Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Writing for the Detroit Sun, edited by John Sinclair, founder of the White Panther Party.
How is social media changing news?
Making truth and falsehood equivalent -- a pox on the democratic ideal. Freedom of the press now means "easily impressed." Tweets be damned!
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent. A True American with an irrational fear of glowing green rocks.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means freedom from bosses and boardrooms, to roam where one pleases, in search of what passes for the truth these days.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Monkey wrench and Windows 95.
What's your favorite social network?
Spacebook, for inter-alien gossip.
Who do you wish followed you?
Mary's little lamb. And millions of unsuspecting acolytes with big checkbooks.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A New York Times story on my brother and I Pebble Beach, golfing and warring with one another all at once.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Get a job.
When's the best time to pitch you?
23/6, leave me just a little privacy.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Spit-coated, inside sinker/scroogie.
What's your favorite drink?
Gatorade and 200-year-old single-malt.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Making music. I did that for a living once, believe it or not! This was then: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Was_(Not_Was)
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Arts & Letters Daily.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it is all steaks and first-class travel. Sometimes I go by burro, with a bag of tortilla chips and a Spanish/English diccionario....
