Irritant asthma and work: cases from the UK SWORD reporting scheme from 1999 to 2018
Discussion This analysis has described one national reporting scheme’s 20-year experience of irritant asthma linked with workplace exposures. The data offer insight into the typical jobs, industrial sectors and attributed exposures related to this condition, with a predominance of chemical and related process operatives, labourers in process and plant operations and cleaners and domestics affected.

Asthma in pesticide users: an update from the Great Britain Prospective Investigation of Pesticide Applicators’ Health (PIPAH) cohort study
Respiratory Follow-up Population The respiratory questionnaire follow-up population of 2578 participants were similar to the baseline population. They had a mean age of 60.0 years (SD 11.1) and 807 (34%) had ever smoked. The majority (2493, 97.4%) were male. 457 (18.1%) participants reported wheeze in their chest in the last 12 months and 297 (11.5%) had a doctor diagnosis of asthma. Of the 297 with asthma, the majority reported this to be a current problem (216, 73.2%).

Section 3 diagnosis Early diagnosis of OA is important, but a UK study found the average duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis was 4 years23; in keeping with the diagnostic delays of between 1.5 and 5 years reported elsewhere.24–27 The reasons for late diagnosis are multifactorial; in some cases, a lack of awareness or patient engagement is responsible,22 28 whereas in others, diagnostic delays result from missed opportunities to ask simple screening questions in primary and secondary...

Pneumoconiosis
Abstract The term ‘pneumoconiosis’ is used to describe a set of lung diseases caused by the repeated inhalation of small particles in which long-term retention in the lung is a key causative factor. The site of damage within the lung is a function of both the size and the toxicity of the inhaled dust, fume or fibre. The ability of different types of particles to cause fibrosis varies widely: crystalline silica is highly fibrogenic, whereas iron oxide is much less so.

Epidemiology of silicosis: reports from the SWORD scheme in the UK from 1996 to 2017
Key messages What is already known about this subject? What are the new findings? Over the last two decades, the number of new silicosis cases reported in the UK each year has been relatively static. The majority of reported UK cases originate from industrial sectors traditionally linked with silica exposure, and are diagnosed whilst they are of working age.
Artificial stone-associated silicosis in the UK
We read with interest the recent article by Hoy et al highlighting the risk of accelerated silicosis in workers installing kitchen and bathroom worktops.1 The Australian paper noted that artificial stone had been available in Australia since the early 2000s, and identified seven cases of silicosis diagnosed between 2011 and 2016.

Mortality due to IPF and mesothelioma in Europe - A link with historic asbestos use?
AbstractBackground: Mortality due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in the UK is rising in parallel to that of mesothelioma, with both conditions being significantly associated with historic asbestos imports.Aims: To establish whether there was any association between IPF and mesothelioma mortality in Europe, and to investigate whether IPF mortality varied depending on historic asbestos usage. Methods: Age-standardised mortality rates for IPF were plotted against mesothelioma mortality...
