East Africa: Ethiopia Is an Early Symptom of Africa's Impending Covid Crises
In March 2020, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made an unthinkable announcement: national elections planned for August were postponed until 2021. At least. The country's fledgling democratic infrastructure couldn't safely handle the ballot amid Covid-19 restrictions. The vote would have to wait - it was in everyone's best interest.

'Cautious optimism:' Canada's uranium major set to reopen
Cameco is planning to restart its Cigar Lake mine in northern Saskatchewan early September, a move greeted with anticipation by employees who have been off work since March. The Canadian uranium major put Cigar Lake mine, about an eight-hour drive north of La Ronge, into temporary shutdown in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its partner Orano Canada Inc., simultaneously shuttered its McClean Lake mill, where ore from Cigar Lake is processed.

A new approach to ending Africa's wars - New African Magazine
Despite considerable progress, parts of Africa are still mired in violent civil wars that are costing millions of lives and destroying national economies. The UN’s record of intervention – or lack of intervention in some cases – has been one of failure. In this composite cover story, David Meffe argues that only a different approach to maintaining peace can bring an end to this African tragedy.
Lt. Gen. Roméo Dallaire: 21st-century approach to maintaining peace in Africa - New African Magazine
Armed intervention in conflicts in Africa, carried out by the UN or AU or joint missions, have always been controversial because the rules of engagement have neither been clear or, more often than not, practical. How far should the mandate of the peacekeeping forces extend? When and how should actual combat be engaged? For what end? A classic example is the failure of the 1994 UN Mission to Rwanda, which failed to prevent the genocide. Clearly, a fresh approach is needed.

Years after Fukushima meltdown, Saskatchewan still suffering
While Japan and its surrounding waters continue to bear the brunt of the catastrophic 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, its economic aftershocks are striking the mines of northern Saskatchewan. Saskatoon-based Cameco, the world’s largest publicly traded uranium miner, recently announced more than 620 layoffs, significant quarterly losses, and a contract dispute with the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to the tune of $1.3 billion.
LGBTQ officers need to pick the right target
Smiling white police officers in uniform, posing for selfies with brother officers of colour, each adorned with the rainbow paraphernalia of Pride. It’s good stuff, isn’t it? “Our Pride includes the police!” is shouted from metaphoric rooftops. They laughingly trade their MP-5s and 9 mms for Super Soakers, blasting water at the crowd in summertime fun. But, whose Pride is it? Who is “our” and who does that “our” exclude when the cry is for inclusive Pride parades?
Sarabi: Inside, Out - New African Magazine
A young band drawn from Nairobi’s mean streets is fast-becoming a staple of the middle-class live music circuit. By David Meffe. Somewhere on a moonlit rooftop of Nairobi, a group huddles together, humming a refrain that’s become hypnotic in its reverberating mantra. Their faces, obscured by masks, evoke no emotion, only an unequivocal sense of anonymity, like being no one and everyone all at once. The outlines of beady eyes flicker amidst rows of dangling halogen bulbs.
