My Two Border Towns Book Review
age 4+ Beautiful, timely tale of life and hope along the border. Parents need to know that My Two Border Towns, written by David Bowles (They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid's Poems) and beautifully illustrated by Erika Meza, is the loving story of a father and son's weekend ritual that includes traveling "al Otro Lado," or to the other side of the border from Texas into Mexico.
A New Defiant Writing Project
As a queer writer and a lifelong fan of LGBTQ romance, my answer to the fascist push in the US to ban queer books and erase trans people is simple: I’m going to write more queer stories. More joy. More love. More unapologetic representation. Along the way, I’m going to celebrate Mexican Americans, especially our Indigenous roots.
Fall of the Fireflies (Seasons of Sisterhood #1)
Set in the world of García McCall’s Summer of the Mariposas, this mesmerizing novel follows 15-year-old Mexican American twins Velia and Delia as they determine to save their father’s soul from supernatural beings. Though Velia and Delia have always been close, the siblings find themselves at odds as they get older, as when Delia coaxes Velia into agreeing to go on tour with their recently returned musician father, who abandoned them years ago to make it big with his Tejano band.
9 Misconceptions about the “Aztecs”
The more I write historical fiction and queer historical romance set in Anahuac (present-day Central Mexico) during the 1400s, the more I think about the misconceptions about the Nahuas (in the “Aztec Empire” and surrounding nations) that have been embraced by the general public. I encounter these distorsions often.
The Government must reconsider its downgrade of poultry transport legislation
I will acknowledge that previous measures were not enforced or widely understood. There was great confusion in the industry on what was actually permitted but instead of seeing this as an opportunity to improve, the Government has legitimised a method which we know is worse for bird welfare. For some time, the RSPCA welfare standards have stated that catching poultry in an upright position is our preferred method and we have advised against double leg catching.
‘Latinx’ is a defiant act of world-building
Over the past decade, the gender-neutral term “Latinx” has come to be a tool of division. White Christian conservatives have sown discord over it, warning that “non-Hispanic” socialist intellectuals in the U.S. had invented the term — which, they argued, colonizes the Spanish language in an ironic act of cultural appropriation— to undercut the traditional values of the “Hispanic” community and promote a progressive “leftist” ideology.
Games platforms can be cyber risk – Proctor
There is a reason language appropriate to biology is used in cybersecurity: virus, infection, worm, vector. Like a cold picked up at daycare, computer viruses spread easily through families. Unlike a runny nose, the consequences can be dire. Children are favourite targets for cyber criminals. They click on anything and can be easily enticed into downloading add-ons for their favourite games.
Small banks have been cheque-ing out – Proctor
As discussed in previous articles, the Australian financial system is moving away from cheques. Several financial institutions will no longer accept or issue them, which is a problem for law firms attempting to navigate transactions in which payment by cheque is still possible. The table below lists the institutions which will no longer accept cheques and those which have announced pending changes.
The Matron: A New Horror Icon
David Bowles · Follow 6 min read · -- A cutting miniseries for our times—at the intersection of socially conscious drama, folk horror, and slasher aesthetics—the first issues of The Matron will be available months earlier than the marketplace for those who pre-order graphic novel Volume I through our Kickstarter campaign, which also offers swag and multiple perks like getting yourself drawn into the comic as a background character or victim of the titular ax-wielder.
Buyer beware with funds transfer fraud – Proctor
Given that Australians have lost hundreds of millions of dollars to funds transfer fraud in the past decade and a half, there is a surprising lack of authority indicating how courts apportion responsibilities and losses between funds Transferee and Transferor.

