Government Names And Shames Over NMW
Last week the government published a list naming and shaming over 200 employers for failing to pay the National Minimum Wage ('NMW') to 63,000 workers, amounting to a combined underpayment of almost £5 million. Among them were some major high street retailers including WH Smith, M&S, Argos and Lloyds Pharmacies, all of which stated unintentional errors in calculation as the cause. This highlights the difficulties in calculating the NMW, even for employers with significant administrative resources.
Preparing For Family Friendly Workplaces
Several long-awaited pieces of legislation aimed at creating a more family friendly workplace received Royal Assent last week and once in force, these will extend the current period of redundancy protection for parents, allow the parents of babies requiring neonatal care to take periods of paid leave and provide carers with a week of unpaid leave per year.
Can Farfetched Allegations Still Constitute Sexual Harassment At Work?
Sexual harassment is where someone engages in unwanted conduct of a sexual nature and the conduct has the purpose or effect of violating another person's dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment. A recent case has shown, however, that the Employment Tribunal will still apply a level of common sense when farfetched allegations are made.
Slow grid rollout shows why Myanmar should join the personal energy revolution
Myanmar should rethink its electrification plan to acknowledge the worldwide growth of personal energy, which could make traditional grid connections redundant in some areas. By DAVID FULLBROOK | FRONTIER The task of electrifying Myanmar is proving hard. Recent data shows that the Ministry of Electricity and Energy’s National Electrification Project, funded through a US$400 million World Bank loan, is likely to miss many of its targets when phase one wraps up in 2021.
Amazon’s electric trucks: US$20 billion turning point for sustainable shipping
Amazon is adding 10,000 electric trucks in 2021 reaching 100,000 by 2030. As the fleet rolls out, Amazon will learn how to optimise routes, electricity and batteries to maximise savings. A faster way to fix electricity
TAMING RIVERS with dams in order to produce electricity has sparked controversy in Myanmar. Due to social and environmental impacts, projects such as the Myitsone dam on the Ayeyarwady River, and proposed dams on the Thanlwin River, have been met with resistance from various quarters. Despite this, more dams are reportedly proposed as part of a revised energy master plan. More electricity is certainly required.
Energy and climate: A turning point looms
“…if [Asia] implements the coal-based plans right now, I think we are finished,” Mr Jim Yong Kim, the World Bank president, told the Climate Action Summit in Washington in early May. Kim’s concerns about plans by China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam to build three-quarters of the world’s new coal-burning power plants by 2020 were widely reported.
