Bringing the NHS 10-Year Health Plan to life: Lessons from the frontline
By As momentum builds around England’s 10-Year Health Plan, three weeks of national conversations reveal a common theme: clarity of purpose, but deep concern about delivery. Drawing on insights from health leaders across Newcastle, Manchester and London, David Meates, Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, explores three critical shifts needed to turn vision into lasting change. Over the past three weeks in the UK, one detail has explicitly stood out for me.
Supporting leaders to implement integrated care and population health
If you are part of a leadership team working across a health system to deliver integrated care or improve population health, we can help you by providing consultancy advice and support. Our starting point is the recognition that delivering change is never easy, especially when it involves working across systems of care.
What does the future hold for integrated care systems? | The King's Fund
Integrated care systems, as they were re-branded in updated planning guidance published recently by NHS England, bring together NHS commissioners, providers and local authorities to plan how to improve health and care for the populations they serve. For the organisations involved in these systems, lines of accountability remain unchanged. NHS organisations continue to look upwards to NHS England and NHS Improvement and local authorities look outwards to their communities.
Sustainable primary care provides a platform for system change | The King's Fund
In the final blog in our series about the transformation of the Canterbury health system in New Zealand, Vince Barry, Chief Executive of Pegasus Health, looks at how building sustainable primary care creates a platform for change. My week working in the UK with The King’s Fund and NHS colleagues convinced me that the case for change in the NHS is unquestionable.
Whole-system transformation needs whole-system engagement
David Meates, Chief Executive of Canterbury District Health Board, talks of creating a ‘social movement’ when he recalls how the health system undertook transformation. The social movement focused initially on the 19,000 staff working in the system either as direct employees or employed by organisations delivering care under contract to the board. Staff were closely involved in creating a vision for the future and leading work to translate it into practice.
Accountable care organisations (ACOs) explained | The King's Fund
Delivering high-quality care in the community and people’s homes is a priority for ACOs in the United States – as it is for emerging ACOs in England. This means understanding the population served and stratifying that population according to need and health risk. People at high risk of hospital admission may receive support from case managers and others to help them live at home. People with long-term conditions will often receive targeted support to help them manage their health.