First they came for the bankers – Proctor
The majority of funds transfer scams no longer rely upon breaching the IT systems of a bank, retailer or law firm but are approaches directly to the client. There are an endless number of variations, but the three basic forms are: Ring the customer and impersonate the institution, often with an “urgent warning” that an account is compromised and funds need to be moved elsewhere.
Industry Voice: Decline, recovery, and transformation: travel insurance post-pandemic
At the time of writing, four and a half years on from the pandemic’s arrival, it looks like travel is back. Airports and planes are full, holidays are in full swing – but it wasn’t long ago that Covid-19 hit the global travel industry with an unprecedented blow, bringing much of it to a halt.
Money-laundering panic disingenuous – Proctor
This month sees a conga line of familiar faces claiming that Australia will become a haven for international criminals unless AUSTRAC is given vast new powers to palm their financial investigation obligations off onto suburban law firms.
THE HERO TWINS AND THE MAGIC OF SONG
Readers can still rely on this series to bring laughs. When Great Aunt Reba dies, she leaves some money to the family. Greg’s mom calls a family meeting to determine what to do with their share, proposing home improvements and then overruling the family’s cartoonish wish lists and instead pushing for an addition to the kitchen.
Industry Voice: Is the world moving again?
Until March 2020, movement was normal: the world had become used to over half a century of broadly continuous rises in global mobility, fuelled by growing international trade, cheaper and more plentiful flights, and the rising aspirations of the planet’s ever-growing population.
Hackers have new weapon – Proctor
Some of the most effective cyber-criminals are not expert computer hackers but “human hackers” – people who are expert at manipulating others to gain access to information or financial systems. They now have a new weapon in their armoury: deep-fake synthetic voice and video that enables them to imitate clients or colleagues. Australian law firms have been successfully targeted and overseas businesses have been taken for millions.
Cyber attacks on rise via fake emails – Proctor
There has been a significant recent increase in the number of clients who have received fake emails “confirming” bank account details in conveyancing. Sadly, far too many of these incidents end in the loss of the client’s life savings. In the majority of cases, the firm’s systems have not been compromised and the email was from a free email account set up to approximate the firm’s.
Letter to Region One Superintendents Concerning Book Banning Efforts in Region One Schools
I emailed the following letter to all superintendents in the Region One educational service zone of South Texas on June 3, 2024. Good morning, superintendents: While several of you already know me, let me introduce myself. I'm Dr. David Bowles, Coordinator of English Education at UTRGV. Teachers from the Valley who have been certified in the last eight years have been under my supervision and guidance during their studies.
A Chalcan Lordsong
By David Bowles The eighth cuicatl in Songs of the Lords of Anahuac, my English translation of the codex Romances de los señores de la Nueva España. This piece is noted as being both "chalcayotl"¹ and a "tlahtohcacuicatl."² The Chalcan king³ has come to fight, spears move as one - chalk and feathers.⁴ Beside the House of Holy Writ,⁵ there for a time they remain, in the home of our god.
The King of Tetzcoco Remembers
The fifth cuicatl in Songs of the Lords of Anahuac, my English translation of the codex Romances de los señores de la Nueva España. By Cacamatzin, the last king of Tetzcoco, when he found himself in dire straits, remembering the power and great majesty of his country and his grandfather.¹ Friends, listen to them for a moment: "If only no one went marching off to war like some ancient lord. If only anger and quarreling would be forgotten, erased from the face of this good earth!"
Songs of the Lords of Anahuac
The codex called Romances de los señores de la Nueva España, usually translated Ballads of the Lords of New Spain, consists of forty-two folios on which thirty-six cuicatl-songs or ballads-were compiled in Nahuatl somewhere around 1582. This date is attested in the Relación of Juan Bautista de Pomar, which was attached to the collection. This collection of cuicatl is one of only two surviving codices that preserve Nahua poetry; the longer codex is known as Cantares Mexicanos ( Songs of Mexico).
"Nonantzin" Poem NOT by Nezahualcoyotl
By David Bowles As yesterday was Mother's Day in Mexico, a popular poem supposedly written by Nezahualcoyotl made its rounds through social media. Even Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History have been promoting the piece. Tsk, tsk. Readers, you may also have seen it and thought it a beautiful sentiment. And it is!
The Hero Twins and the Magic of Song
By David Bowles Illustrated by Charlene Bowles Paperback: forthcoming Ebook Available 10.29.2024 In this graphic novel retelling of an Indigenous Mexican tale, demigod twins must use their magic of song to rescue their father and uncle from the perilous Land of the Dead. A supreme middle-grade adventure! In the age when Maya demigods lived among us, two carefree brothers, One Hunahpu and Seven Hunahpu, are foolishly lured to Xibalba, the Land of the Dead, to play a game.
Duty of confidence not absolute – Proctor
Confidentiality is hard wired into legal professionals and that trust is rarely broken. However, the duty of confidence is not absolute and in rare cases we are entitled to report a client’s state of mind if we think they are a significant risk to self or others. Two areas where a solicitor may disclose confidential information are to prevent:1 immediate risk of serious physical harm to the client or others; or the likely commission of a serious criminal offence.
Aztecs and the Solar Eclipse
As we’re just days from another “Great American Eclipse,” whose duration of totality will be nearly five minutes, I wanted to take a moment to share what that unexpected darkness implied for Indigenous people of Mesoamerica before the Spanish Invasion. The Nahua peoples of the Triple Alliance (“Aztec Empire”) referred to the solar eclipse as “icualoca in tonatiuh” — “the sun’s devouring”—or “in cualo tonatiuh” (literally “when the sun is eaten”).
Ancient Night by David Alvarez, David Bowles | Review | Spirituality & Practice
This book began with acclaimed illustrator David Alvarez taking two characters from classic Mesoamerican lore — a rabbit associated with the moon and a silly opossum who bravely delivers the sun's fire to humans — and weaving their stories together in a new and timeless myth. Mexican American author and translator David Bowles wrote poetic lines to accompany the illustrations and story.

