Review – Civil War - Geeks Under Grace
Alex Garland is one of my favorite filmmakers, and I’m proud to say I had the opportunity to meet him briefly in college. It wasn’t a long conversation, as I was just a boom operator at the time. Back in 2015, I was asked to record an interview with student filmmakers when I was still attending Tribeca Flashpoint College as part of Garland’s media tour for Ex Machina. I installed a lav microphone on him, briefly spoke with him, and went our separate ways.
Review – Cabrini - Geeks Under Grace
With International Women’s Day just around the corner, Angel Studios is set to release its newest film about how the faith of a great 20th-century woman impacted the Roman Catholic Church and American life! It tells the story of how one Italian nun became the focal point of an international charitable organization and came to be canonized as a saint. Violence/Scary Images: Characters die on screen, with others being assaulted, beaten, and nearly killed.
Review – The Last Voyage of the Demeter - Geeks Under Grace
It says something about the modern film landscape when a movie releases on video-on-demand just a month or two after its release date. Sadly, the film industry is in a contracted state where only a few movies per year can earn back their budgets adequately, and many solid films are left to scrape by on limited theatrical interest and video-on-demand rentals.
Review – Star Wars Ahsoka: Season 1 - Geeks Under Grace
Disney’s Star Wars continues at pace to be a contentious and confusing mess, with new shows being met with a combination of adoration from fans and general malaise from pop culture at large. 2023 has already proved the admirable misfire of Mandalorian Season 3 and the largely ignored second season of The Bad Batch. And this is coming after Andor simultaneously proved to be Disney+’s most critically successful original series, while being completely ignored by the general public.
Adapting Narnia On Stage: The Logos Theater Reflects On Staging 'The Horse And His Boy'
Sunday, August 6, was a solemn day for the cast and crew of The Logos Theater. It marked the closing performing of the theater’s stage adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s fantasy novel A Horse And His Boy, which the small South Carolina-based theater company has toured at Washington DC’s Museum of the Bible for the past half year.
Review – Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny - Geeks Under Grace
Ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, two things have been certain—the studio would be producing more Star Wars movies, and the studio would be producing more Indiana Jones movies (and they would also do a Willow show that nobody watched, which would be buried in the Disney Vault forever due to tax purposes).
Review - Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre
I’m on the record as a noted hater of Guy Ritchie. There was a time in the early 2000s when the acclaimed director of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch was viewed as a fresh stylist and an up-and-coming auteur with a comparable career trajectory to that of Quentin Tarantino, but that didn’t come to pass.
Review - Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio - Geeks Under Grace
Director Guillermo del Toro has been granted a great gift in the last five years—Oscar clout. The one-time director of films like Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, Cronos, and more has spent the majority of his career fighting middling box office performances and struggling to get his visionary genre work onto the big screen.
Retro Review – Gods and Generals - Geeks Under Grace
This weekend celebrates America’s Independence Day, which marks 246 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence on Monday. With that, I wanted to celebrate the yearly tradition of celebrating the history of our nation (usually by blowing up a small part of it) with a double feature. Last year I discussed the somewhat forgotten musical 1776.
Review – Dune (2021) - Geeks Under Grace
When Frank Herbert released his novel Dune in 1959, he didn’t expect it to take off the way it did. It had failed to attract any interest in the literary world and thus was forced to publish it with Chilton Company, a small Boston-based auto-manual manufacturer. Since then, Dune has sold 20 million copies and become well regarded as one of the most popular science fiction novels of all time.
Review - Cherry - Geeks Under Grace
The first of the Russo Brothers’ directorial projects following Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) has reached theaters and streaming devices near you! Cherry (2021) is the first film they’ve worked on following them becoming the most financially successful directors in cinematic history.
