David Lawrence’s Biography

David Lawrence, a petroleum geologist with a background in international business, recently became a board member of Stone Energy, an independent oil and gas corporation based in Lafayette, Louisiana. The firm focuses on exploring, acquiring, and drilling properties in Appalachia and the Gulf of Mexico. Prior to accepting the board seat, David Lawrence worked for Shell Upstream Americas as an executive vice president and functional head of global exploration. In his tenure with Shell, he also served as an executive vice president with Royal Dutch Shell in England and the Netherlands.

Before his career in the petroleum industry, David Lawrence studied geology at Lawrence University, where he graduated magna cum laude. Following that, he earned his master of science and PhD in geology at Yale University. While a graduate student, he received the Dana Fellowship and Orville and Estwing Awards. Before starting with Shell in 1984, Lawrence worked for the US Geological Survey Coal Branch in Wyoming, explored for uranium in Colorado and Utah, and taught geology at Yavapai College in Arizona.

Over the course of his career, Lawrence has written over 20 book chapters, abstracts, and articles on technical subjects. In recognition of his accomplishments, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) honored him with the Wallace Pratt Memorial Award, which goes to the author of the best paper published in the AAPG Bulletin, and named him as an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer.
