For Pz’, the style is the substance.
Pz’ for Perfect Issue 11. Photographer: Willy Vanderperre Fashion Editor: Katie Grand Writer: Davy Reed What’s your background and how did you get into modelling? I grew up in Atlanta. My mum came from Gambia when she was like 16 or 17. She was a model. She moved to New York first, then Atlanta. There’s a big African community in Atlanta – it’s Gambian, Senegalese, Nigerian, East African. [When I was growing up] there were these little parties thrown by the Gente community.

Olof Dreijer – Echoed Dafnino We’ve come to expect great things from Olof Dreijer. The Swedish produced made subversive pop and endlessly intriguing pop as The Knife with his sister Karin, and in the years since, he’s maintained his rep as a reliably adventurous DJ on the credible end of the European club circuit, also knocking out wonky remixes for the likes of Björk & Rosalía and Röyksopp & Robyn.

Slawn – !LEEJEJ ft Jeleel! Slawn’s always had one foot in music. The artist and professional shit-stirrer has previously created work with 21 Savage, Central Cee and Skepta, and for his latest stunt, he set up a recording studio inside London’s Saatchi Yates gallery and invited the likes of Blackhaine, Len and road rap legends Tiny Boost and Youngs Teflon to record verses in the presence of chins-stroking spectators.
Pollyfromthedirt finds magic in the mundane with Don't Shoot Now
Yeat – Made it on our Own ft. EsDeeKid EsDeeKid visited Drake’s $100 million mansion in Toronto to shoot the video for this highly-anticipated collab, which is glossier and brighter than fans might have expected. After former FACE cover star Yeat spews his euphoric bars with a clenched jaw like an MDMA-munching Future circa 2012, EsDee takes a moment to toast to his head-spinning success (“I made ten ‘mil while I’m faceless”).

skaiwater – blink twice Back in 2020, North West charmed the world by grabbing the mic and rapping at her dad’s Yeezy show at Paris Fashion Week. Beyond the adorable novelty factor, North is showing signs of legit music talent. She provided moments of much-needed light on Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s Vultures albums, and she dropped a verse on FKA twigs’ joyful single Childlike Things.
Ms Ray will soothe your heartache with her gentle synthpop track,…
Charli xcx – My Reminder Charli xcx is a massive Velvet Underground fan, And so it made perfect sense for her to enlist John Cale for House, the macabre lead single from her Wuthering Heights soundtrack album. Now we’ve heard the full record, it’s clear how important that acknowledgement of Cale’s genius really was, because his signature screechy viola sound is mimicked on a number of tracks.
EsDeeKid cuts through the noise with Omens
EsDeeKid – Omens Right now, EsDeeKid is on his sold-out debut North American tour. I’d be interested to know how it sounds when his Stateside fans rap along to a scouse accent. “I’m rockin’, I’m rockin’ and rockin’, I’m rollin’ /Gone off the Mak’, got an oz in me clothin,’” goes the chorus of his new moshpit-opener Omens. With sharp, throaty delivery, the “rockin”s are pronounced “rokh-in” and “Mak” sounds like “mach” – a detail which linguistics call velar frication.
Ms* Gloom makes synthpop sound quietly spooky on Dumb 4 All
RIP Magic – 5words London-based band RIP Magic have managed to negotiate genuine success from word of mouth hype. They regularly sell out live shows and their new track, 5words, only their third official release, was produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy – the first time he’s produced for another artists over a decade.

Harry Styles strolls onto the dancefloor for Aperture
Rico Ace – Malibu Last year, Rico Ace and EsDeeKid had a mushroom trip in Malibu which was so good that both rappers have immortalised it with their music. Rico features on four tracks from EsDee’s Rebel mixtape – two of which now have over 100 million Spotify streams.
In the crowd at Bassvictim’s Warsaw show
When Bassvictim dropped their first music in 2023, they instantly got a lot of people talking. The London-based duo – featuring Polish singer Maria Manow and American producer Henry ‘Ike’ Clateman – dubbed their disorientating and distortion-damaged style ‘basspunk’, churning out euphoric and trashy underground anthems like Canary Wharf Drift and Air on a G String.

