City riding
I think everyone should go back and take another look at Ernesto's video, 'crashing without style'. 'E', you should've sued the idiot ped, (don't walk red light), who caused your concussion and dislocated knee after you putting down your bike to sacrifice yourself in order to save the idiot peds' arse! If you weren't half out from being concussed you should have chased him down . . . GEEZ! . . .
Riding Songs... Chime in!
Of course, it's a speaker or only in one ear. Let's not devolve into a debate on how we listen to tunes, k? Ok, that said. I have a "cadence mix" I used to use when I did training rides. What music makes you happy when you ride? I'll throw a few out there - I like listening to ELO e.g. "Turn to Stone", "Livin' Thing", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Mr. Blue Sky" Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 175 ▶ Reply to This

Shoaaaaaling
The video the GoPro recorded this evening after work - riding north on Dearborn... the amount of unisex shoaling was so overwhelming... I actually yelled out on Dearborn and Whacker - SHOALERS! Almost every intersection had women and men and Divvy shoalers. Unisex. Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 921 ▶ Reply to This
How rusty if your chain?
The chain on the pink machine is so rusty... This is a-new-chain by "new chain" standards. Got it from LBS back in December as I was putting this build together. SRAM single speed chain to be exact. I've only cleaned it once before - a couple of weeks ago. Took chain off and submitted it to a sonic cleaner bath. Was so nice and warm and clean - then I lubed it... and just this week, back at it again.

Moving, Job Hunting - How Much Is Bike Riding a Factor In Your Choices?
I moved today from D.C. to Bethesda. Shorter commute to work (still bike/metro), quieter (my DC neighborhood was a little too heavy on the party, and I’m saving $$$. Before settling on a location, I wanted to make sure I’d still ride every day and live in a place that doesn’t require a car to enjoy restaurants, grocery shop, and get around. As I’m resting after a long day’s move, I was wondering how many of you consider your bike and rideability into where you live?

North Branch/North Shore Channel trail questions
as a new resident of lincoln square, i've been utilizing the North Branch/North shore Channel trail to commute up to my job in Evanston and had 2 questions. i've tried utilizing my google machine skills and searching this forum looking for answers, but have come up empty. 1. there's a big construction site at foster and the north shore channel that requires a detour and means the foster bridge underpass can't be accessed. does anyone know what the construction is for and when it might wrap up? 2.

How far you've ridden in 2018
3802 miles (3623 outdoor, 179 indoor) for 2018. More importantly (for me): 365 consecutive days of outdoor cycling in 2018, biking every single day of the year, and every day outside at that! This month, I started spinning regularly (much harder than my commuting miles) and added some indoor miles for the first time all year.
How far you've ridden in 2018
a big fat zero. at this rate, that will be my total for this year, too! Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 2241 ▶ Reply to This
Elston Protected Bike Lane--Zero Maintenance Zone
Are they any other regular users of the newish Elston protected bike lanes...north of Milwaukee ave? I've been a bit deflated (pun intended) by the amount of debris and glass, and general total absence of maintenance to the Elston bike lanes. Before the bike lanes, that roadway benefitted from very regular street sweeping. Now, the bike lanes have been sectioned off, and are a bit of a glassy mess. Does anyone who reads this blog have a relationship with city officials responsible for maintenance?
Angry City.
Where to begin with this? i don't know where you ride, but i find your take on drivers' courtesy rather elitist and classist, verging on racist. Have you cycled in a "third world " country? i do a lot of cycling through some pretty well-to-do neighbourhoods, and also some pretty hardscrabble towns and rural areas, and i have no way of knowing how "educated" or "acculturated" any given driver may be.
Angry City.
When I lived in Wisconsin, you had the polite people and the jerks (bottle throwing, swerving, no room on rural roads, getting yelled at). When I lived in Highland Park, same (no bottle throwing, just assholes) - the kind people and the jerks - and that's when I also encountered the jerk groups of cyclists on weekend mornings. Moving to Chicago - same thing. Kind drivers who follow the rules, and jerk drivers who don't care about others. Which group of immigrants are you referring to?

I ask myself all the time why I continue to ride in this city. Everyone is so angry and only worried about themselves. It’s all about me before you. Why do we continue to ride when there is so much hatred/anger/obviluousness to human life as cyclists and pedestrians? Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 717 ▶ Reply to This

Sadly he is no longer in a "spot of bother."
Paul Sherwen, a broadcaster who cycling fans have been listening to for years has passed away. In typical British understatement he would describe a racer who was feeling the effects of a climb as being in a "spot of bother." It will be hard to imagine grand tours without he and Phil Liggett having a conversation and letting the rest of us in on it while the racers swept through scenic vistas. https://www.npr.org/2018/12/03/672806336/paul-sherwen-renowned-cycl...
Winter Riding: Hat Head, the Mess is Real :-/
Super windy (24 mph), nasty cold morning and so I wore my non-bikewear fleece cap which felt awful under my helmet and produced an embarrassing hair mess. I bundled up today but it felt all wrong. My new coat didn't give me enough flex in my arms, jeans are always a bad choice, and the wind made it all feel awkward and awful. But I made it in and learned enough that tomorrow I will be dressing in normal clothing that rides better and is more comfortable.

New Lakefront Path Pavement- Northside
So with all of the new pavement on the northside, I'm questioning on why they did not stripe all of the new pavement prior to this rapid cool down with our weather. Does anyone know what is going on because it is quite the clusterf and someone will seriously get hurt soon out there because it seems that no one knows what to do. Tags: ▶ Reply to This
judicial retention vote
I am very conflicted. I agree that society needs to take cyclists seriously and that when cyclists are injured or killed on the road that those responsible need to be held accountable. I am baffled by the seemingly light dispositions in the criminal cases that have been discussed on this forum. That being said I have issues with judges being scapegoated and I have a continuing strong opinion that civil rather criminal remedies are the only ones that really matter.
Struggling former city biker, now suburban mom.
Are there any parents here who live in the burbs and still sort of ride like you did in the city before you had kids? I’m struggling... I’m on the North Shore and although we Ride close to our house, I’m struggling so much with the timing, setup and my work and daughters schedule. It’s faster in most situations to drive which is super different too.

Ok, how about this for starters.
