The remarkable restoration of St Birinus, Dorchester-upon-Thames
St Birinus, probably a monk of St Andrew’s Benedictine Monastery on the Caelian Hill in Rome, was ordered by Pope Honorius I to England in 634 AD to convert the West Saxons. A year later he landed at Southampton. He succeeded in converting Cynegils, the West Saxon king. The latter gave St Birinus Dorchester-upon-Thames, as his episcopal see. St Birinus died in 650 AD. Some 30 years later, his remains were moved to Winchester Cathedral.
Social unrest appeased in Colombia, but crisis goes on
In April, massive demonstrations exploded in Cali and in several Colombian cities. A combination of rising poverty, political dissatisfaction, and the Covid-19 pandemic led many people, especially the youth, to demand President Iván Duque’s impeachment. After a few months, the mobilization lost momentum, even though a political solution has never emerged. But now many hope that the protests will influence the 2022 elections.
How Dante shows up wokeness
The text came 45 minutes before Year 1 started on 2 September. “Just to let you know that Sasha is now Haruto (Japanese name). We tried it over the summer and didn’t think it would stick but it did. We’ve informed the school.” This message came from a parent – one of two mothers in the family – in relation to my son’s best friend at school. Sasha – now Haruto – was the only person my son would know well in his new class.
Reading the Runes
The vagaries of the ongoing pandemic meant that my plans to spend at least some of the summer bobbing about in the Pacific Northwest, fishing for salmon off the back of a floating gin palace, were thwarted for the second year running. Like so many people, I opted instead for a domestic break: in my case in Scotland, staying with friends in Angus, 20 miles north of Dundee.
