Friends With Money #18: Why gold is as valuable as ever for your portfolio
The threat of rising inflation, faltering Chinese property markets, and doubts about any economic recovery in a COVID-19 world mean that interest in gold as a safe-haven for Aussie investors is gleaming once again. Gold can be held directly or more conveniently through shares in mining companies, managed funds or themed ETFs. But why does gold remain useful in a diversified portfolio? And is cryptocurrency used as a defensive asset taking some of the shine off gold's reputation?
AMP slashes superannuation fees
Members of AMP's super products will see savings across both administration and investment fees from October, with some set to make significant savings. As a result of consolidating its superannuation products from 11 to three, AMP's MySuper members will see an 8% drop on average across dollar administration and investment fees. Those in Choice products will see an average 29% saving across both fee types, excluding indirect fees.
The cryptocurrency cons that begin as romance scams
The moonward trajectory of Bitcoin has garnered mainstream attention. What's received less attention, though, are the associated cryptocurrency scams you'll want to avoid. Crypto scams come in all shapes and sizes. This month, Stefan Qin, a 24-year-old Aussie cryptocurrency hedge fund manager, pleaded guilty in the United States for defrauding his investors of US$90 million. But you don't have to be investing big money to get scammed - scammers sell their fraud in bulk.
Refund rules: when your gym has to give you your money back
For many of us, going to the gym is a healthy feature of our weekly routine. Yet in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, they can be the exact opposite. On Monday, the federal government ordered the closure of gyms - though outdoor training groups of 10 are still permitted - leaving many wondering about the status of their memberships. Most of the big gym chains have either put their memberships on a time-freeze, or will allow memberships to be frozen.
How QSuper and Sunsuper merger could affect 1.5 million Aussies
A potential merger is set to change the superannuation landscape and would have implications for more than 1.5 million Australians. QSuper and Sunsuper are about to commence due diligence for a merger which, if completed, would create the country's largest superannuation fund with more than $195 billion in assets. WA Super and First State Super are at a similar stage towards merging.
CBA will cover your mortgage for a year in the case of death or illness
The death or terminal illness of a family member can place an overwhelming financial burden on families, especially if that person was the primary bread winner. With the loss of this income stream, mortgage repayments and other costs can quickly pile up with no way to meet them. A new scheme from the Commonwealth Bank would cover mortgage payments of affected customers for about a year.

Basic bank accounts are changing for the better, here's how
A basic bank account in Australia now has no minimum deposit, free direct debit facilities (including access to a debit card) and free unlimited domestic transactions. There will also be no such thing as informal overdrafts on low or no-fee accounts, and no overdrawn or dishonour fees. These changes to basic bank accounts were approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) as part of a broad update to the Australian Banking Association's (ABA) Banking Code of Practice.
Men get stressed if wives earn more than 40% of household income
Gender norms have been baked into society over hundreds of years, making them hard to shift. But in the words of Bob Dylan, the times they are a-changin'. "What we are seeing is some emerging rebalancing between the genders with regards to work and income, though the changes we are seeing have so far been fairly subtle," says Professor Roger Wilkins from the University of Melbourne. "The gender pay gap is still big but it is narrowing.
Why sooner is better in property market investing
Young people are less likely to buy a home than they were in the past, new research by the Arc Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) shows. UNSW Sydney senior research fellow and lead author Rafal Chomik says the findings are in line with key demographic trends - the same way traditional life events are occurring, intentionally or unintentionally, later in life. "Over the past 50 years the median age of home purchase has increased by six years, from 27 to 33," says Chomik.
So your super fund is merging - what does that mean for you?
"Consolidation" has become the buzzword in the superannuation industry. For years it's been the go-to label for transferring fund members' super into a single fund. More recently, it's been used to describe the wave of mergers and joint ventures reshaping the industry. The mergers we see now are the direct result of the work of the Productivity Commission, which found a market saturated with 29 underperforming MySuper funds.
Forget the smashed avo - Gen Y are better savers than baby boomers
It's official - Gen Y can no longer be referred to as the smashed avocado generation. The title had previously been anointed by baby boomers apparently fed up with the carefree spending habits of their kids. But, according to new research by Suncorp, Gen Yers are out-saving their parents, putting away 32% of their income for a rainy day. It is women aged 18-34 with no kids who live in NSW that are the very best savers of all, according to the Suncorp study of 1600 people.
AI advancements reminiscent of technological improvements just before WWII, naval research chief says
Artificial intelligence is at the top of the Navy’s list of new technologies to get more involved with. Rear Adm. David Hahn, the chief of naval research, said AI may be more important to great power competition than military power itself. “There’s the application of machine learning or optimization of a set of systems you could think about today like the delivery of goods by a company like Amazon,” he said on Agency in Focus: Navy.

“Free range parenting” is that the belief that your children should be perfectly capable of walking to the corner store, playing until the street lights come on, and cooking their own dinner as soon as they are personally mature enough. It is not the business of the state to set what age is the magically “mature enough” threshold, either. Back when they attended public schools, my eldest was capable of walking home from the bus stop by himself when he was in the third grade.
