The Real Implications Of Cash Creation Instead of In Kind
The SEC has been busy, meeting with all of the potential issuers of spot Bitcoin ETFs with active applications in December. These meetings have resulted in the universal adoption of a cash creation methodology by those issuers instead of “in kind” transfers, as is typical for other ETFs. Much has been said about this change, ranging from the absurd to the serious.
Farmer perspectives on benefits of and barriers to extended crop rotations in Iowa, USA
Abstract The highly specialized maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production system that dominates midwestern U.S. agriculture has led to widespread on-farm and off-farm degradation of and damage to natural resources. The practice of extending maize–soybean rotations with small grains and forages has great potential to balance production and environmental goals, but adoption of these practices is low.
Cover crops and weed suppression in the U.S. Midwest: A meta‐analysis and modeling study
Abstract In addition to soil health and conservation benefits, cover crops (CCs) may offer weed control in the midwestern United States, but individual studies report varying effects. We conducted a meta-analysis of studies measuring weed biomass (WBIO) or density (WDEN) in paired CC and no-cover treatments in corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] rotations in the U.S. Midwest. Fifteen studies provided 123 paired comparisons of WBIO and 119 of WDEN.
FLASH FRIDAY: Delay in Long Awaited Rule 606 Compliance
What’s another month or two? That’s the thinking of the Securities and Exchange Commission which recently announced it was delaying Wall Street compliance with the amended Rule 606. Due to the extraordinary market environment brought on by COVID-19 and the need to redeploy assets to maintain regular market function, the regulator opted to err on the side of caution and give firms xx months to comply with the order handling disclosure rules.
CAN There Be Only One?
In the classic 80s Sci Fi Epic, “The Highlander”, immortal beings battle through time to be the last one on the planet. That movie provides interesting metaphors for the crypto markets. First, it describes how many of the leading crypto exchanges have opted to “go it alone” rather than work with their competitors. Second, it describes views on coins themselves, as represented by Bitcoin Maximalists and their derision towards “Alt Coins”.

Howey Schmowey - The Real Answer is to Update Securities Regulations
The SEC should focus more on fraud prevention than if an asset is a security, as fraud can be committed with securities too, argues David Weisberger. Are Market-Moving Bitcoin Traders Evil, or Just Dumb?
Over the past week, we have seen a couple of cases where the only way to explain the price movement in Bitcoin is if traders are dumb, evil or a combination of both. Before delving into the specifics, it is important to understand that the only way such things will cease occurring is if traders get smarter and start using tools (such as provided by CoinRoutes) that incorporate data from all relevant markets.
If You Can’t Beat Em, Join Em???
Traders Magazine Online News, February 6, 2019 David Weisberger With the announcement that Bittrex has joined Kraken, Coinbase, itBit and other exchanges by offering an OTC trading desk, it seems that most exchanges have decided that OTC trading is their best chance to grow their business. This comes amidst a backdrop of OTC desks out-competing the exchanges for market share, particularly for large traders, according to many published reports.
A Tale of Two Selloffs
A Tale of Two Selloffs Traders Magazine Online News, November 21, 2018 David Weisberger “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness … it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…” – Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Over the past week, we have endured not one, but two brutal selloffs in crypto assets, causing depression among the crypto community and schadenfreude among its many...
The REAL Lesson from the Dark Pool Scandals is Buy Side Ambivalence
The news coverage recently on the SEC settlement with Citigroup, where the firm lied to its buy-side clients about the nature of the order flow in its dark pool, has predictably missed the most important point. Instead of the usual fear mongering over HFT triggered by the case, the real story is how Citi was able to deliver poor execution quality for YEARS without either being detected or having its story challenged.
Brave New Coin
Despite the recent SEC decision to not approve the ProShares, Direxion or the Winklevoss Bitcoin ETFs, I believe that the time is almost right for approval of such products. There is, however, at least one structural impediment that should be addressed first: Crypto exchanges should allow the unfettered ability for data providers to consolidate and redistribute quote information.

Crypto Confusion, Wall Street Delusion
After 30+ years of Wall St experience, I took the plunge into crypto last year to start CoinRoutes with my son (his idea & code) to automate crypto trading across exchanges and help investors navigate a fragmented market. As we have progressed, I have been struck by the different perspectives of the crypto community vis a vis “traditional” financial professionals.
The SEC Weighs in on Secondary Crypto Markets
The reecent open letter from the SEC to investors and platforms “that refer to themselves as “exchanges”” is an important step for them to push the crypto markets towards maturation. While stopping short of immediate enforcement actions, it is clear that the SEC is pushing hard towards a more regulated and stable secondary market for trading crypto-assets.
SEC sweep might herald progress in the ICO market » Brave New Coin
Notice that most of these are simple, commonsense principles, which do not rely upon decades of legal precedents. That said, we have seen obvious violations of these principles from many ICOs and SAFT launches. Let’s go through each: Tell the truth: I do not want to single out individual ICOs that I believe to be guilty of this most basic principle, but the SEC enforcement division will certainly act.