Pet theft should be treated like a stolen phone
Dog mums and puppies are still forced to travel long distances and as we hear about over and over again, sold to unsuspecting members of the public who often have to deal with sick puppies and dogs with behavioural issues. The Kept Animals Bill was set to tackle this, by increasing the age of imported puppies to six months, giving greater protection around the import of pregnant dogs and reducing the number of dogs an individual or vehicle could bring into the UK.
Our Departed on the Day of the Dead
Without getting into just how much Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead in Mexico is Indigenous or syncretic, I wanted to share some basic (mostly linguistic) information about similarly-named holidays among the Mexica ("Aztecs") and other Nahuas before the Spanish invasion.
The Major Aztec Gods, Part II
Here's the second of several planned articles on the origins of the names of major Aztec gods. By Aztec, I mean the three major Nahua groups that formed the Triple Alliance of Anahuac: the Mexica, the Acolhua, and the Tepaneca. Their state religion (centered on the sacred plaza of Tenochtitlan) brought together gods from all over Mesoamerica into a synthetic pantheon, obscuring the origins of some.
Nahua Duality and "Ometeotl"
It's become popular to deny that the Dual God Ometeotl was ever a thing. Many folks argue that scholar Miguel León-Portilla invented the deity to support what he wanted to believe about Aztec religion. And I agree that Dr. León-Portilla was absolutely wrong to affirm that there was a seldom-mentioned, secretly worshipped supreme Aztec creator deity. The evidence is overwhelming that in the Triple Alliance, three gods led the pantheon: Huitzilopochtli, Tezcatlipoca, and Tlaloc.
Don't let the metadata bite - an overview – Proctor
Electronic documents contain background data, or “metadata”, that may convey information a practitioner did not intend for another party to have.
QR codes can be another phishing link – Proctor
A new type of cyber-attack targeting small legal practices in Australia has emerged over the past few weeks. It is a variation of a standard phishing attack using a QR code rather than a link sent via email. Examples seen so far start with an email telling you that a software subscription is about to expire but you can renew it for free by scanning the code appearing in the email.

THE PRINCE & THE COYOTE
An ode to the children of migrants who have been taken away. A Mexican American boy takes on heavy responsibilities when his family is torn apart. Mateo’s life is turned upside down the day U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents show up unsuccessfully seeking his Pa at his New York City bodega. The Garcias live in fear until the day both parents are picked up; his Pa is taken to jail and his Ma to a detention center.
Mesoamerican Ballgame
Because of two works-in-progress, I've been thinking about the different iterations of the "Mesoamerican Ball Game" (a relatively unhelpful and broad category that throws together several millennia of differently played sports that share a similar field and ball).
10 Great New YA Books to Read in June 2023
It’s June, one of my favorite months of the year. Not only is it the start of summer, but it’s also Pride Month, so it feels just extra celebratory and joyous. I’m heading into June with that same joy and happiness, but also a dash of determination as LGBTQ+ rights are being threatened in nearly every state in the U.S. One thing that makes it a little bit better? New books. New books almost always make things feel a little brighter, and June has a great line-up of new YA releases that sound amazing.

Two Upcoming Books about the Rise and Fall of the "Aztec Empire"
The summer of 2023 is going to be a busy time for me: a couple of my long-term novel projects have come to fruition and will be publishing at the beginning and end of the season. Ironically, the works themselves-both novels of historical fiction-are set about a hundred years apart, bookending the establishment and overthrow of what is known in Nahuatl as " in Excan Tlahtoloyan," the Triple Alliance of Anahuac, most commonly referred to in English as the Aztec Empire.

Bloomsbury, $19.99 (464p) ISBN 978-1-54-760989-5 Two Mexican teens in separate timelines fall in love via a magical conch shell in this sweeping fantasy by Bowles (They Call Her Fregona) and McCall (Echoes of Grace).
