Critical surface strain regime for stable and active epitaxial platinum oxygen reduction electrocatalysts
Abstract Manipulating surface strain via lattice mismatch can enhance electrocatalytic activity in epitaxial transition metal films, but long-term performance remains challenging. Although thick films can improve stability against dissolution, they may suffer from irreversible strain relaxation, reducing catalytic activity.
Mitigation of hydrogen crossover in liquid alkaline water electrolysers using gas recombination catalysts
|
Abstract The rising demand for hydrogen calls for improvements in the efficiency of liquid alkaline water electrolysers (LAWEs), which can be fulfilled by advanced electrodes or separators. Nevertheless, they also intensify hydrogen crossover and safety concerns, thus mandating efficient mitigation strategies. Here we studied the correlation between cathodes and hydrogen crossover behaviours and mitigated safety risks by designing a gas recombination catalyst (GRC).

How ‘nuclear verdicts’ are driving up trucking costs — and the price of almost everything
Moving freight across the U.S. always carries risk. But in recent years, a fast-growing threat to the economics of trucking has erupted — not on the highway, but in the courtroom. “Nuclear verdicts,” legal and insurance shorthand for jury awards exceeding $10 million, have become more frequent and ever larger. What was once remarkable is now everyday news. That relentless climb is fundamentally reshaping the economics of trucking and, by extension, the cost of goods for ordinary Americans.
Your ‘instant’ delivery has a massive hidden cost Original
Want it this week? Tomorrow? How about between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m.?Consumers don’t think twice about ordering something online and expecting to find it on their doorstep within days — or sometimes hours. Behind that convenience lies one of the most complicated problems in modern logistics: delivering over the last mile, the final step in moving a package from a distribution hub to the customer. And it doesn’t come cheap.

How a tractor-trailer parking shortage threatens Thanksgiving traffic safety
It’s 2 a.m. on Interstate 70 near St. Louis, and an off-duty long-haul truck driver is asleep in his cab. His rig is parked beside two other tractor-trailers on the shoulder of the off-ramp to a rest stop, because there are no truck parking spaces left. Complying with federal regulations that limit a truck driver to operating 11 hours within each 14-hour on-duty shift left him no choice: Stop driving or break the law. Suddenly, he’s airborne inside the cab.

'Skyrocketing' cargo theft costs $35 billion a year
Ever since goods were first hauled on wheels, someone has been trying to steal them. Once grudgingly accepted as an unavoidable cost of doing business, cargo theft has exploded into a serious threat to the security of the supply chain. More goods are being taken in more ways, driving up shipping costs that raise prices for consumers. Truckers are still victims of brazen cargo crimes, like armed hijackings.
Low-iridium stabilized ruthenium oxide anode catalyst for durable proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis - Nature Nanotechnology
|
Abstract While mixing iridium (Ir) with ruthenium oxide (RuO2) has proven to be an effective strategy for reducing Ir loading in anode catalysts for proton-exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysers, achieving industrially relevant long-term stability typically requires an Ir-rich, Ru-lean combination.

The road to autonomous tractor-trailers is full of obstacles. Where do we stand?
The road to autonomous trucking is a winding one with many turns still ahead. “Robotrucks” magnify the concerns many have about “robotaxis” and other autonomously driven cars, which are grabbing headlines as their presence grows on city streets. While some root for the arrival of self-driving cars, others worry they are not fail-safe and may cause accidents.

California drops daunting Advanced Clean Truck rule
In a stunning but logical move, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on Jan. 13 withdrew its request for a statutory waiver from the U.S. EPA that CARB would have required to implement its game-changing Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule.
Atomically Dispersed Ni‐N‐C Catalysts for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction
1 Introduction The electrochemical valorization of CO2 has surfaced as an intuitive approach to mitigate the greenhouse effects of rising CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere.[1-4] During valorization, captured CO2 undergoes electrochemical reduction to generate value-added products (e.g., CO, HCOOH, CH4, C2H4, CH3OH, C2H5OH, etc.), which can be used as fuels and key feedstocks to the chemical industry.[5-7] As these chemicals are traditionally produced from fossil fuel sources,...
Trump in Charge: Weighing the impacts on trucking
Elected again to the presidency of the U.S., Donald Trump wasted no time making good on campaign promises by rapidly rolling out most of his picks for key Cabinet positions by Nov. 13, barely a week after the polls closed. American voters gave the Republicans a trifecta of victory: Trump will take office next year with his party controlling both the House and the Senate. This will mark the first time Republicans have had full control of Congress and the White House since 2018.

