting. Most of their time is spent on data wrangling, messy upstream data, inconsistent date formats, null values that are not really null, and vendor exports that rename columns without noting those changes in the documentation.
The Vector Database Lie
The Setup: The Hype Machine It’s vector database season. Conferences are full of RAG pipeline talks. Pinecone raised over $100 million; Milvus, Weaviate, and Qdrant are all well-funded and competing to disrupt how we store and search embeddings. Let’s be blunt: The vector databases are poorly implemented, and most of the companies implementing them are doing so to solve a problem that doesn’t exist.
