When You Should—and Shouldn’t—Use AI to Search the Web Original
If you've interacted with the likes of Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, you've noticed that in addition to everything else they do, these AI chatbots can search the web for you. Depending on what you’re looking for, it can be easier to find more relevant results through a chatbot, which may explain why Google is so keen to push AI Mode for its own search engine.
Scientists Separated Psilocybin's Brain Benefits From Its Hallucinogenic Trip Original
Psilocybin, the psychedelic compound in 'magic mushrooms', is being looked at for treatments for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Ideally, though, researchers want to separate any potential brain benefits from the hallucinogenic trip that's usually included. A new study published in Nature Neuroscience shows how that might be possible.

Apple reveals that the new iPad mini has a smaller battery — but here's why that's actually a good thing
The 8th-gen iPad mini has a 4,900 mAh capacity battery It's a slight reduction on what we saw with the previous model However, actual battery life hasn't been reduced Apple is always rather coy when it comes to the battery capacities in its devices, but European Union regulations mean it has to now publish this data publicly: and we just learned that the new 2026 iPad mini has a battery capacity of 4,900 mAh. As Notebookcheck points out, that's lower than the 5,034 mAh battery capacity we saw...

The Solar System Was Choosing Fire Over Ice Right From The Beginning, Study Shows Original
There are many contrasts between ice and fire in both real and fictional worlds – from the volcanoes of Iceland, to the Game of Thrones fantasy series. These two elements were at play in the early, formative years of our Solar System, too. In the region surrounding the early Sun, fire was represented by chondrules, tiny fragments of rock that had been formed through intense heat. For ice, there was matrix, a fine-grained and cold dust loaded with water ice and organic molecules.

Scientists Have Built a Robot Dog Powered by Human Brain Cells Original
Using living neurons as the foundation of computer chips promises to bring significant advantages over conventional systems in terms of both energy efficiency and adaptability: As sophisticated as AI is, the human brain needs a lot less power to run and is still much better at dealing with the unfamiliar.
Blocking One Enzyme Extended Lifespan in Aging Mice by 17% Original
US politician Benjamin Franklin famously said that death and taxes are the only two certainties of life, and while plenty of people seem to manage to evade paying what they owe to the state, no one has figured out how to live forever yet. When it comes to extending life though, and staying healthier in old age, science and society are making progress. Now researchers from China have identified a link between longevity and a specific enzyme (a 'worker' protein).

After 30 Years, FDA Approves First-Ever Drug For a Rare Neurological Disorder Original
Alexander disease is a rare genetic neurological disorder that affects less than one in a million people worldwide. It leads to a multitude of problems, including a loss of mobility, seizures, and issues with speech, and it's often fatal. The disease is caused by a fault in the gene that makes glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). The fault creates abnormal versions of GFAP, causing the protein to clump into tangles called Rosenthal fibers.

Behold a Prehistoric Lizard Tail Trapped in Amber Original
If you’ve got an escape trick that works, stick with it: A lizard tail trapped in amber reveals that these reptiles were using the same evasion tactic—lose the tail, regrow it later—almost 100 million years ago. Many species of modern lizard will detach their own tails if they get grabbed by a bird, snake, or other predator. The tail can keep wriggling as a distraction once it's been shed, allowing the lizard to make a clean getaway—with a replacement tail eventually growing back.

An Overlooked Immune Cell Killed The Deadliest Form of Lung Cancer in Lab Tests Original
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a particularly aggressive and deadly disease: fewer than 7 in 100 people survive it for five years. One of the tricks SCLC uses to persist and to evade treatments is to hide itself from the immune system. Now, an international team of researchers has found a way of removing that disguise and making SCLC more vulnerable. The crucial component of the new approach is a type of immune cell called gamma delta T cells.

PFAS Levels in US Drinking Water Could Be Twice as High as Reported Original
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are often informally referred to as 'forever chemicals' because they've soaked so deeply into the environment and take such a long time to break down. There are thousands of these PFAS in circulation, used extensively in manufacturing and product materials, and scientists are busy continuing to assess what exactly the health risks of all of them are – and to what extent we're exposed to them every day.

Cloudy With a Chance of Incineration: Predicting Weather on Distant Worlds
The weather on distant planets can tell us a lot about them, including how they formed, what they’re made of, and how likely it is that we might find life there. However, there’s not much meteorological information to go on for celestial objects outside our solar system—they’re basically just flickers of light traveling across the vast emptiness of space.

BM Hits 99% Accuracy in Transferring Quantum Information Between Two Chips
Prototype quantum computers already exist, but if we're to truly realize their full potential, they need to be significantly scaled up and stabilized – and a team of researchers from IBM just announced an important step toward this goal. The upgrade concerns the long-distance couplers (L-couplers) that connect qubits together. Qubits sit at the heart of quantum computers, and unlike the conventional bits that underpin classical computing, they're not restricted to a binary state of 1 or 0.

This Dark Spot on the Moon Might Be a Giant Lunar Cave
You’ve heard of the dark side of the moon, but NASA is also looking to explore a dark spot on the moon that it thinks may be a giant underground cave system. An image of the spot, known as the Marius Hills Pit (MHP), was snapped by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Based on initial estimates, it’s thought that the hole could be nearly 300 feet wide and about 150 feet deep. This is the Marius Hills Pit, but we’re not exactly sure what’s underneath it.

Too Much RNA Can Actually Starve Cells of Energy, Study Finds Original
RNA, or ribonucleic acid, is one of the most important molecules in keeping the body functioning correctly. One of its main jobs is to turn the information stored in our genetics into actual proteins that build and operate cells, for example. To stay healthy, cells keep RNA production and deletion in a careful balance, but there are ways this balance can be tipped over. Invading viruses tend to produce more RNA, and aging, certain cancers, and neurodegenerative diseases can also cause disruption.