Pd-Ru pair on Pt surface for promoting hydrogen oxidation and evolution in alkaline media - Nature Communications
|
Abstract Hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline media is critical for alkaline fuel cells and electrochemical ammonia compressors. The slow hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline electrolytes requires large amounts of scarce and expensive platinum catalysts. While transition metal decoration can enhance Pt catalysts’ activity, it often reduces the electrochemical active surface area, limiting the improvement in Pt mass activity.

Should Fleets Own or Lease Trucks?
Opting to acquire power units through a finance or full-service lease in lieu of ownership has long been seen as a financial decision, typically based on how standard a fleet’s trucks specs are and how quickly it cycles out trucks.
EPA Tightens the Screws on Harmful Vehicle Emissions
The race to zero-emission vehicles just got turbocharged. This spring, the U.S. government issued its strictest limits yet on greenhouse gas emissions from medium- and heavy-duty trucks as well as from light-duty vehicles. The new standards are written to further cut back carbon emissions that speed up climate change and airborne pollutants that endanger human health.
U.S. EPA heavy truck GHG rule drawing legal fire
Upon its release on March 29, the U.S. EPA’s latest final rule on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for new heavy trucks was met with stiff resistance by trucking interest groups. Their initial salvos were strongly worded press releases countering EPA claims justifying the rulemaking. Now, they’ve escalated to launching lawsuits against the rule’s provisions. And environmental and health safety groups that aim to protect the rule are filing their own lawsuits to defend the rule as it is written.

Spiralling nuclear costs make the MOD’s equipment plan unsustainable.
David Cullen wrote about the recent report from the National Audit Office into MoD spending plans. His blog first appeared on the Nuclear Information Service website. The Ministry of Defence’s plan for equipment acquisition over the next decade has once again been branded unaffordable, with overspending on its nuclear programme now clearly responsible for the overall insolvency of the plan.

Why rolling on EV-specific tires may pay off
Electric trucks carry a load, in more ways than one. There is the work they are designed to carry out, hauling and delivering freight or serving as a platform for vocational equipment, and then their critical role as slashers of greenhouse gas emissions.
Tuning the thermal activation atmosphere breaks the activity–stability trade-off of Fe–N–C oxygen reduction fuel cell catalysts - Nature Catalysis
Abstract Fe–N–C catalysts are the most promising platinum group metal-free oxygen-reduction catalysts, but they suffer from a low density of active metal sites and the so-called activity–stability trade-off. Here we report an Fe–N–C catalyst prepared by adding an optimal amount of H2 to the traditional inert atmosphere during the thermal activation.
DSARs: Motive And A Coordinated Action
On 26 October 2023, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) delivered a preliminary ruling in FT v DW (Case C307-22) (the Decision) deciding that, amongst other things, an individual is not required to inform a controller about the reasons for making a data subject access request (DSAR) under Article 15 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
CARB rules impacting fleet engine choices
Once technological progress picks up speed in a given lane, it can seem like its route to the future is inevitable and the endless adjustments needed to get there— and the dead ends backed out of – fade into a gentle blur. To some degree, when it comes to the greening of heavy-duty diesel engines it already seems that way. The first emission standards for these engines became effective in California 1973 and across the nation a year later.
When Will Drunk-Driving Detection Be Mandated on Light Vehicles?
Mandatory technology that promises to curtail the carnage on the highway wrought by drunk and otherwise impaired drivers is on its way. Advanced drunk driving prevention technology (ADDPT) is the umbrella term that covers the work that’s been going on for years to leverage advanced technologies to develop devices designed to stop drunk drivers in their tracks.
Truck-Mounted vs. Towed Impact Attenuators
Mobile impact attenuators, be they truck-mounted or towed, are designed to protect utility crews and their equipment by absorbing the kinetic energy released when a vehicle crashes into their work zone. In simple terms, an attenuator is a cushion fitted to the rear of a truck or trailer. These devices are engineered to improve roadside safety.

The state of reducing truck crashes
Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, camera-based mirrors, and blind-spot warning systems, are becoming commonplace on new Class 8 highway trucks. These systems are also gaining acceptance as options on some medium- and heavy-duty work trucks. Exact take rates for ADAS are hard to pin down. ADAS on Class 8 on-highway tractors makes for a compelling and measurable use case.
