Distinct body mass index trajectories throughout childhood in girls with early puberty
Abstract Early pubertal development in girls has been associated with increased adiposity in childhood. However, longitudinal body mass index (BMI) trajectories preceding the diagnosis of precocious puberty (PP) or premature adrenarche (PA) are less well described. We hypothesized that distinct BMI trajectories leading to overweight or obesity could be identified already in infancy and early childhood in these girls.
Fish oil-derived fatty acids during pregnancy and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children at age 10 - A randomized controlled trial
Abstract Fish oil-derived omega-3 fatty acids (ꙍ-3 FA), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are critical for early brain development, but evidence of causal effects from supplementation during pregnancy is limited.
Genetic investigation of the association between maternal dietary patterns and offspring ADHD
Abstract In observational studies, an unhealthy dietary pattern during pregnancy is associated with an increased likelihood of offspring ADHD. We investigated whether such associations may be partly attributable to genetic confounding. Polygenic scores (PGSs) for a healthy dietary pattern were calculated for mother, father, and child trios in the COPSAC2010 cohort. Diagnoses and trait scores of ADHD were assessed in the children at age 10.
A metabolomic signature of maternal BMI is associated with pregnancy complications across two independent pregnancy cohorts - Communications Medicine
Abstract Maternal obesity is increasingly common and linked to pregnancy complications, likely driven by underlying metabolic perturbations. This study investigates the association between maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and pregnancy complications through blood metabolomics, aiming to identify specific metabolites mediating these associations.

A western dietary pattern during pregnancy is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood and adolescence - Nature Metabolism
Abstract Despite the high prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders, the influence of maternal diet during pregnancy on child neurodevelopment remains understudied. Here we show that a western dietary pattern during pregnancy is associated with child neurodevelopmental disorders. We analyse self-reported maternal dietary patterns at 24 weeks of pregnancy and clinically evaluated neurodevelopmental disorders at 10 years of age in the COPSAC2010 cohort (n = 508).
Thanksgiving and Gratitude
With the Thanksgiving season upon us, we thought it fitting to do some theological and psychological reflection on gratitude. Join us for this stimulating conversation with Rosemead Professor Dr. Stacy Eltiti, as we explore dimensions of gratitude that you might not have thought about before. It can be applied all year round, not just during the Thanksgiving holiday. Dr. Stacy Eltiti is Associate Professor of Psychology at Rosemead School of Psychology, Biola University.

Pro-Child Policies
with Katy Faust Sean McDowell, Scott Rae — November 19, 2024 Is it really true that no area of culture, politics or economics where we prioritize what is best for children? What are some of the biggest cultural lies about masculinity and femininity that impact children? What are some of the main cultural misconceptions about the family that harm children? And how does green energy subsidization negatively impact children?

Metaethics: A Short Companion: An Interview with David A. Horner and J. P. Moreland about their New Book
Talbot School of Theology Professors David A. Horner and J.P. Moreland recently published a new book — Metaethics: A Short Companion. Here, they share more about the book with the Good Book Blog. Good Book Blog (GBB): Congratulations on the publication of your new book! Thanks for answering a few questions for us. First of all, what is “metaethics”?
How to Think Biblically about Morality and Ethics
How should we think biblically about morality in today’s culture? What do we way to the skeptic who insists that morality is nothing more than a matter of one’s opinion? What is the moral argument for God’s existence? Why is God critical for a coherent view of morality? We’ll answer these questions and more with our guest, our colleague Dr Dave Horner around his new book with JP Moreland, (don’t let the title throw you) Metaethics—or how to think about morality and ethics.
Using readmers and hapmers in assessing phase switching after read error correction of Oxford Nanopore Sequences
Abstract Methods for sequence error correction can improve sequence accuracy; however, there can be unintended errors added during error correction. One such example is phase switching, whereby sequences derived from genomes containing more than one parental copy have contributions from more than one parental haplotype. Such switches are mistakes that can confound downstream analyses especially de novo genome assembly.

Integrative structural analysis of Pseudomonas phage DEV reveals a genome ejection motor - Nature Communications
Abstract DEV is an obligatory lytic Pseudomonas phage of the N4-like genus, recently reclassified as Schitoviridae. The DEV genome encodes 91 ORFs, including a 3398 amino acid virion-associated RNA polymerase (vRNAP). Here, we describe the complete architecture of DEV, determined using a combination of cryo-electron microscopy localized reconstruction, biochemical methods, and genetic knockouts. We built de novo structures of all capsid factors and tail components involved in host attachment.
Longitudinal metabolomics data analysis informed by mechanistic models
Abstract Motivation: Metabolomics measurements are noisy, often characterized by a small sample size and missing entries. While data-driven methods have shown promise in terms of analyzing metabolomics data, e.g., revealing biomarkers of various phenotypes, metabolomics data analysis can significantly benefit from incorporating prior information about metabolic mechanisms.

Characterizing human postprandial metabolic response using multiway data analysis
Abstract Analysis of time-resolved postprandial metabolomics data can enhance our knowledge about human metabolism by providing a better understanding of similarities and differences in postprandial responses of individuals, with the potential to advance precision nutrition and medicine. Traditional data analysis methods focus on clustering methods relying on summaries of data across individuals or use univariate methods analyzing one metabolite at a time.

Reasons to be optimistic in 2023
The global economy, according to the head of the International Monetary Fund, is like “a ship in choppy waters”. And though there may be disagreement about the precise size of the waves buffeting the economy, it is clear that for many sectors the last few months have been anything but plain sailing. David Horner reviews 'The Young Menzies: Success, failure, resilience 1894–1942', edited by Zachary Gorman
Robert Menzies retired as prime minister more than fifty-three years ago and died in 1978, yet he remains not just a dominant figure in Australian political history but a strong influence on modern political affairs. As Zachary Gorman, editor of this latest book on Menzies, argues, ‘it has become almost a cliché to say that he built or at least shaped and moulded modern Australia’.

5 Resources for Missions History Buffs
5 Resources for Missions History Buffs History is anything but boring. Studying history not only tells us exciting, shocking, and fascinating real-life stories, but through these stories, we are both encouraged and warned by the tales of those who have gone before us in this life. Missions history is no different. Our past is replete with stories of missionaries who have sacrificed everything for the sake of the gospel.

What Good Are “Thoughts and Prayers” After a Mass Shooting?
"GOD ISN’T FIXING THIS," New York’s Daily News announced in the aftermath of the latest US mass shooting, in San Bernardino. Their target? Presidential candidates who immediately responded to the tragedy by offering sufferers their “thoughts and prayers,” not calling for more gun control. The headline’s sentiment is widely shared, as seen in the flood of “prayer shaming" by celebrities, politicians, and other pundits on Twitter (#prayershaming) and various online media.