Is the term ‘Decentralized Exchange’ an oxymoron? » Brave New Coin
Roughly speaking, there are three types of market structures, and all can coexist: Order Books, Dealer (quote-driven), and auction models. Only auctions require a single physical matching algorithm, but those only are central at discrete moments in time.
Is the Term ‘Decentralized Exchange’ an Oxymoron? - Inside Bitcoins - News, Price, Events
By David Weisberger Mar 3, 2018 11:41 PM EST This story was shared from this siteThere has been a lot of media coverage and chatter in the crypto community over the concept of ‘decentralized’ exchanges. Unfortunately, this type of coverage magnifies the confusion among crypto enthusiasts regarding market structure and price discovery. It is vital to separate discussions of price discovery from the settlement process.
Is it FINALLY time to Turn on the Lights? (to analyze order routing)
Bloomberg published an article called “Trader VIP Clubs, “Ping Pools” Take Dark Pool Trades to New Level” which described the rise of single dealer platforms. While the article is accurate that such platforms are gaining market share, that they provide market makers a method to provide better liquidity to better clients, and that MiFID II essentially promotes a close cousin to the US pools called “Systematic Internalizers,” it creates an interesting impression.
Gazing into the Future of Financial Market Structure
While I am not usually one for predictions (owning to my own record of poor timing), I think that this year will be particularly humbling for a great many people in the market. Many are predicting massive changes and I suspect that those will take much longer to occur than is the common wisdom. In addition, there is a major clash brewing between the "old guard" in D.C. and New York and the newer, techno-centric Silicon Valley crowd in the arena of financial products.
Stop the BS & Promote Real Transparency!
The Wall Street Journal published a good article recently on market data fees. At its core, it was about a reasonable letter sent to the SEC by a broad coalition of market participants. To be frank, I find it astounding that the exchanges can argue against such a request for transparency, but I suppose that I am naïve. You see, I also find it astounding that neither investment professionals nor the investing public has any consistent data to evaluate broker order routing.
Are Broker Dealers Ready for FINRA to Analyze their Routing?
Finra recently informed all of its member brokers that it would be conducting a review of their order routing practices and decisions. While I think that such an analysis is much overdue, it should cause a great deal of consternation among the broker dealer community. In addition to the actual decision-making that goes into firms Smart Order Routers (SORs), the FINRA review will likely dig into each firm’s best execution policies to ensure that they properly evaluate routing choices.
Artificial Intelligence in Trading Crypto Assets Might Not Be So Smart
There is an old expression in computer programming: “Garbage in, Garbage out.” The point of the expression is that if you program logic based on bad data or data derived from the wrong context, that the results will not be what you are looking for.
ICOs: Financial Innovation or Modern Day Scam?
Much has been written recently about the ICO investing craze that has helped nascent companies raise an estimated $3 billion so far and, according to CNBC, even surpassed Venture Capital fundraising for a couple of months last summer. Some of the stories of these vehicles raising money based on poorly written “whitepapers” and severely flawed business models have raised valid concerns, and has reminded many of us of the Dot Com bubble.
BitCoin Futures: Boogeyman or Rational Evolution?
Headlines virtually ooze sensationalism as they inform investors that BitCoin a.k.a. “The boogeyman” is coming, in the form of futures contracts on the CME. The news coverage ranges from the reasonable from Business Insider and the Wall Street Journal to the ludicrous from CNBC, who stokes investor fears by comparing approval of BitCoin Futures to the cause of the Financial Crisis.
Never Mind, These Are Not the Orders You Are Looking For ...
The ICI-led, buy-side initiative to promote better routing transparency could be a major step in the right direction. For this to be true, both the ICI and the SEC, which incorporated the ICI template in the proposed Order Disclosure Rule, must expand it to include basic statistics of routing efficacy for each type of order.
SEC Rule 606: Repair Is Needed Before Any More Pilot Programs Are Started
In order to better understand why this is important, here’s some history on how this market structure based on SORs developed. I first heard about SORs when I met with the founders of Lava Trading in 1999 in the café of what was One World Trade in New York. Their idea was to build technology for Nasdaq traders to take advantage of the growing volume in electronic communication networks (ECNs).
A Tale of Two Stories - How Two Events Have Impacted Market Structure
As Deep Throat said in All the President's Men: "Follow the money. Always follow the money." Two, seemingly, unrelated events over the past couple of months have triggered significant debate over equity market structure. First, the disclosure that ITG secretly conducted proprietary trading, despite marketing themselves as an un-conflicted "agency" broker, set off a series of renewed objections to "Dark Pools".
2015 TOP STORIES: Dear Michael Lewis: If You Don’t Understand Something, Please Ask for Assistance
The superior treatment of retail orders was confirmed in a recent article written in Barron’s by award-winning journalist William Alpert (“Who Makes Money on Your Stock Trades”). While it has received its share of criticism by a cadre of uninformed critics, Mr. Alpert thoroughly researched this article and developed his own statistical programs to analyze actual execution data. They are available via Open Source on GitHub for anyone that wants to improve them, criticize them or simply use them.