Now "I went through two breakups on the first half of this tour and thats a lot of breakups, actually." Taylor Swift spoke about going through two breakups during The Eras Tour in her docuseries, The End of an Era. • Taylor ended her relationship with Joe Alwyn towards the beginning of the tour, and also …

Len – How Greedy ft. Theodora It’s been one year since Len dropped Conglomerate with Fimiguerrero and Lancey Foux – a collaborative album which toasted to the success of the UK’s alt rap movement. While some of the new guys sound as though they’re never far from the glow of their laptop screens, Len’s clearly been spending plenty of time on the dance floor. “All the fellas to the back, all the ladies to the front,” he huskily commands over a hip-shaking club rhythm.
Yasi Salek hosts the coolest rock podcast
This interview appeared in THE FACE’s weekly music newsletter. You can sign up here. When the news recently broke that the heroic Mancunian bassist Mani had passed away, of course the immediate protocol was to press play on The Stones Roses’ debut, followed by the Primal Scream albums which were blessed with his grooves. After that, it was time to dig deep into the lore of the aforementioned groups – and Bandsplain was the coolest way to do so.
Victory Lap’s documentary unites the UK’s DIY rap scene
On Sunday night, Victory Lap packed out East London’s Genesis Cinema for the premiere of Training Mode Volume.1 – an hour-long film that’s packed with raw freestyles filmed on the streets and in crammed studios across London. Training Mode Volume.1 is clearly inspired by the legendary Risky Roadz grime DVDs. It’s also proof that, right now, the scene is stylistically diverse and full of characters. The doc sees grime’s OG Novelist spit sturdy bars, while YT gargles his hooks with AutoTune.

George Riley – More is More (SHERELLE’s More is Jungle mix) There’s been a lot of club chat in the office lately. As the year winds down and the nights get colder, it seems we’re all yearning for a good sweatbox sesh before the festive season really kicks in and we’re stuck sipping mulled wine with our relatives. Perhaps, George Riley was thinking the same when she dropped the extended version of her cheerful club record More is More last week (titled, of course, More is More is More).

The Hellp – Modern Man For listeners old enough to remember the SEGA Megadrive and the Nintendo SNES, there’s a twinkling videogame sound on Modern Man which feels pleasurably nostalgic, triggering flashbacks of collecting coins as Super Mario, or Sonic the Hedgehog crashing into a cluster of golden rings. And if you appreciate Blink-182 as much as Chandler from The Hellp does, you’ll love the dopamine-driving pop-punk melody.

Robyn's comeback single Dopamine is an addictive rush of arena-ready…
Ken Carson – Margiela Right now, Ken and his Opium buddies are opening massive mosh pits across America on the much-hyped, long-delayed Antagonist 2.0 tour. And so, strategically speaking, now is probably a good time to drop new music. On Margiela, the Atlanta rapper is once again slurring his words about luxury fashion and debauched sex as if it’s just part of his daily routine. Set to kaleidoscopic synths and filtered through molasses-thick layers of AutoTune, it all sounds pleasingly strange.
A sneak peak at Deviation's new photo book
An 18th birthday warrants a proper celebration, especially if you’re a UK clubnight that’s still going strong. Deviation, founded by Benji B and Judah Afriyie in 2007, is celebrating 18 years in the game with a photobook, an exhibition and a party. After all these years, Deviation remains one of the most respected nights among the heads, so you can’t blame them for making a big fuss.
Rosalía makes a theatrical return with Berghain
Rosalía – Berghain Rosalía’s first single off her hotly-anticipated album, Lux is nothing short of epic. Accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, the Spanish artist takes on opera, merging German, Spanish and English in a devotional love song that borders on dangerous obsession. Singing in German, a choir emphasises in the chorus: “His fear is my fear/His anger is my anger/His love is my love/His blood is my blood,” before Rosalía joins them in a towering falsetto.
PinkPantheress and Oklou give Girl Like Me a trip-hop makeover
Bassvictim – 27a Pitfield St When you type ‘27a Pitfield St’ into Google Street View, you’re met with the relatively mundane image of a rental flat above a tattoo parlour and a chicken shop called Taste of Tennessee. But according to this pretty-but-gritty track from Bassvictim’s very good new album Forever, this East London location has seen plenty of action.
The Hellp step their game up with Doppler
The Hellp – Doppler “Our music has never even been that good. But it has something in it,” The Hellp’s Chandler Ransom Lucy told THE FACE last year.

