What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for the Journal of International Law at UCLA in 1986.

To have courage.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to be Charles Bukowski, but couldn't drink that much.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The many stories telling the public that City Hall does not spend money wisely.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Run the other way. Unless it's your true passion.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That no one in California wants the news from a conservative perspective.
