Accurate and reliable thermochemistry by data analysis of complex thermochemical networks using Active Thermochemical Tables: the case of glycine thermochemistry
Accurate and reliable thermochemistry by data analysis of complex thermochemical networks using Active Thermochemical Tables: the case of glycine thermochemistry Active Thermochemical Tables (ATcT) were successfully used to resolve the existing inconsistencies related to the thermochemistry of glycine, based on statistically analyzing and solving a thermochemical network that includes >3350 chemical species interconnected by nearly 35 000 thermochemically-relevant determinations from...
Teens and parents learn how to combat antisemitism, support Israel in schools
How should your child respond when a non-Jewish friend asks them to justify Israeli actions or policies solely based on your child’s identity? This and other hypothetical questions were the basis for a spirited interactive session with students and parents at the “LFT Accelerator & Parent Summit” led by educators from the American Jewish Committee (AJC) on a recent Sunday morning at the Katz JCC. The program was hosted by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Southern New Jersey (JCRC).

Importance Sampling within Configuration Space Integration for Adsorbate Thermophysical Properties: A Case Study for CH3/Ni(111)
Importance Sampling within Configuration Space Integration for Adsorbate Thermophysical Properties: A Case Study for CH3/Ni(111) A new strategy is presented for computing anharmonic partition functions for the motion of adsorbates relative to a catalytic surface. Importance sampling is compared with conventional Monte Carlo. The importance sampling is significantly more efficient. This new approach is applied to CH3 on Ni(111) as a test case.
NPR is among the worst practitioners of biased reporting against Israel
“The use of media as a weapon,” Hezbollah operative Sheik Nabil Qaouk told New York Times reporter John Kifner in 2000, has “an effect parallel to battle.” Alarmingly, many of our popular media outlets have, for many years, effectively waged that battle against Israel in a war of propaganda.
Media bias and what we can do about it
There is no question that an independent, honest and unbiased media is essential to any free and fair society; an impenetrable bulwark of our democracy. When the media chooses sides, it enables those on the selected side to ignore rules and conduct themselves as they please, having no one to whom they must answer.
Sub 20 cm−1 computational prediction of the CH bond energy - a case of systematic error in computational thermochemistry
Sub 20 cm−1 computational prediction of the CH bond energy – a case of systematic error in computational thermochemistry† The bond dissociation energy of methylidyne, D0(CH), is studied using an improved version of the High-Accuracy Extrapolated ab initio Thermochemistry (HEAT) approach as well as the Feller–Peterson–Dixon (FPD) model chemistry.
Mechanism, Thermochemistry, and Kinetics of the Reversible Reactions: C2H3 + H2 ⇌ C2H4 + H ⇌ C2H5
Mechanism, Thermochemistry, and Kinetics of the Reversible Reactions: C2H3 + H2 ⇌ C2H4 + H ⇌ C2H5 Thanh Lam Nguyen, David H Bross, Branko Ruscic, G. Barney Ellison and John Stanton Abstract High-level coupled cluster theory, in conjunction with Active Thermochemical Tables (ATcT) and E,J-resolved master equation calculations were used in a study of the title reactions, which play an important role in combustion of hydrocarbons.
BookMark: "Caveat Emptor" By Ken Perenyi Explores The World Of Art Forgery
“Caveat Emptor: The Secret Life of an American Art Forger" by Ken Perenyi gives readers an inside look at some of the more obscure, and less than honorable, aspects of the art world. As an aimless teenager in the 1960s, Perenyi began spending time at a local mansion in Hoboken, New Jersey. Known locally as "The Castle," it was the on-again, off-again home to some of the quirkier members of the New York City art scene, like Peter Max and Andy Whorhol.
BookMark: "Lamb" By Christopher Moore
In an irreverent, but sensitive way, Christopher Moore gives us his ideas about what occurred during the “lost” years of Christ's life in his novel “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal.” As the title suggests, “Lamb” is told from the perspective of Jesus’ best friend, Biff, who had been brought back to life at the request of the Messiah some 2,000 years after his crucifixion.
BookMark: "The Swerve: How The World Became Modern" By Stephen Greenblatt
"The Swerve: How the World Became Modern" by Stephen Greenblatt is the biography of a man named Poggio Bracciolini, and the history of a poem titled "On the Nature of Things." Bracciolini began adult life as a scribe, which is the 15th Century version of a notary public. It was a useful, but not unique, position in what is now Italy. Despite his humble beginnings, Bracciolini used his intelligence, charm, and exceptional penmanship to become the personal secretary to Pope John XXII.
BookMark: "The Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie: A Flavia De Luce Mystery"
“It was as black in the closet as old blood. They had shoved me in and locked the door. I breathed heavily through my nose, fighting desperately to remain calm.” So begins “Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie,” the first book in the “Flavia de Luce” murder mystery series by Alan Bradley. What appears to be a rather violent kidnapping is actually just the latest episode in a running battle between 11-year-old Flavia and her two older sisters, 13-year-old Daphne and 17-year-old Ophelia.
4 reasons you need an estate plan
Aretha Franklin's catalog of hit songs will leave a legacy for generations, but, without a will, the legacy of her financial estate is much less certain. According to her attorney, Franklin meant to create an estate plan, but never got around to it. Now her $80 million estate will spend years in probate court. Similarly, at the time of his sudden death, Prince died without a will, and since then, his sizable estate has been entangled in a contentious legal dispute with no resolution in sight.
BookMark: "Strange Practice" By Vivian Shaw
Vivian Shaw’s “Strange Practice” introduces a marvelous new character: Dr. Greta Helsing. Physician to the undead--or differently alive, as Dr. Helsing thinks of her patients--Greta is the most recent iteration of the famous van Helsing family. The family quietly dropped the “van” several generations ago to avoid unnecessary attention from those less inclined to view the undead as good neighbors.