FKA twigs makes the afters sound like a great idea on Cheap Hotel
RenzNiro, Dunamis, Grim, Wudini – Real Striker We’ve been fans of RenzNiro for some time now. The Manchester rapper has close ties with the North West’s experimental scene, where artists like Space Afrika and Rainy Miller emphasise the potency of his poetic bars with their distinctive styles of melancholic ambience. Renz has joined forces with fellow Mancunians Dunamis, Grim and Wudini for the harder-edged 10,000 Hours EP, fusing grime flows with sci-fi synths and glacial trap beats.
Bar Italia thrash it out on the indie-punk scorcher Rooster
Jawnino – LivFlare (broadway market) Jawnino specialises in druggy poetry and scuzzy sound palettes. On LivFlare, the shadowy MC rapidly spits over a chaotic onslaught of hi-hats courtesy of producers Laron and Tony Seltzer (who just dropped an enchanting collaborative album with fellow New Yorker Anysia Kim).
Fakemink and Suzy Sheer return to the indie disco with Braces
M. T. Hadley – Why Is It That Way? Six years on from his debut LP, Empty, M. T. Hadley is back with a deceptively euphoric-sounding single. Trawling through heartbreaking stories of a broken world, (“I can’t imagine how hard that must be /To be born somewhere but have to flee /Holding nothing but your memories”) Hadley simply asks, why does it have to be that way? accompanied by bright synths.

Frost Children – What is Forever For Frost Children are in their mid twenties, and therefore they would have been too young to have experienced what they call the “golden age” of EDM outside of their bedrooms. But with forthcoming album Sister, Angel and Lulu Proust are making up for lost time. Jacked-up anthem What is Forever For is built with epicly garish synths and vaguely profound lyrics, teasing us with the illusion that you can drown your sorrows with Red Bull cocktails. DR
Ethel Cain's Fuck Me Eyes is a poignant powerpop anthem
John Glacier – Fly With Me On her debut album Like a Ribbon, John Glacier and producer Kwes Darko perfected a sonic formula, emphasising the emotional potency of the Hackney rapper’s poetry with raw guitars and bittersweet synths. But when John hopped on an old JME beat earlier this year, it was a reminder that she can sound great on harder-edged production too.
EsDeeKid and Fimiguerro show Liverpool some love on 5am
PinkPantheress – Close to You PinkPantheress is having a great year. Her dancefloor-friendly mixtape, Fancy That, was met with critical acclaim, and it’s sounding even better now that summer’s in full swing. The former FACE cover star seems perfected the press grind with a laidback approach to interviews and every time she gets on the mic – whether during The Dare’s Lido set or at her eclectic Victory Lap session – it looks like a genuinely good time.
The Glastonbury line-up is pretty good, actually
Ki/Ki – The Temple – 1:30 — 2:30 Your brain will likely be completely depleted of serotonin by this point, but you should push through one last time for the techno-laden speedy bangers from Ki/Ki. The Dutch DJ/producer’s high-powered sets are consistently amongst some of the best I’ve seen on the festival circuit. Maybe keep your sunglasses on for this one. JW
